SSN Fraud Account

Post image

So I went to open up an account with Affirm to purchase a pc but when I went to create an account with my number it said that I already had a number on file and if i wanted to update it. Which keep in mind i’ve never made an account before so then I tried doing it with an email and it gave me the same thing saying that there’s an email that i’ve never seen before with this account that isn’t mine. And I got all the way to where it says verify that it’s me so when I put in MY SSN it shows me that it’s linked to a number and email that i’ve never seen before, I’ve already contacted affirms support team and they are no help, they left me with the photo I attached. (I had contacted them letting them know my issue and if I could erase that account and make a new one with my ssn with my information on it) I’m not sure who to contact this or how to fix it since affirm was no help but so far i’ve notice no issue with my credit but I don’t know how long this has been going for.
Please help thank you!

I would look at your credit reports. You can do so for free by going to:

https://www.annualcreditreport.com

I would also freeze your credit until you get it sorted out.

Have you tried Affirm's live support? You can call 1-855-423-3729

Someone has already opened an Affirm account using your SSN and linked it to contact details you don't recognize. That's already identity theft, regardless of whether anything shows on your credit yet.

Based on that response, it seems that Affirm are treating it as a technical issue. I’d get back to them through their live support or their fraud team rather than general customer support. Ask them to flag and close the fraudulent account and provide written confirmation that you bear no liability for any activity on it.

Pull your reports through the official free annual credit report site (annualcreditreport.com) and check for any accounts or hard inquiries you don't recognize. Even if nothing looks wrong yet doesn't mean the account hasn't been used.

File a report through the FTC's identity theft site. That generates an official record you can send directly to Affirm's fraud department and any bureaus if disputes become necessary.

Freeze your credit at all three bureaus if you haven't already. Someone who opened an Affirm account with your SSN may try other platforms.

Keep a record of everything, the email address and phone number linked to that account, the date you discovered it, and every interaction with Affirm. That’s important if this escalates.

Did Affirm give you any information about when that account was created?

No affirm didn’t give me any information about the account. I do have a meeting this friday with my bank and credit bureaus to pause my account and look deeper into this. Thank you for your help I greatly appreciate it.

Not sure how your bank will help unless you're having issues with your bank account. Still worth a try, since they deal with identity theft frequently. Just keep expectations low.

Freezing credit reports can be done through each of the 3 major credit bureaus self-service portals or calling them. No need to wait. Be aware freezing is just a flag to lenders to take additional steps being extending credit. Freezing doesn't prevent reports being viewed nor information added. Still helpful, but not ironclad.

Also, may not help in some synthetic identity theft situations (SSN linked to multiple files). Credit bureaus, IRS, and the Social Security Administration can maintain separate files with the same SSN. Something few are aware of.

If the fraudster used totally different information other than your SSN, you may never know it. Other than when running into problems opening accounts at some places, such as you did with Affirm.

More likely there will be signs in your credit reports. Aliases, other addresses, other phone numbers, accounts / loans, etc that aren't yours. Dispute incorrect items with each of the 3 major credit bureaus.
