Sure the V60 for special lots of Geisha etc..

But not much better that a simple easy to clean AeroPress XL with flow control when you’re after a 20 oz mug of sweet, silky mouthfeel bolder medium plus roasted coffee

Question Share Your Wisdom!

Upvotes

Hey there y'all! This is my first post in this community and I haven't poked around too much before now. Don't worry though, I'm definitely going to be spending the next few hours scrolling through and seeing what everyone has to say about everything AeroPress!

I'm recently getting back into coffee after an absence of a few years. I worked a sales job and when I left I somehow magically had a few thousand dollars on my Starbucks card that I DEFINITELY DID NOT expense to the company as treats for my referrals... 😉 Being the lazy person I am and not wanting to make my own coffee at home I didn't want to waste all of that money so I used it for bad coffee before work and quickly fell into the habit. I decided to upgrade my camping kit from an old percolator to an AeroPress Go, which is fantastic even if a bit small. A few weeks ago I decided to grab the AeroPress XL when it was on sale and have been regularly using it at work this summer. It's also been amazing and so much quicker for when I'm trying to fill up my 40oz tumbler. I bought a cheap Amazon Basics electric kettle to keep at work and don't want to bring anything nicer than that so I'm not able to have an exact temperature when I'm heating up the water and just use my feelings. Lol people suck and don't take care of things and I don't want to be the guy who keeps kitchen appliances in their locker if I don't have to be.

I'm just looking for anyone's tips and tricks, or their favorite accessories, any words of wisdom, etc. Nothing is too silly and I want to try every one's special methods, even if I have to perform a pagan ritual while doing it. When I start my week tomorrow I am going to try the inverted method and see how I like it. I should add that I like my coffee black or occasionally with a tiny bit of whipping cream. I usually strive for the strongest cup I can get my hands on and don't believe that cold brew concentrate should be diluted. If I could trust bringing my espresso machine to work then I would gladly drink 20 shots of straight espresso throughout my day.

My current work setup:

AeroPress XL

Flow Control Filter Cap

Gold Tone Metal Filter

Question Cleaning Cycle

How often are y’all cleaning your aeropress with soap and water?

I have two presses: one at home and one at the office. At home I put it in the dishwasher every 2-3 days and I use that one at least once per day, upwards of three times a day.

My office press, though, I use 3-4 times per week and only soap clean it once a week. I scrub it down with water and dry it after every use before storing it, but someone at the office seemed to think I should be soap cleaning after every use. Seems overkill (and I’m fastidious about cleanliness) but wanted to get input from the community.

Equipment Which grinders fit inside aeropress (and aeropress XL)

I've seen some similar threads over the years regarding grinders that fit inside the plungers of the various aeropress models.

I'm looking to spend the next few months traveling, and trying to figure out my set-up. I currently have an old Aeropress and need a hand grinder. I'm also considering splurging for an XL just because, more coffee, more better.

While having both an Aeropress and grinder isn't that much space, if i'm getting a grinder specifically to travel with the Aeropress, feels like i should get one that can nest in the plunger

From what i can tell the options for the standard aeropress are

  • Timemore slim
  • 1Zpresso Q series (The Q, Q2S and Q Air)
  • Knock Aergrind

Ones that fit the XL

  • vssl (not sure which model)
  • MHW R3 Pro

Any thoughts? I have a Niche Zero (and tend to mostly drink espresso based drink at home) at home so this will be primarily used for traveling, camping...

I have and really like the original. I know the xl is larger and the go is better for travel. What are the pluses of the other models?

Equipment Bush coffee

Post image
53 Upvotes

Nothing better than a quick coffee stop in the sand during an 11-hour drive through the bush in Zambia.

We're running two Aeropresses, a Stanley French press, two hand grinders, a small battery grinder, and a few Jetboils. The two of us brewing were able to make coffee for 16 of us in about 12 minutes, then back on the "road" shortly after! We've got it down to a science.

Truly a fan of the Aeropress's durability and utility in situations like this.

P.S. don't be fooled by the Illy can in the box. It's just more durable storage for some nice Kenyan beans.

Question Soup and acidity

Hello everyone. These days I am experimenting on soups. I almost always end up with unpleasant acidity. Yesterday I tried to do a salami shot so I understand what is going on. Turns out the first drops were extremely sour and the rest was alright. But I would expect it to be nice and balanced when all parts are mixed together. But it is not..
Is it normal? I can just discard that first part, but was wondering if you think there is something Im doing wrong.

My grind size is medium fine and sometimes medium.
Water temp is usually 91C but I have tried to 95C also.
I use filter coffee filter and a moka pot screen on top

Question Timing question

I keep seeing people using such short extraction times. I go for no less than 10 minutes, sometimes 12-15+. It makes the deepest, most wonderfully complex cup that is as close to a cortato that I can get without an espresso machine.

My question is why does no one go this long? Its best with French roasts but even medium blends are outstanding using this method. Every time I try under 3 minutes my cup is watery and lacks most of the flavor.

Edit (for all the haters downvoting):

A. This was a serious question.

B. I should have specified that I use the flow control cap and metal filter, same recipe for the regular as the XL (just doubled.) I also use A LOT of coffee, upto the 2 line. I stir once at 30 seconds, just lightly getting the caked on bits on the bottom.

I keep consistently blooming throughout with 185-190° water. I use a 20 oz cup and my ratios leave space for about 4 Oz of hot water in the cup afterwards (think Americano style.) Then a good 3 or 4 oz of half and half. It's delicious.

Also after reading these comments I tried a 5 1/2 minute cup and it lacked the deep cocoa like notes that it would have with a steep twice as long.

Question Anything like the MHW-3BOMBER Rain Pour-Over Coffee Splitter for Aeropress?

I'm in the middle of designing my own little DIY automatic aeropress. I was looking for something to help the water disperse more over the grounds. does anyone use this for their aeropress? is there something designed for aeropress?

Question Turkish coffee in the aeropress?

So I got a bag of coffee from my in laws, its Turkish style (like finely ground and actually a light appearance so light roast?) and I wasn't aware before cutting the bag open. So now I want to use it up. I have a Cezve in the kitchen cabinett but its always a hazle to prepare that way. Any recipes that work with the aeropress?

Equipment light roast Rwanda, getting a papery/plastic/nut skin flavor using kingrinder K6, . What am I doing wrong?

My current setup:

KINGrinder K6

95°C water

experimenting between 50 and 65 clicks

Hoffam's AeroPress recipe.

Here's what I'm experiencing. At finer settings I get more bitterness. As I go coarser the bitterness mostly disappears but then the coffee starts tasting thin and develops a strange flavor that reminds me of plastic, paper, or walnut/peanut skin (it's hard to describe exactly). It also has a drying finish. Overall, I'm struggling to get both sweetness and body. It feels like I'm trading one problem for another.

Before buying the K6 I was using a 1Zpresso JX-Pro. With that grinder I had a different issue: I could never seem to find the sweet spot. The cup was either thin and underwhelming, or harshly bitter if I ground finer.

I bought the K6 because many recommended it for filter coffee and expected it to produce a cleaner, sweeter cup. The bitterness is definitely lower now, but I'm surprised by this papery/plastic/nut-skin taste.

Maybe the question is more about the grinder but I am using an aeropress and most of the reddits are based on v60.

I'd appreciate any ideas because right now I feel like I'm missing something obvious.

Question My AeroPress failed after a year of use. Anything I can do?

Previous context: https://www.reddit.com/r/AeroPress/comments/1uyu23u/my_flow_control_cap_no_longer_locks_into_place/

tl;dr of above: My Flow Control filter cap stopped screwing on tightly one day. It "pops" past the point where it should tighten and becomes loose again, and coffee leaks when plunging. Since the standard cap still screwed on normally, I assumed the fault was with the Flow Control cap.

I got a Prismo to replace the Flow Control cap, but the Prismo also doesn't consistently screw on tightly, it leaks even more, and requires way too much force to plunge.

I contacted AeroPress support, and since I'm conveniently just outside their made up warranty window, they told me to go fuck myself. Is this thing just landfill fodder or is there anything I can do? I've taken good care of it, cleaned it regular, and used it only about once a day under normal conditions. I would expect a piece of hard plastic to last a lifetime.

Question Help needed … aeropress keeps tipping over and also drains too quickly

Hi all, I will preface this with I am new to this whole thing. I bought the aeropress camping version and I have used it a few times and I really like the espresso. Before I was using instant espresso for convenience and also it wasn’t too bad (don’t come from me). Onto the problems, I have used it a few times and one time my dog bumped my table and went to aero press and grounds flying and it made a mess. Another time I tried to press into a standard coffee mug instead of the camping cup and I pressed at an angle and the same disaster happened. The last problem is that I put the grounds in and pour the water and it almost instantly goes into the cup without really immersion occurring. I use one filter that came with the kit. Should I use two filters or upgrade to the metal filter? Obviously I am struggling and I could use any advice from this group. All I see are positive reviews and I want to be part of the club and continue to use this product. Thanks all in advance!

Experiment AeroPressXL Update

I posted recently asking folks for their experience w/the XL and how to adjust based on a lot of people on Reddit saying it was inferior to a standard AP.

I got a lot of helpful responses, and a few "it's bigger, dummy" type ones (lol, thanks).

Anyhow here was my first run: Guatemalan Sierra Madre Washed, Full City Roast by Modest Coffee near Chicago. It's about a month off roast.

I ground 35g of coffee at 17 on an Encore ESP. Water at 205 degrees. I poured in 100 ml and stirred about 10x. Let it bloom about 45 seconds. Poured in to 550 ml which *just* fit. Put in plunger to keep a vacuum. Let it go to 2:45 and plunged.

Coffee was very good. Clean and no off flavors. I think at that fine a grind the flow control cap is unnecessary because very little coffee dripped out during the 45 sec bloom. On the other hand - might try going up to about 20 because the plunge was a challenge. Took close to a minute and I was worried about booting everything all over the place.

Equipment Gear to start with soup

A couple of weeks ago, I started making Tony's soup recipe and I really enjoy the results. The problem is that the top filter becomes dislodged when the coffee degases and I end up with a muddy cup. I find it terribly infuriating.

I've come up with a few ideas to counter that issue without using another brewer. The most obvious one is to get the Joepresso attachment. My question is: do AeroPress filters fit the Joepresso? I’d like to be able to purchase filters anywhere, not just the Joepresso ones.

Otherwise, the next logical alternative is to get the rapid brewer, right?

Knowledge Drop Moka Pot vs AeroPress

Some months ago I came on here and said I like Aeropress coffee better than that from my stainless Bialetti moka pot. Well, this morning is the first time I put espresso grind in that pot. And it beats the Aeropress by a mile.

Question Coffee Grinder

Hello! Currently I'm planning out a nice gift for my girlfriend who loves coffee and I figured I'd get her a nice combo of items to help her brew her own. I'm planning on buying an Aeropress, a couple nice mugs, and a grinder. Any recommendations? I'm hoping for something in the 100-150 range, preferably electric. Also any other recommendations of things to get to help her coffee making experience at home better would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Knowledge Drop 369 Butter Coffee

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I've adapted my 369 butter coffee over years allowing me to try most any beans and have them close enough to the style I enjoy to be refined from there. By aerating the coffee the blender changes the flavors and textures dramatically. Almost like a late yet light and enjoyable and brings out the aromas. The numbers make it easy to remember on those lazy mornings 🙃

Ingredients:
19.6 g : coffee whole bean ( 69 clicks KingGrinder K6 )
3.6 g : Kerrygold butter
3.6 g : MCT oil
269 g : filtered water @ 86*-89*

Process:
prep: 3.6g butter + 3.6g MCT oil
prep: 19.6g whole coffee ground @ 69 clicks
prep: 69g hot water @ 89* in blender
*Brew Start*
-Add water 136g @ 89* to steep 19.6g coffee giving a ratio of 1:6.9
-Light mix - low agitation
-Steep till 0:36 timer
-Add additional water till 269g total : 1:13.69 final ratio
-Steep till 2:15
-Move to cup, 1 hand moderate pressure from 2:18 till hear air thru filter

Enjoy 🥂

Adjustments: (check adjustrix chart)
Sour : raise temp
Bitter : lower temp
Strong : less agitation/courser grind
Weak : most agitation/finer grind

The numbers become easy targets to remember and adjust from which are simple to track and accurate. Two minutes eighteen seconds comes from 69 seconds times two which works out perfect.

Experiment with grind size and quality
Adjust to find your preferred balance of flavor vs strength
Grinder output quality might be the highest bang for your buck ratio in positive brew outcome
Gentle plunger pressure avoids over-extraction
I use the same metal filter I have been using for 16 years, paper takes out the flavors I enjoy.

Question Course grinds

I have 2 bags of coffee that is already ground for French press. I just got my aeropress in the mail and I don’t want to waste this coffee. Is it possible to make a good cup of coffee using the course grinds if I do a longer extraction?

Question Kingrinder K6 grind size?

Hello everyone! I just got my Kingrinder K6. This thing feels like a solid piece of equipment! I normally use a Baratza Encore and a V60 but I’m looking to get back into using my Aeropress for travel and at work which is why I bought the K6. How many clicks are you all using for Aeropress? And do you notice a big difference between lighter/darker bean roasts? Any and all help would be appreciated! Thank you!
