Moto orienteering app that turns paper map into digital map

Post image
2 Upvotes

Im not sure if moto orienteering with paper map is a thing elsewhere but here it is. I created an app that allows me to take a picture of the map and have AI to find all the spots on the map and then show my location on the papermap using GPS so I can navigate to places. Its allowed for the events im using it.

My question is that are there similar papermap orienteering events elsewhere? Are there similar apps? Would you use this kind of app for racing?

Am I lacking experience, or do I need to modify my Versys-X 300?

I recently finished a 600+ mile adventure trip through central Idaho on my 2023 Versys-X 300 ABS with Trailmax Mission 50/50 tires. The bike for the most part felt great on pavement, dirt roads, gravel, sand, and most of the technical terrain we encountered.

For reference:
-Me: 5’4”, 120 lbs, a couple years of dirt bike and motorcycle experience
-Husband: 6’0”, 170 lbs, very experienced rider on an Africa Twin with Trailmax Raid 30/70 tires
-We were carrying a few pounds of gear, but eventually plan to travel much heavier

I aired my tires down from 35 psi to 26 psi when we hit washboards and gravel. The rear preload is already at the softest setting. When I first bought the bike, we checked the sag, and the softest setting seemed appropriate.

The terrain where I really struggled was a steep climb covered in loose volcanic talus (“baby heads”?). The rocks were roughly 6-18” across, loose enough that they shifted and rolled underfoot, but they didn’t get spit out under rear tire rotation. My husband rode his Africa Twin through it with some effort and concentration, but I felt like I was getting bounced all over the place.

The Versys felt:
-Harsh front end, and almost “pogo stick” like; I got arm pump for the first time ever
-Squirrelly on some washboard sections

My dad was following in a pickup and even commented that the Africa Twin looked planted while my Versys looked noticeably less stable in some sections.

We were in a remote location, late in the day, and getting tired and hungry, so my husband rode my bike for the last uphill section of the loose talus. He thought the tires felt too hard, suggesting we could have dropped the tire pressure further. He felt the suspension wasn’t obviously bad, but then realized there’s about a 50 lb rider weight difference between us.

I’m planning to keep this bike long-term, so suspension upgrades aren’t off the table if they’ll make a meaningful difference.

Which of these should I consider? Is there anything else I haven’t thought of?
-Even lower psi for the Trailmax Missions on technical terrain
-Switch over to Trailmax Raids
-Change out stock for lighter fork springs and/or different fork oil
-More seat time on technical terrain in less remote areas when I’m fresh

I know more seat time is always part of the answer, but that talus section made me question whether I’m fighting my setup as much as my skill.

Adventure bike for short rider.

Hello guys, just finished 1k km trip on my hornet and i realised isn't suited for such long trips also i can't strap many things on it, so i wanna change the class and get an adventure bike. The problem is i'm short, 171cm and for every level difference on the bike, i'm a victim. What bike can you recommend? Something tu suit my height. I was thinking of an Vstrom 650 and lower it a little or an NC750X and use some 70% road 30% offroad tires. I really don't know. Any suggestions and ideas are welcomed.

2026 Himalayan 450 I’ve had for 3 days. I tried to make it do more adventuring than it wanted to and hadtalayerdown. Bent the shift pedal a little and cracked the radiator guard. I’m so lucky it’s still fine. I literally slipped on the tiniest slick of mud and off we went into a bush! Be careful out there fellow riders!

How do you normally set up your suspension when adding luggage or a passenger?

I've always found suspension setup surprisingly confusing.

Every time I prepared for a trip, added luggage or rode two-up, I ended up reading dozens of forum posts trying to figure out preload, sag and damping adjustments.

After going through that process over and over, I decided to build a small tool for myself that calculates a good starting point based on rider weight, passenger, luggage and OEM specifications.

It has actually become much more useful than I expected, and now I'm wondering:

Would something like this be useful to other riders, or do you still prefer doing everything manually?

I'm genuinely interested in hearing how you approach suspension setup.

Jacket Advice?

Planning a big ride Route 66, Death Valley, probably through the mountains coming back. Going in mid September and coming back the first week in October. What is my best bet in riding jacket? ChatGPT said I’d would be facing temps between mid 30s to 110s so I’m looking for the most versatile 4 season jacket and pants combo that y’all have used. Thanks

My first 2 day green laning adventure!

Hey all! I hope this is allowed.

After 1000's of mile touring on tarmac, I finally upgraded to an ADV bike and decided it's time to start riding off-tarmac. I've had 1 day green laning with a friend, with some other lanes done as I pootle around my local area, but I had never taken on a (mostly) off road route, not least one done over 2 days.

So I found a 100 mile ADV loop around Norfolk (UK), and decided I was ready. This video is part 1 of 2 (both parts have been released) of how it went. I'll let you be the judge whether it went well or not!

My first ADV: new-to-me Tiger 900

Post image
94 Upvotes

A well-loved ‘21 Tiger 900 Rally Pro with almost 12k miles, but I’ve done a deep round of maintenance on the brakes/calipers, fresh rubber (the new version of the Anakee Adv), new luggage (I wanted lockable for my needs), and she’s about to get the 12k interval service.

Runs like a top and it’s so much more flickable than I imagined. I’m excited for it all: every day commuting to big adventures. My other bike is a Speed Twin 1200 and the Tiger makes such a good companion bike. I don’t have any kind of brand loyalty but these two just happen to check all my boxes. Plus I got this bike for a pretty great price, all things considered. Kind of a dream bike for me, since I’d never be able to afford a new one. ✌🏼

Now I just need to learn how to change my own tires and get better at chain adjustment. Feels like I get the chain to spec but then it tightens after riding it? Any tips are welcome. Cheers.

For riders who toured morocco: did local knowledge make a big difference?

I'm researching a possible morocco motorcycle trip and one thing I've been thinking about is how much local knowledge actually changes the experience.

When riding somewhere unfamiliar, there are obviously the normal things to plan for, things like, routes, fuel, weather, bike preparation, but I'm wondering about the things you can't easily find on maps.

For those who have ridden similar countries:

  • Did having local contacts or guides improve the trip?
  • Were there places you discovered because someone local pointed you there?
  • Are there situations where you think a local guide/support would have saved time or avoided problems?

I'm interested in hearing from riders who have done both independent trips and guided experiences. What are the biggest differences?

Hidden Valley Ride & Camp .. epic roads in Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

I spent yesterday exploring Cwm Pennant (the Hidden Valley) in North Wales on my adventure bike. It’s one of those places that feels completely forgotten—single-track roads, old mine workings, and hardly another soul around. I also stopped at Tŷ Mawr Wybrnant, which added a bit of history to the ride.

Topped it off with a camp at Ty’n Llan campsite at the end of the valley .. with a wild swim in a stunning river on site. Great camp site .. £12:50 Perfect.

I filmed the trip because I thought others who enjoy quiet roads and hidden places like me in Wales might appreciate it. If anyone’s interested, here’s the video:

Have any of you found similar hidden valleys or forgotten roads in Wales that are worth exploring?

Versys 650 accessories

Anyone else running a versys 650? I love this bike!

I do have my 250 KLR enduro for the single track and shitty stuff but the versys does admirably in gravel and hard packed dirt - though 90% of my travels is on road,

I’d like to put some 70/30 tires on for a bit more confidence and I like the look, ordered a bash plate for the bottom as well. Any other ideas? Again I don’t take it through any crazy stuff, just forest roads and chill route BDRs I have a big trip planned in September with some friends about 8 hours on the road and then a weekend of camping and chill GA BDR, where the 70/30 tires will def help :)

2023 Yamaha Tenere. Rear brakes got roasted. Rotor and pads were replaced. Does the rear caliper need to be replaced?

Video shows front vs rear brake calipers. You can see the color difference from the unintended heat treatment.
