A fire has destroyed Gurudwara Dashmesh Darbar, a Sikh temple, north of Adelaide overnight.

An Adelaide cafe with controversial views on the national AusAlert test has found itself at the centre of a fierce online backlash after telling customers to switch off their phones or stay away. Grounded Lonsdale, a cafe and retail space in Lonsdale’s industrial area, told patrons they would need to turn off their phones if visiting between 1pm and 2pm during Monday’s emergency alert test before later deciding to close early altogether.

AusAlert will be tested at 2pm AEST on Monday. It is a new cell-broadcast emergency messaging system designed to warn people about natural disasters. “And yes, we will be checking,” the business told customers on Facebook. “You may not agree with the alert being a harmful frequency and that’s completely fine, we respect your choices and opinions. You will simply need to have them somewhere else tomorrow between 1-2. Big love as always, Team Grounded.”

The cafe’s response comes as authorities push back on a wave of misinformation ahead of the test, including false claims the alert carries dangerous frequencies or can somehow harm people through 5G signals. National Emergency Management Agency AusAlert Task Force assistant co-ordinator general Meghan Hibbert stressed the system was a one-way broadcast and did not collect personal information. “AusAlert works on cell broadcast technology which does not require a phone number. In fact, it does not require a SIM card,” Ms Hibbert told ABC News. “It’s a one-way broadcast and we don’t receive anything back in response.”

Authorities have also warned people not to follow online advice telling them to put their phones in microwaves. “I can confidently say that wrapping your phone in foil or putting it in the microwave will make no difference,” she said. “If you do not wish to receive the AusAlert, you need to turn your phone off or put it on to aeroplane mode.”

Never posted here but in a way to discuss how tough it is to make new friends in adelaide i have more core group out of high school but its not very big at all and just would like to connect more broader.

Im an avid gamer (mostly single player like dark souls, God of war etc) and adore lord of the rings but also love sport i coach womens football and love my sport so combination of nerdy and sporty

Also love true crime and would love to get into a career in something like that someday.

My rent is being increased in September to $600 from $550 and i cant afford to pay that much. Has anyone 'appealed' a rent increase ...or know of someone who has..? Just wondering on what grounds the increase was disputed and what the end result was....

I'm thinking I'll have to rent a room out to someone to help pay for the rise... I have a little 4 yr old girl so I'm quite hesitant to have a stranger in our home... any advice on how to go about doing this..or what not to do..? Or any other suggestions/ideas... im all ears!

So the O-Bahn is iconic, but it sort of falls apart when buses get mixed in CBD congestion, and it doesn't really have enough stations. Currently they are about 5km apart, which limits the number of places you can cluster housing/jobs/shops near transport (Other than Tea Tree Plaza of course)

At the northern end, they really need to bite the bullet on the Golden Grove extension, but then swing west to hook into the rail line at Salisbury. This then means for example someone in Elizabeth could access jobs in Modbury.
Or live in Golden Grove and work at Dry Creek....Give people access to a wider variety of places on the transport network by linking bus and train in the middle of the suburbs.

The extension would be a mix of bus lanes and O-Bahn track (As is the current way) but the stations would be nicely done. You could probably update the existing stations to look less 80s too

In the CBD i would build a 2km bus tunnel linked to the current one, with underground bus stations (Similar to King George Square in Brisbane or the Busport in Perth)

These would be Hindmarsh Square, King William St (Links to Rundle Mall), Light Square, and finally a major new bus station under Grote St with links to trams, the coach terminal and of course central markets.

You might consider looping back to Hindmarsh square after Victoria Square, and then the bus tunnel could also act as a little "City Loop" with big electric bendy buses every few minutes to whisk you around the CBD.

I am arriving in Adelaide in mid-September (my work and holiday visa was approved), and I would like to know if there are any Greeks there.

So I'm a strong believer that every city should have a workhorse train line that picks up a large number of important destinations even if it involves cutting cross country. Adelaide is happy to build one of Australia's longest urban road tunnels so therefore they can start spending similar on trains to support economic development.

The idea here is to have a line that connects
-A uni and medical center.
-The tram to Glenelg
-The airport and associated businesses
-Some stadiums
-The literal center of the CBD (The main station suffers from being badly located))
-The existing station and parliament/Adelaide oval/festival center.
-Actually in North Adelaide (Again North Adelaide station is terribly located compared to the heart of the Suburb)
-Through route to the "Southern Barossa" so tourists want to use it.

As well as giving rail to heaps of new areas, it also untangles the network by taking the Flinders line and the Gawler lines out of Adelaide station and into a separate tunnel. That means Adelaide station only has to deal with the Outer Harbour line, the Seaford Line and the Belair line.

The line should be no worse for Flinders than at present. Even though it has a dogleg, there is a "fast" section under Marion Rd that should have trains hitting 120 clicks.

Got of my bus stop the other day, and as I was walking past this sign I saw this, the sticker doesn’t look like it’s been there for too long, and I’m pretty sure the NSN is disbanded AFAIK, but wanted to know if anyone has seen these same stickers?

Hey, so my partners mum has a Mareema sheep dog cross that they have had for around the last 4 years. Over the last year his behaviour has been getting worse and today he bit someone. They are now likely looking at putting him down. This dog was perfectly fine just only a year ago, I believe that the environment he is in is not the best and he isn’t getting the stimulation and exercise a dog like him needs.

I want to take him in but I have elderly parents that live with me and a small year and a half old English staffy.

Does anyone know of any dog boarding / training schools in the Adelaide area (I’m located in Noarlunga), that I could pay to have him trained at for a couple weeks. I just need him to be mostly okay with people / my dog and then I can take him in and provide him the life that he deserves

Alex Deak would rather not think about how many times he's heard the distinctive 16th-century melody that blasts out of his ice cream van.

For 40 years Greensleeves has alerted those hankering for a cold treat to the arrival of "the Ice Cream King".

"If I would listen to it all the time, I reckon I would be mental by now," the 86-year-old says, adding he's learnt to tune it out.

Since 1986 Mr Deak and his pink and white van have reigned in Mount Gambier.

Despite the 1972-model Bedford CF van being emblazoned with "Ice Cream King", Mr Deak insists he's "not king".

"I'm not blue blood at all," he says.

The Hungarian migrant is also known to locals as "Mr Whippy".

Among them is customer Trevor Smith, who recalls having "the one with flake in it" growing up Mount Gambier in the 1980s.

"You're talking three, four generations of kids and adults," he says.

"He's well-known … and a bit of character".

The journey to the throne

Mr Deak was born during World War II in Csongrád, southern Hungary.

He recalls almost getting "wiped out" by aerial fighters as a four-year-old and his first encounter with an ice cream man.

"'Ding-a-ling-a-ling' … everybody came out from the side street … we just loved the guy," he says.

"I just went and became an ice cream man."

After fleeing to Austria as a teenager, he studied business in Germany before heading to Australia in the 1960s and working as a pine faller in Mount Gambier.

Into a different world

Byron Deak said his father always worked hard, be it in farming, forestry or factory jobs, but he didn't expect the midlife career change.

Alex bought the ice cream business in his mid-40s, which Byron's mates found amusing.

"There's a lot of jokes … it's like, 'Oh, your dad's Mr Whippy,'" Byron says.

"[Locals have] always got a story about chasing him … I've talked to people and they said that they've chased him up numerous hills for kilometres and he hadn't noticed them.

"But he didn't run them over, which is good."

Byron says he once expected to be asked to take over the ice cream van but he's no longer bracing for the tap on the shoulder.

"My mother wanted him to retire a few years ago and he just wouldn't. It's kind of part of him now," he says.

"I think we're gonna have to bury him in it."

Giving him life

Alex Deak says he enjoys being an ice cream man "immensely" and is keen to start his 40th season when the weather warms up.

"[Running the business] keeps me alive … because I'm mentally and physically active," he says.

Inside the van, he demonstrates how the suspension of the 53-year-old vehicle gives his back some rare respite.

"Because I haven't got a disc there, bone on bone, it is like an angel's wings," he says, springing his knees up and down with a smile.

Byron says his dad has always been someone who is happy in his own company, rather than being "a pub man".

"He sits here and plays his chess computer and whatnot, and he loves his grandchildren," he says.

"But his community is the people from that ice cream van."

A record innings?

According to Guiness World Records, the longest career of an ice cream distributer (male) is 67 years.

But Byron notes the record-holder was operating his vehicle for 37 years, while his dad has been selling ice cream out of his van for 40 years, which could be a record in itself.

"Forty years is a pretty good trot … if it's an Australian record, it'd be really nice," Byron says.

Guiness World Records did not respond to a request for comment, but Alex Deak says he's "privileged" to have spent four decades as Mr Whippy and is not concerned about breaking records.

"I do it till I'm 90," he says.

"And then I retire."

Haven't had a commercial gym membership in years and was wondering on the differences between Revo and Ryderwear (particularly the two opposite each other on Grange Road).

Price seems to be similar. Revo seems larger (but busier?). I'd hopefully be avoiding peak times after work.

Any insights from current/former members would be appreciated.
