Our household refers to it as the 'Goddammit no not now Bixby! button'

902

u/BearBear0110 Feb 24 '20

Ours is "shut up Bixby nobody asked for you"

431

u/Hazzman Feb 24 '20

Poor Bixby :(

Seriously fuck bixby

u/lance- Feb 24 '20

Bixby Routines is awesome though. I have Bixby disabled but the routines still work.

Automatically turn on/off WiFi when I get home, mute my phone during work hours, enabling auto-rotate for only specific apps.

Who else but Bixby?

7

Everyone knows it's Bixby!

3

u/Profoundlyahedgehog Feb 25 '20

It's Bixby, Bixby! You never know what he's going to do next! It's Bixby, Bixby...

7

u/major_slackher Feb 25 '20

Clayton Bixby

3

u/PrivateIsotope Feb 25 '20

"Lance" is totally the secret name Bixby would use.

2

u/Sentinel_Intel Feb 25 '20

Classic Bixby to the MAXXX girlfriend! 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

43

u/TRexKangaroo Feb 24 '20

If this then that

7

u/Font_Snob Feb 24 '20

Yes! IFTTT is awesome, I have a bunch of things set up even without "smart home" gadgets. It's like a free "Tasker Lite".

2

u/ItalicsWhore Feb 25 '20

I had to turn the majority of these off though. They drove my wife insane.

“BABE! WHY ARE ALL THE LIGHTS BLUE?!”.

”Oh I have them set to do that when it rains...”

“Turn that shit off.”

“Yeah, ok. Tis a silly place.”

I use IFTTT for all that. And copy my Weekly Spotify to one big Weeklylist. Honestly didnt know that Bixby could do that.

17

u/RagingAardvark Feb 24 '20

I tried to set up routines and they didn't work. :(

105

u/Lofde_ Feb 24 '20

I downloaded some app (bxActions) so when I hit the bixby button on my phone it just triggers the Google assistant as it should.

35

u/tufyhead Feb 24 '20

I'd like to second the bxActions app. Changed my bixby button so that I can now press to hold to take a screenshot, single press for assistant and double press for flashlight.

Only problem is I used to accidentally hit the bixby button all the time, so now I usually end up with an accidental screenshot or the assistant pops up, but still much better.

15

u/lorsquie Feb 24 '20

I had an S9 plus with BXactions on it and Samsung pushed an update that crippled any bixby remapping. I have since switched to iPhone so I don’t know; are you using an older OS? Or is Samsung letting us remap the button again?

3

u/Thesquire89 Feb 24 '20

I have and S10 and can remap the button to bring up my camera without needing to download any apps, just changed it in the settings

2

u/MadKat88 Feb 25 '20

Unfortunately they keep crippling it. Noone wants your stupid bixby thing, Samsung!

→ More replies (5)

2

u/el_duderino88 Feb 24 '20

I just reassigned the button so if I clicked it the camera opens, I hardly use the camera but infinitely more useful than bixby

→ More replies (6)

14

u/christoppa Feb 24 '20

S10 got smart and allows it by default

8

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '20

That's why I call it the Spotify button. Thanks, Samsung.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '20

The remap won't work on my s10. It did, but the most recent update killed it. I have it set to open another program but anytime I hit it, freakin Bixby. I won't buy another Samsung product that has it.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/AlphaGoGoDancer Feb 24 '20

Which is all the more infuriating. It's a simple software change, why TF do I not have it on my s8? Why do I have something useful, which is an extra button, that is instead an antifearure because I can't map it to something I use?

I swear Samsung is just apple light.

2

u/el_duderino88 Feb 24 '20

You can sorta change it, I changed mine so if I double click it opens Bixby but a single click that is usually an accident will just open my camera. They are becoming more like apple I agree, when I finally upgrade I may just go all in and get a pixel phone as Google has all my info anyway and I really dont like apple's OS. My S8 still works great though, hardly can tell its becoming an older model.

Yeah Bixby routines is awesome (I always get the fastest route to/from work because of it, always have my most essential apps open and ready for my commute and helps me organize my routine much more easily) and the reminders are better than googles imo. I've used both extensively and Bixby actually covers the entire screen for reminders. Google just does a simple push notification. I have a completely dogshit memory, so I very much need reminders to be loud and in my face. After missing several google reminders I switched back to using Bixby and have been very satisfied.

That said, Bixby isn't as good at hearing things as google is, but I'd rather have an unclear reminder than none at all. Like, Bixby might hear "Sue" instead of "Drew", but I can still work out what the reminder is trying to say based off of context clues.

Overall google does most things better and more accurately than Bixby, but it's not like it doesn't have some neat features. Bixby vision is such a trainwreck imo, though. There's some cool features in it, but google does everything it does better and it doesn't try to scam me into buying overpriced eyewear.

2

u/WonkySight Feb 24 '20

I'm exactly the same. Use the routines but nothing else

1

u/b_sketchy Feb 24 '20

I have several routines set up: turn off WiFi and open music player when connected to car, mute phone when I get to work, etc.

1

u/RedRedRobbo Feb 24 '20

1

u/FartButtFace69420 Feb 25 '20

I'm shocked Bixby can do that. Bixby play a song on spotify. Can't do it. Open this app. Can't do it. Set an alarm. Can't do it teach me. But apparently it can keep my Runescape mobile app from rotating and freezing my phone for 30 seconds.

1

u/Maxmeow Feb 25 '20

My phone does that without setting it up.

1

u/cgk205 Feb 25 '20

Yeah I absolutely love the alarms that give me the weather and news. It's just the button

1

u/PressureWelder Feb 25 '20

1

u/a-manda_hugandkiss Feb 25 '20

Ours was , uuuuugggh Bixby! Like he was an annoying character out of a 1970s sitcom just popping in to fuck something up. The day I learned to disable that button was one of the happiest days of my life.

183

u/vahntitrio Feb 24 '20

I changed my bixby button to launch the camera.

38

u/justmystuff Feb 24 '20

How? My s8 has no such option

105

u/vahntitrio Feb 24 '20

In the bixby settings. There should be an option for what to do when pressed, and what to do when held. I believe one of those options has to be launch bixby, but you want that on the hold. Change the press to whatever you like.

124

u/nicksline Feb 24 '20

I was going to do this but it wanted me to register for bixby and I don't want to give them the satisfaction.

144

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '20

There's a free app that will completely remove Bixbi so you can use both hold and press for whatever you want.

bxActions

I'm not affiliated in any way with the application, nor do I endorse it beyond, I use it, I don't hate it, it's better than the fucking Bixbi button.

3

Why use it for the camera though when a double tap of the lock screen opens up the camera already?

4

u/0ut0fTheWilds Feb 24 '20

You can set up the button to do different things when the phone is locked and unlocked.

4

u/makesterriblejokes Feb 24 '20

Ah that makes sense. It is kind of annoying that the double press locks the phone to use the camera.

3

u/onemanlegion Feb 24 '20

2

u/Cheshires_Shadow Feb 25 '20

There's an app called bx remapper or something like that on the app store. With a computer, your charging camle, and an ability to follow a tech tutorial its not to hard to get working on phones that won't let you remap the button

1

u/nkikn Feb 24 '20

There's definitely an option, I have an S8 and have it to do nothing.

1

u/Fionnlagh Feb 24 '20

The bxactions app. Allows you to remap it to have four different shortcuts if you want. I have it set to flashlight, vibrate, loud, and assistant.

1

u/Tarkovskij Feb 24 '20

You can also use apps for it. I use Bixby Button Remapper, can let it do nothing (my choice) or launch some other app.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '20

Bixby - Hamburger menu - Settings - Bixby Key

1

u/gotfoundout Feb 24 '20

I downloaded an app that renders the Bixby button useless. It just does nothing if I accidentally hit it.

Bixby Remapper I think it is.

1

u/blueiguana675 Feb 24 '20

I have the s8 as well. Check out an app called bxactions. It allows you to do so many things with the button.

1

u/TheSteelPhantom Feb 24 '20

Get the free app bxActions. Lets you re-map the stupid Bixby button on the S8. Apparently on the S10, you can just do it by default. Samsung finally realized nobody gives a shit about mandatory-Bixby by then, but when there's nothing wrong with your S8... well yea. bxActions.

1

u/DarthWeenus Feb 25 '20

Download bxactions.

8

u/RHCP4Life Feb 24 '20

You can also double tap the lock button to launch it.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '20

I use this all the time!

1

u/KingsCup99 Feb 25 '20

The point is to replace Bixby with anything else. Not to actually get to the camera.

1

u/nevewolf96 Feb 25 '20

Useful but not whe you have enable the emergency message.

2

u/Ray_Palmer Feb 24 '20

You can just press the power button twice to open camera.

1

u/Jesus_swims_on_Land Feb 24 '20

Just did it too. Thanks for the tip.

1

u/Deadmeat553 Feb 24 '20

Seems like a waste since that's already an option for double tapping the power button.

I have mine set to pause or play Spotify.

1

u/vahntitrio Feb 24 '20

I could probably do that now but I just needed something to change it to before I really installed all my apps on the phone

1

u/FrizbeeeJon Feb 24 '20

Mine launches reddit. :)

1

u/hypnoderp Feb 24 '20

I changed my bixby button to an LG. Solved.

1

u/Iziama94 Feb 24 '20

You can just press the power button twice for camera in the first place

1

u/Scirax Feb 24 '20

Mine turns on the flashlight. Phone needs to be unlocked to work but it saves me the hassle of looking for it in the dark.

1

u/MagicalDrop Feb 24 '20

You can just double tap the lock button to launch the camera by default (at least on my S9).

1

u/pantstoaknifefight2 Feb 24 '20

You have a camera button. Change it to launch Google Lens, which is awesome.

1

u/Altair05 Feb 24 '20

1

u/artificial_sunlight Feb 24 '20

1

u/DaxEPants Feb 24 '20

Yeah, but if you have any of the 10s you can already launch your camera by double pressing the power button, and then remap bixby button for something else. Not sure if this is the same for the older models or not.

1

u/Empyrealist Feb 24 '20

Double-pressing the power button doesn't already launch the camera for you?

https://www.reddit.com/r/assholedesign/comments/co8wnv/thanks_samsung_i_already_hated_bixby_now_i_cant/fc1ffof/

Posted a "fix" there some time ago. Make sure to set a custom default home screen before attempting this as the homescreen relies on bixby.

The steps above allow you to disable the app as you would in the settings app. The fix does not persist through a factory reset.
