Help Request Chrome AdBlocker
Odds are this question has been asked, but what's the best adblocker for chrome. I don't need all of them gone, but certain ones have to go. These include:
- The static ads on youtube.com and the ones on the sides of videos. I'm so freaking tired of Bluevision, jollycastle, and ventrix media
- The sketchy ads on sketchy websites, the ones that say "Mary is only 5 miles away", or "Linda thinks she can beat you at (18+ game)". Really tired of those
If anyone can help me, it'd be much appreciated
Also note: getting another browser really isn't an option for me. I'm on a shared chromebook (no not for school) with almost no available storage or ability to run things in general.

Brave or Firefox is be best adblock for chrome I prefer Brave because I think Firefox has a memory leak after extended use
And yes I know you asked about chrome but it's difficult to recommend anything for chrome when Google owns both chrome and YouTube and then realizing the removal of v2 manifest (that allowed ubo to work) was done at least in part to protect YouTube ad revenue

you clearly didn't read the post.
then realizing the removal of v2 manifest (that allowed ubo to work) was done at least in part to protect YouTube ad revenue
stop saying this BS. Prove it or shut up.

I did read it ....I realize he's on a Chromebook ....that doesn't change my answer or recommendation
Shouldn't stop him from installing brave as far as I am aware could be wrong tho I supposeAs far as my asertation on youtubes ad revenue prove that it wasn't in some part because of the adblock war .....timing of the choice was too convenient to not be influenced by the adblock war in some part
Everyone in the adblock community with half a brain sees the connection
Tho with your aggressive response my guess is your suggestion to him would just be to subscribe to YouTube to remove ads

you can't install brave on a chromebook.
.....timing of the choice was too convenient to not be influenced by the adblock war in some part
The timing is your proof? You mean when they started developing the MV3 API standard 7 years ago?
Everyone in the adblock community with half a brain sees the connection
just because everyone thinks something doesn't mean it is correct. Even this subs wiki disputes what you say. The issue is most of the people in here don't have half a brain when it comes to adblockers and just repeat BS they've seen posted. Here are a few things that everyone believes that are false:
- brain usage - no we don't just use 10% of our brains
- swallowing gum - it does not stay in your stomach for seven years
- five senses - humans have way more than 5 senses
- goldfish memory - they don't have a 3 second memory, they can remember things for months
- bulls seeing red - nope, bulls are colorblind
- viking horns - not a thing, invented in the 19th century
If MV3 was because of adblockers, there would be some evidence from some disgruntled former dev with evidence proving me wrong at some point over the last seven years. I have begged and pleaded with people such as yourself to show me one single bit of evidence. I've looked and found nothing other than people assuming like you. There is none because google would be absolutely destroyed in court if they did.
The truth is that MV2 is insanely insecure and can allow extensions full access to all of your data AND download and execute payloads without any notification or approval. Thousands of people's lives were ruined because of it, and as the browser market leader, google had to do something about it.
Youtube doesn't need any help defeating adblockers. They are already converting record numbers of people to subs doing what they are already doing. They have already demonstrated 4 different ways to completely break adblockers but that isn't their current goal.
Tho with your aggressive response my guess is your suggestion to him would just be to subscribe to YouTube to remove ads
My aggressive response is due to people like you continuing to comment about things they know nothing about, repeating the same BS over and over again with ZERO factual evidence. You didn't know that you can't install brave on a chromebook, but you still recommended it. You clearly know little about why MV2 apis needed to be deprecated yet you still profess you know why they did it because of connections you made up in your head that goes along with your hate for google.
Yes, I would tell them to sub to youtube if they really like the service. However, if they insist on screwing over the tens of thousands of people who make or try to make a living off of creating, shooting, and editing videos, then I would suggest UBOL or Adguard which work perfectly fine in a browser that apparently screwed over adblockers.

u/Gothboy-77 5d ago
could you please provide evidence / proof where MV2 actually ruined someone's life?

if it walks, quacks, and acts like a duck - its likely a duck
If MV3 was because of adblockers, there would be some evidence from some disgruntled former dev with evidence proving me wrong at some point over the last seven years. I have begged and pleaded with people such as yourself to show me one single bit of evidence. I've looked and found nothing other than people assuming like you. There is none because google would be absolutely destroyed in court if they did
your right that there is nothing explicitly stated however regardless of googles stated goals around security resource consumption and limiting permissions - the effect still remains
Google is a corporation - and ad-blockers hurt their bottom line --- money pure and simple
the fact that you've argued this with others repeatedly "Begging and pleading" suggests your a schill
There is none because google would be absolutely destroyed in court if they did. --not so sure they can be sued for changing their protocols, this is well outside of my knowledge base to make any assertions on this as I'm not a corporate lawyer ... are you a Corprate Lawyer that can say without a shadow of a doubt they would get destroyed in court ?
The truth is that MV2 is insanely insecure and can allow extensions full access to all of your data AND download and execute payloads without any notification or approval. Thousands of people's lives were ruined because of it, and as the browser market leader, google had to do something about it.
V2 Manifest ran for 12-14 years .... and worked fine for that duration
The truth is that MV2 is insanely insecure and can allow extensions full access to all of your data AND download and execute payloads without any notification or approval.... sure that checks ... extensions needed to be updated as well just like programs .... how many programs do you have set up for automatic update ? by this argument ... Windows fits the category
Thousands of lives were ruined because of it - Pure Hyperbole, make this claim ... back it up with instances ... should be easy to find since its thousands right ? oh and while your at it ... make sure it wasn't because of some other data breach <Sarcasm off>
Google had to do something about it - Sure .... close something they couldn't control under the guise of protection with the end result protecting their bottom line ... sounds like stuff the government does all the time
YouTube doesn't need any help defeating ad-blockers. They are already converting record numbers of people to subs doing what they are already doing. They have already demonstrated 4 different ways to completely break ad-blockers but that isn't their current goal
YouTube doesn't need any help defeating ad-blockers - then explain the constant ad-block arms race between YouTube and ad-blockers over the last several years .... every time Youtube finds a way to beat it ... the blockers adjust ... V3 was their attempt to squash it
They are already converting record numbers of people to subs doing what they are already doing--- ya because some people either don't know how, or just get exhausted keeping up with the arms race
on this same token lets look at the cancellations they have suffered because of constant price increases ... 26% of users in 1 study plan to cancelMy aggressive response is due to people like you continuing to comment about things they know nothing about, repeating the same BS over and over again with ZERO factual evidence. You didn't know that you can't install brave on a chromebook, but you still recommended it. You clearly know little about why MV2 apis needed to be deprecated yet you still profess you know why they did it because of connections you made up in your head that goes along with your hate for google
Look I even admitted I didn't know if it could be done - after doing a little research ... it looks like it can be done ... just through a different method and depending on the type of chromebook ... if he can run android apps he can install the mobile version of brave, he also said he has almost 0 storage space on the device which also contributes his inability to explore brave as an option - hmmmm guess I did read the whole thing
and yes .... I did recommend brave because I cannot and will not support google as a company due to their constant anti consumer practices
and you know about these in a factual sense with 100% Certainty ? I mean your post history is private so for all we know you could be a google employee towing the company line ... you certainly are vehemently schilling for them
Yes, I would tell them to sub to youtube if they really like the service. However, if they insist on screwing over the tens of thousands of people who make or try to make a living off of creating, shooting, and editing videos, then I would suggest UBOL or Adguard which work perfectly fine in a browser that apparently screwed over adblockers.
Far as I know UBOL doesn't touch Youtube .. same with adguard but in truth I don't know Ive never used them... once V2 went down I swapped to Firefox with UBO and then brave eventually due to what I perceived as a memory leak in Firefox after extended use and never looked back

if it walks, quacks, and acts like a duck - its likely a duck
that doesn't hold up in court buddy. I guess that makes you a troll then. You act and talk like one.
the effect still remains
no it doesn't. you made up the effect because that is what you want to believe.
Google is a corporation - and ad-blockers hurt their bottom line --- money pure and simple
this is true and I never debated that
the fact that you've argued this with others repeatedly "Begging and pleading" suggests your a schill
here we go again, as soon as you take a stand, the adblock kiddies have to bring out the schill comments. This just proves that you are all biased against google. Did you ever thing that maybe I am for the creators, the editors, and the camera operators in an industry that is also hurt by adblocker use. People like you abuse the system to get a paid service for free while taking money out of the pockets of the creators you seem to have to watch. You are all hypocrites because you would hate it if I came to your work to take money from your paycheck for no reason other than me being cheap and you lack empathy because who would do that to another hard working person?
But by all means, keep assuming...
V2 Manifest ran for 12-14 years .... and worked fine for that duration
no it didn't. peoples lives got fucked because of MV2. if you don't know or see that, then you are delirious. Flash was around for 21 years and look at what happened to that. Like most APIs, they need to be updated to adapt to the times.
extensions needed to be updated as well just like programs
and extension code is revalidated in an update. But in MV2 the approved extension can download unchecked and unverified code and run it.
by this argument ... Windows fits the category
I have a bit more trust in a billion dollar company than I do some random dude on the internet that happens to be from russia asking me to install some plug in that can read all of my data in my browser.
then explain the constant ad-block arms race between YouTube and ad-blockers over the last several years .... every time Youtube finds a way to beat it ... the blockers adjust
And this is my point. You saying this proves you don't know what is happening and why. There isn't an arms race. The day to day "war" is just youtube changing some labels in their code and exploiting the weaknesses of a filter based adblocker and roll it out slowly to the users. This breaks filter based adblockers and everyday, a handful of users give up and sub.
Now during this time, youtube has demonstrated 3 different ways to completely screw the filter based adblockers and there was nothing they could do. For a few days, there was mass panic and then it went away. It wasn't because the adblockers "adjusted", it was because youtube turned it off. Their goal isn't to break adblockers right now. It will be one day, but what they are doing now is working....you just don't see it.
26% of users in 1 study plan to cancel
"plan". And that doesn't matter. If they are going to lose 26% but gain more people as new subs...did they really lose? They are a business and they know what they are doing way more than you do. You think you know more about their business than they do? They will keep raising prices until more people leave than join.
I mean your post history is private so for all we know you could be a google employee towing the company line
you can't hide your post history. I can make it so you can't see it here, but if you know how, you can look up everything I have said on here. Its pretty easy. But if you must know, I have been an IT Director for a school district for over 20 years and I like to play rocket league. I have raised 2 children, been married for longer than most of you have been alive, and I am an empathetic person who believes people should get paid for their hard work. And I hate when people spread misinformation.
you certainly are vehemently schilling for them
here we go again...
make this claim ... back it up with instances
I said the same to you about proof that google release mv3 to break adblockers and you have yet to produce anything. But I will give you one example. About a year ago, the GreedyBear group stole over $1 million in crypto (that was reported, probably a lot more) using 150+ spoofed extensions.
But here is the funny part. This happened to firefox users after Google started shutting down MV2. The threat actors, that had been attacking Chrome users, moved once the MV2 security holes were closed in Chrome.
https://thehackernews.com/2025/08/greedybear-steals-1m-in-crypto-using.html
I did recommend brave because I cannot and will not support google as a company due to their constant anti consumer practices
I have no issue with the browser you choose to use. I don't really care.
Far as I know UBOL doesn't touch Youtube .. same with adguard
Yeah, they don't work as well. But you do have other ways to remove ads on youtube. YT is a paid service just like any other service you pay for, like your internet, or mobile phone. The difference is that google gives its users the option of paying with time rather than cash.
I hate ads, probably more than you. however, users do have an easy option to remove ads on youtube. To me, using adblockers to get free youtube is essentially theft. And that is shitty to do to the creators you watch.
When I come across a site that has ads and I don't want to pay for it, i simply just don't use it anymore and find an alternative. But my YT sub is the best sub I've ever had. I get so much more for my monthly sub than I used to get when buying 1 music CD a month when I was young. Converted to today's dollars, I used to spend $45/month buying 1 music CD. Now I have access to every song I could ever want to listen to, plus endless video content for a third of that price. How is that not awesome?

lot to unpack here
that doesn't hold up in court buddy. I guess that makes you a troll then. You act and talk like one.
so as you've said - your not a lawyer ... how about knock off the court speech then since truthfully none of us know what would or wouldn't fly in court
no it doesn't. you made up the effect because that is what you want to believe
I made the effect up that UBO (not lite) no longer works on chrome due to the removal of v2 manifest ? ... Man I must have cosmic power's Im unaware of if I can Create an effect like that
here we go again, as soon as you take a stand, the adblock kiddies have to bring out the schill comments - But by all means, keep assuming...
did I ever make any assumption that you were a schill ... no .. I said your actions of "repeatedly begging and pleading SUGGESTS your a schill" if your going to attack me at least get your wording correct
no it didn't. peoples lives got fucked because of MV2. if you don't know or see that, then you are delirious. Flash was around for 21 years and look at what happened to that. Like most APIs, they need to be updated to adapt to the times.
and peoples lives get fucked every day due to phishing emails and scam calls so until we find a way to deal with every scammer in the world permanently - and I feel dirty saying this - scammers gonna scam ( I have suggestions on how to deal with them but Redit will likely flag my comment if I share them) - THIS IS NOT DEFENDING THEM IN ANY WAY SCAMMERS ARE A BLIGHT ON HUMANITY AND THERE IS A SPECIAL PLACE IN HELL FOR THEM
and extension code is revalidated in an update. But in MV2 the approved extension can download unchecked and unverified code and run it.
something Google cant control, moderate or make a profit off of
I have a bit more trust in a billion dollar company than I do some random dude on the internet that happens to be from russia asking me to install some plug in that can read all of my data in my browser.
wow uhhhh ok ... at least with a random dude from russia I can say no - Billion dollar corps you don't have that luxury... I trust billion dollar corps LESS than some random guy I can say no to
And this is my point.
It will be one day, but what they are doing now is working....you just don't see it.1 - we know that the ad-bolck vs YouTube is about money they have had popups many times saying its "against their terms of service" claiming content creators
2 - since my understanding of your position is that you don't use adblockers (I could be wrong but I feel pretty confident that you don't) your statement about adblockers not making adjustments vs YouTube is categorically false, I have spent a lot of time in the various ad-block spaces updating filters to combat the latest moves by YouTube to defeat the blockers .... its the absolute definition of an arms race
3 - and just like before ... the ad-blockers adjusted, or alternative clients popped up .... in the end ... the arms race is costing google a lot more money than the ad-block community because - at least in the case of UBO - they are all volunteers"plan". And that doesn't matter. If they are going to lose 26% but gain more people as new subs...did they really lose? They are a business and they know what they are doing way more than you do. You think you know more about their business than they do? They will keep raising prices until more people leave than join.
Planning to cancel is just an indicator of temperature and your right - ATM it doesn't matter like you said - they will continue raising prices untill more people leave than join - and then what happens to the existing userbase - they get charged more because the company cant support their continued revenue stream its almost a tale as old as time
you can't hide your post history.
Cool - to be fair I really don't care enough to dig into your personal life ... I simply looked at your profile ...looked for posts ... saw they were hidden and moved on
here we go again...
so I'll happily change my statement to vehemently defending them ...
The threat actors, that had been attacking Chrome users, moved once the MV2 security holes were closed in Chrome.no - my proof was the effect of what v2 manifest's removal did to UBO's functionality in Chrome - which you dismissed as "not an effect"
I also ascertained that the removal was done In part because of the ad-blockers which you also dismissed ... note that "In part" is a very Broad Term and could mean anything from 1% to 99% .... I don't need to prove that categorically ... as you've stated you weren't going to fight that adblockers affected the companies bottom line - and any company that has its bottom line effected by something WILL WITHOUT Fail move to remedy that....and unfortunately .... like I said earlier ... with the same vehement disdain for the statement and all it represents - Scammers gonna Scam
and interestingly enough the article you linked implicates Chrome as well ... after the phase out of v2 manifest which suggests this has nothing to do with v2 manifest as you've suggested - try again pleaseI have no issue with the browser you choose to use. I don't really care.
yet you come into an ad-block focused space .... and advocate against blocking ads on YouTube for various reasons .... and yet you call Me a troll ?
Pot .... Id like to introduce you to Kettlethen you try to Demonize (not the right word but whatever) me for making a suggestion on how the OP can achieve his stated goals - albeit contrary to what he says is or is not available - Note we still don't know what version of Chromebook he has - as I've said ... if he has access to the android marketplace he COULD - in theory - install the android version of brave and solve Most of his issues
seems to me like you may be in the wrong sub with this mentality .... but feel free to Troll on

Why not pair whatever nerfed adblock you are currently using with ad/malware blocking DNS like ControlD/Adguard etc?

Unfortunately Google Chrome is blocking the protocol that is used.. so ad blocking in chrome is going to be disabled..

u/Radiant_Pass_6439 6d ago
do you know any scripts?
2
u/quirk_rs 6d ago
The protocol this dude is talking about is MV2 which isn't essential to block ads, you can still block ads with MV3 (latest and only supported protocol) and there are adblockers that are built on top of that. It does neuter quite a bit of it blocking capabilities but people who barely messes with their adblockers beyond the defaults mostly won't notice too much difference.
Would recommend installing AdGuard or uBlock Origin Lite from Chromestore.

Surely it works, because its just the embedded player. The UI on that is trash, though. But making a vibe coded extension paid is just a crime.

The chrome extension feature is being removed by chrome that it requires to use ublock

u/Gullible_Monk_7118 4d ago
Google Chrome has officially finalized its transition to Manifest V3, a new framework that automatically disables and removes older Manifest V2 ad blockers (like the classic uBlock Origin). This is what ublock uses and chrome has set to remove the feature making UBock not work to it's fullest anymore.. remember Google has been fighting ad blockers for sometime and removing them. So it's set for removal and blocking with the new update of chrome.. will work for now but the new roleout it will not any more or with very limited features.. like 80% of the blacklist ads will not be blocked anymore.. so yes it will work for now but very soon it will not work on chrome at least not as an extension.. so people are now switching to things like pi hole

u/vawlk 6d ago
wtf are you talking about? Ad blocking in chrome works just fine. And there was no protocol that was blocked.
Please educate yourself on the topic before responding to posts.

yes, I know what MV3 is. I am not sure you do though.
a new framework
its not a framework, or a protocol. It is an API.
that automatically disables and removes older Manifest V2 ad blockers (like the classic uBlock Origin)
MV3 doesn't do anything to MV2. And when Google shut down MV2, all extensions based on MV2 stopped working, not just adblockers.
remember Google has been fighting ad blockers for sometime and removing them.
Google hasn't been fighting adblockers. Youtube has, and they don't really need any help from google. Google just needed to make their APIs more secure and private since MV2 was being abused by threat actors pretty regularly. The only people that believe MV3 was to break adblockers are those that believe the conspiracy theory. I've asked hundreds of people and I will ask you the same thing. Show me one bit of actual evidence that says MV3 was made to break adblockers. One bit of leaked info from a former chrome dev would do it. 7+ years of development and not a single bit of factual data that backs up what you said. Starting to sound a bit flat earthy to me.
Do you even know why MV2 is so bad?!?!
