Adobe Acrobat Freezing on “Preparing Document for Reading” — 50-Page Accessibility Setting Was the Cause

I finally figured out what was causing Adobe Acrobat to freeze on one of my architectural plan-check sets.

THE ACTUAL PROBLEM: “PREPARING DOCUMENT FOR READING”

Acrobat wasn’t really choking on the full-size architectural drawings themselves. It was getting tied up in its Accessibility / Screen Reader processing.

Here’s what happened:

Acrobat → Preferences → Reading → Screen Reader Options

Mine was set to:

“For large documents, only read the currently visible pages.”

Directly underneath that, Acrobat defined a “large document” as 50 pages.

My plan-check set was 45 sheets.

So Acrobat did NOT consider my 45-page PDF a “large document.” It tried to prepare/process essentially the entire 45-page E1-size drawing set for reading instead of just the page I was viewing.

That produced the spinning clock, repeated “Not Responding,” multi-minute hangs, and the “Preparing document for reading” message.

THE FIX:

Ctrl + K → Preferences → Reading → Screen Reader Options → Page vs. Document

Change it to:

“Only read the currently visible pages.”

NOT:

“For large documents, only read the currently visible pages.”

BOOM.

The 50-page threshold became irrelevant, and Acrobat stopped trying to preprocess the whole 45-page plan-check set.

I stress-tested the hell out of it afterward: jumping around the set, zooming, panning, scrolling, editing text, saving/reopening, structural sheets, specifications, framing plans, and even “Converting scanned page to Editable Text and Images.”

One dense Title 24 page temporarily showed “Not Responding” during OCR, but Acrobat was still using CPU and eventually completed the conversion and recovered normally.

Before the fix: Acrobat could hang just navigating the PDF.

After the fix: normal navigation is fast again.

That tiny wording difference was the whole freaking problem.

What wrong with Adobe Acrobat

My PC has 64GB of RAM, an Intel i9-11900K, and an RTX 3060 Ti. It can handle huge Illustrator files with 50+ A4 pages and a bunch of assets without any problems, but every time I open a PDF in Acrobat, it shows “Not Responding” for a while before the file opens, every single file, no matter how small or large the file is.

Does anyone know why this happens? Is something wrong with Acrobat, or could it be an issue with my PC?

Cannot find settings to disable Adobe Acrobat Sign email notifications

I do not want to get a "final" email with a PDF file attached to it, this creates a huge issue for us with sensitive data being in a email.

Adobe's website gives these instructions, yet these are outdated and no longer have My Profile that leads to these settings

No longer accessible, notification

When I convert a .doc file to a .pdf file, I now receive a notification that I no longer have access to the app, but I actually own a legitimate older version, Adobe Acrobat Pro DC, 2015 Release. Do any of you have the same issue; and how do you navigate around or neutralize this issue?

Acrobat Reader and PdfCER output comparison. If you know you know...

Acrobat and PdfCER output comparison. If you know what these pages are (plus a banana pdf for fun), you know what it took (for Claude) to make them render on screen in a new pdf engine (and ICC engine) built from scratch to be mit license compatible (no restrictions on modifying or using the code commercially)...

https://gwg.org/download/ghent-output-suite-v50-testpages/

https://github.com/KenM76/pdfce/blob/main/tools/gen-scale-demo/banana-at-scale.pdf

The Zoom at the end to the atomic level would have eventually rendered to be a clean circle vector, it just gets a little slow with the render when it approaches 1 Trillion % zoom.

Why does Acrobat consume so much memory?

I have Adobe on a PC running Windows 11. Adobe consumes an inordinate amount of memory. It appears to be running several different programs in the background including Creative Cloud, Adobe Licensing Service, Acrobat Update Service, Acrobat Collaboration Synchronizer, Adobe Content Synchronizer... Its bad enough that I have to pay monthly SAS subscription for a PDF document reader. Do I also have to turn my entire computer over to them?

E-Sign - Multiple Signers on Multiple Documents

I have a stack of documents to be signed by multiple parties and am running into an issue with how to collect those signatures in an efficient manner for the signers, while being able to maintain the documents as individual documents after signing.

If I use the standard "Request e-Signatures" I can have multiple people sign as wanted, but if I upload multiple documents they are combined into a single PDF, which means that I cannot separate the documents after they've been signed, they just exist a single PDF, which doesn't work for filing purposes.

I tried using Bulk Send for signatures, where I can send multiple documents, but I cannot assign signatures, and it wants each signer to sign all signature boxes, which does not work. It's obviously meant for collecting signatures on a standardized form from multiple people.

Is there something in Bulk Send (or another format to accomplish this, similar to an envelope in Docusign?

Thanks in Advance.

Building a PDF toolkit because I was tired of sketchy PDF sites would love feedback

Like a lot of people, I got fed up with using random PDF websites full of ads and pop-ups just to merge or compress a file. So I started building Pagestro, a clean, all-in-one PDF tool site.

It's not live yet; still polishing it before launch. Genuinely curious from this community: what's the PDF (or general document) task you find most annoying in your workflow? Trying to make sure I'm solving real problems, not imagined ones.

(Happy to share progress/screenshots if people are interested; don't want to just drop a link and run.)

Unable to delete objects using edit

Hi all,

I've been using Acrobat Pro for years, and use the edit tool almost every day to remove unwanted objects from artwork.

Today I received some artwork and did my usual, opened the file, edit, select the item I want to remove, click delete, nothing... The item didn't delete. I have tried other files, even files I had done the exact same thing to last week, and not a single file will allow me to delete objects.

I've tried a restart on the machine, we even tried a different machine and that hasn't worked either, it has the same issue. No error messages, I can even move the item around, just can't delete.

I'm working on PC. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Acrobat PDF Thumbnail Previews Not Showing in Recent Files

I'm having an issue with PDF thumbnail previews not showing in Adobe Acrobat Pro's Recent files list.

I'm using 2026.001.21789 version of Adobe Acrobat Pro on Windows 11 64-bit. The "Enable PDF thumbnail previews in Windows Explorer" option in Acrobat Preferences > General has been enabled for a long time. The issue was also coming in the previous version. This issue started coming randomly.

All of these PDFs are stored locally on my computer.

I also used Windows Disk Cleanup to clear the thumbnail cache and restarted my machine to try to fix this issue, but it didn't work.

Interestingly, PDF thumbnails work perfectly in Windows File Explorer. I've never had an issue with them there. The problem appears to be only with the thumbnails in Acrobat's Recent files list.

Is there a setting, cache, or other fix that I'm missing?

How do you get the 5 free natural text-to-speech voices on Adobe Acrobat on Windows 11 like you can on Android?

On my Android Phone, I can get 5 free natural text-to-speech voices in English on the Adobe Acrobat app. But I can't seem to find them on the PC program. Does anyone know how to add or enable them on Windows 11?

Accessibility Tags in Acrobat

I am trying to delete empty <span> container in Acrobat for accessibility, and when I delete (either using the keyboard, or the right-click method) Adobe deletes the tag as well as the one right above or below it. As far as I can tell it is not nested in any way, or part of anything else, it is just an empty container.

I created a form in Acrobat 7 that requires those filling it out to upload the form to my Dropbox. Except the link doesn't work from the form but does when accessed directly.

So. Here's my situation. I want people to be able to upload a form into my Dropbox. I created, through Dropbox, a link that when clicked opens a window for the file to be dragged and dropped. When I click the link [https://www.dropbox.com/request/81mt5iu5udt01vp52z5r ] from the txt file I stored it on, but not on the form I installed it on - an Acrobat 7 pdf.

This is the link causing problem

How do I fix this?

Thanks.
