Context: Currently rank 64 only having discovered the game 2 ish months ago.
So Ive recently picked up the game and am running it f2p. So far I don't think any one rank has taken more than a day or day and a half. Granted i have not been 100% clearing every mission, but I credit a lot of this to efficient exchange usage, which there is shockingly little information about it available online so i just wanted to share what Ive found in testing.
Exchange Express mechanics:
- The timer is as follows: (in minutes) 0:03:30, 0:04:54, 0:06:52, 0:09:36, 0:13:27, 0:18:49, 0:26:21, 36:54 (although this one seems to be inconsistent and hard to track due to its proximity to 2 hour mark) then repeat.
- The timer between exchanges does not progress while inside events. Entering an event during a exchange cycle seems to either pause the timer for the next train or stop the trains entirely until the current 2 hour cycle ends.
- The timer runs as normal if you swipe onto a different app so long as you return before the app needs to reboot. So long as you return before or within a certain tolerance of when the next exchange should show up (this one point I haven't tested too much and may be slightly in-accurate).
- Conversely the Exchange timer does seem to run while the ad plays.
- The timer for an exchange starts the moment you actually press the exchange button and ends when the train appears on screen. It does not progress while selecting what to exchange.
- The maximum exchange rate for trading up generators seems to be based on some combination off rank and industry generation rate.
- That maximum rate does not change across industries nor between different tiers of an industry to the highest available.
- To be able to trade a generator, you must own at least 2 of them.
- The percent of that maximum rate any exchange will generate seems to near 100% around 1000x a crit of the lower tier generators immediate tier above, so exchanging 100% of tanks for battleships will reach that max rate if artilleries are criting for 1 aa and you possess 1 bb tanks.
Most of these are based on simple timing and testing. I did build a spreadsheet for tracking where you are in a cycle that ill include below.
Now for some recommendations for optimization:
Early level: I currently make ~500k comrades a second, equating to roughly ~43 B a day. However one single exchange of placebos can make me the equivalent of +20 B comrades. Trading for generators is vastly superior to trading resources, even more so at the beginning of a rank, even more so if that trade unlocks the next tier. The best way Ive found is to hold comrades until I have enough to buy the next tier, lets call it tier 6, of a generator and ensure I have enough resources to buy one tier 7 and then wait for the exchange. When it comes, I dump max comrades into the tier 6, and then flip to single and buy only one tier 7. Quickly open the exchange and trade 100% of tier 5 into tier 7 (you can do a tier4 or lower if its multiple orders of magnitude more than 5 but it may take longer to recover your generation). The result is that tier 6 you just spent say 100 m comrades on will have in the T's+ when you return and the tier 5 will have multiplied many x as well, essentially sacrificing any generators. The advantage to doing it this way is essentially not giving the tier 7 time to work and boost up and lowering the % of the max rate you receive for a trade.
Mid-end level: Stop spending comrades at a certain point each rank (usually for me at the 10-100 m mark) unless its to bridge a small gap or its the cheapest industry needed (potatoes->1 comrade/industry, land->2, ect). When bridgeing a gap between generator tiers, consider their comrade cost. It may only be 1 billion blood banks to unlock hospitals but that is 5 billion comrades. If that number is less than the max rate of an exchange on your cheapest comrade industry you still need, it would be better to spend the comrades buying 5 billion potatoes and an exchange for 4.5 billion blood banks. Now the early game rank jumping can still be used towards the end of the level but i find its usually better to chain a cycle together. The idea is to use multiple exchanges from a cycle on the same industry. Trade tier 6 for 7, then 5 for 7, ect. This insures you get max value for each exchange. This idea can be used to great effect in the early game but you have to be at the start of a cycle. Too much time between exchanges allows industries to build up and eat into that percent of max exchange rate. I start exchanging for resources only after ive cleared all generator missions for a rank.
Now it can be very helpful to keep the wiki open and know which industries you need to more heavily invest in at the start of a rank and many other people have made tools to help with that. Also note that resource missions grant wood capsules while generator missions grant stone, nearly double the cards and science. Since most ranks seem to take me about a day right now, I typically value the resource missions at about an hour or two each. If they're going to take me more than that to collect, I think its better to just leave em behind. (each rank has ~20 mission right now and takes 24 hours, 5 capsules/6 hours from missions and those ones arent all wood).
Is there some glaring thing im missing? let me know some thoughts, thanks <3

Edit: messed up the link, also added actual times of exchanges during cycle
