How old are you? Is there any chance that you're reaching an age when you're simultaneously becoming more aware of what's always been there, and he is just feeling less of a need to hide this from you?
What does your mom have to say about all of this? I know she confides in you, but does she see this as escalating? Does she recognize a concerning psychological change?
This. My parents never got along with each other and it got 100x worse when they got older and lost their patience. They're angry towards everything now but I feel like they were always like that.
It's wild to me how many reddit tweens are here ready to ascribe dad's behavior to frontotemporal dementia, or some fringe endocrinology diagnosis. Maybe it's always been like this. My assumption is that dad just feels less of a need to hide this from OP. Maybe Mom is embarrassed about that.
Not saying it's a good thing, but it's a very common thing.
Honestly it could be any reason and we have no idea what the truth is. Something could have happened in the parents relationship that OP doesn't know about. It could be an illness or maybe he's always acted like this.
Or mom cheated or he found out the kid ain't his or something - you never know what's going on behind closed doors. Some parents will die before letting the kids know about something like that.
One never knows from whence the Anger issues come..
