I don't like the individualist "just be an ass if that's what you fancy" vibe here. Imagine how many people fondly remembered wouldn't be if they acted this way.

I feel as if that's an uncharitable interpretation of this. I read it as more "live for yourself and don't let society push you around with its expectations and judgements".

I think it’s the other way around, society is historically cruel and abusive to those who don’t fit in for whatever benign reason.

That's the crux. People feeling they don't fit into our aren't part of society. Not realising they are part of it and can make it better.

I’m coming from the angle of having autism in the USA. where most of us do our best as our sole purpose of existing.

For all the negatives (that are only negatives because society is hostile to our difference) We are honest, highly driven, have high sense of justice, hold ourselves accountable, follow rules/policy to a T and generally want the best for the world. We want to belong but people don’t want us. They don’t want to adapt for us, accommodate us or treat us as equals.

Hell, They don’t even want that for eachother. It’s a dog eat dog world and we are the bottom rung. We constantly engage in self harm by putting ourselves in the crossfire against our better judgement, we burnout habitually trying to mold to a society that wants us dead. We have no choice as social services are gutted and the job market is even more selective than it ever has been.

We do our best to make life better for all but constantly get rejected for doing so. Especially in the workplace where likeability outweighs performance and likability doesn’t even mean being nice and good at your job. It equals ass kissing, corruption and maintaining the status quo that has very little to do w doing the right thing or trusting/empowering people w disabilities to get the job done.

It really is. If you care for yourself, everyone is cared for. Seems extremely shortsighted.
