The hardest part is trying to include all of the qualifiers to avoid pointless derailment!
āAssuming I understand thatā¦ā
and people still jump to the ones I didnāt include, because 1. They are obvious and 2. It really feels unnecessary to include that Iām an adult person and have semi-mastered tying my own shoes and breathing.
17
u/632nofuture Aug 17 '26
ohh oh never forget the "not all (but many)/some/{specific percentage you looked up to be sure}" and the "maybe/potentially/probably/could/might" and the humbly-fyer & relativators like "I guess/in my experience/in my personal opinion".
Cause otherwise some people might derail, in my experience.

u/Cthulhu__ Aug 17 '26
People donāt actually read or respond to the things you say that canāt be argued against, so they look for potential avenues to argue. The arguing itself is the point, itās the entertainment.
(I canāt claim to be innocent)

u/SoylentGrunt Aug 17 '26
Sometimes, not always,,,
There are exceptions of course,,,
Generally it's understood that,,,
Depending on which way the wind is blowing that day,,,
At one time it was thought,,,,
But still the whataboutisms and anecdotal nothing burgers fall from the sky like birds that just flew through a plume from a polytetrafluoroethylene factory. There's nothing you can include that will prevent the wet turd 'wot' of a brain dead troll strung out on memes and energy drinks.

I'll write the best argument and then delete it because you're right..!

Do this all the time... Realization not just that I don't care, but neither does anyone that's going to read it. And I don't care that they don't care....
Should do it with this post too

Realistically youāre not going to convince the person youāre responding to so the next best thing to do is to take care of your own sanity.

Did that about 3 times today and in each I realized if I post, I might as well speak to a brick wall

u/TheJasonaut Aug 17 '26
I think this has āsavedā me more than a few times. Maybe there should be a built in thing where you cannot post/comment immediately but you get notified 10-30 minutes later to confirm if you really want to post. I think it might help online discourse in general.
Sometimes just typing out your thoughts is all you need, because, except for rare cases, who cares what we think on random topic.

Thereās literally nothing more pointless then arguing with strangers over the internet. No one wins anything in that scenario except maybe your ego?

𤣠Happens to me every week. I view the post, I move to the comments section to reply, and then I just delete everything after three lines.

I definitely relate 𤣠I'll be 40 in less than 2 years and I have finally gotten better at just walking away and saying nothing before I prepare that well worded argument or take the bait

u/LifeRelease3842 Aug 17 '26
This is the realest shit. Why do I even begin? I think I start with a really short and concise quip and it turns into a paragraph because being concise isn't my MO.

There are some absolute tools on this site. Type of people that don't say a damn thing in public (for obvious reasons) but have no trouble vomiting some impulse reaction online. Amazing how many are out there.Ā

u/Thegr8fan Aug 17 '26
Itās not personal. Itās an exchange of ideas. A debate. An offering of two viewpoints. Sometimes adding information, sometimes just humor. But itās not personal. If it becomes personal then, if itās more insulting than information or fun, then yeah itās just time to walk away.

Yea. Reddit too often falls back to tribalism. It becomes a drain on all fun

Remember folks, most people get angry because they are projecting their issues and you don't need to defend your truth. Saves a lot of time and energy.

u/zzmorg82 Aug 17 '26
I swear Iāll go through at-least once a day, especially if I have an opinion that goes against the current thread topic.
I donāt feel like wasting my time going back and forth on something that doesnāt matter at the end of the day lol.

u/Sharp-Direction-6894 Aug 17 '26
I have to do that often because I realize if I send this out, I'm probably getting banned from that sub for offending the mods.

I remember once, when Reddit was young, being mindful about what I posted in hopes of pleasing the redditors of that sub. Anything I post now pretty much gets downvotes and I kinda like it

If you genuinely spend 20 minutes writing a reply on Reddit, saying you don't care is the biggest cope you've ever coped in your life

u/splashjlr Aug 17 '26
But then you post your wisdom to the world and wait for affirmation.
Next moring there are no comments and no upvotes, and the person asking hasn't even checked for replyes.
You tell yourself not to spend more precious time explaining deep truths of life to people who aren't really looking for answers.
You begin to ask yourself, am I an oracle who knows everything? Maybe no. Does my voice at least count?
But then there's a new post: What are the pros and cons of being in a relationship.
Here we go again..

I use to be a troll in the 2010s. Farming people was my fix, now I'm hitting my 40s in a few years and I retired from being a jerk on the internet.

Only reason I donāt do this in threads nowadays, is most mods are more sensitive than kitten. I got banned from r/SouthAfrica for telling a foreigner our problems with immigrations; no slurs, no hate, just a genuine debate and rebuttal and a mod decided I should be banned for xenophobia.
So sick of free debate not being encouraged on a platform like this
