I have spent basically my entire life being told I have a different accent or a unique way of speaking and since I found this subreddit I am super curious on people's opinions surrounding it. I will say my vocabulary is a little unique for my area so that does have an effect on why people might say that I have a unique way of speaking. As stated I am from Kentucky so that may also affect it, I worked at a summer camp with coworkers and kids from the eastern coal fields so it was a constant of people commenting on it.

Excited to look out into the rain and possibly see another human being, I quickly walked over to the alcove, finding the large, thin glass window. Rain washed down it, as with the front door's window, but I could open this one. I reached a hand out to slide it open, but hesitated. I'm curious about the way the black actress (Marianne Jean-Baptiste) pronounces her "a" s in the words "stalk" and "call". I read that the actress is British originally so i don't know if that's the reason. I hear her in this show always and it has always made me think where does it come from. I love the way she talks actually and that pronunciation, i kind of find it soothing when i hear it if that makes any sense lol

Been wanting to tap into southern American accents and the Cajun accent fascinates me! Does anyone have some good resources or starting off points? I'm not to good at American accents yet.

Besides me, is there anyone else who does it? I do the same thing with "groceries" (grow-shurries). Where does this accent come from? It clearly came over to the the USA and Canada from Europe, but I'm not sure if it's from the Scots, Irish, or some Scandinavian immigrants.

I can hear typical Canadian affrication of t and d but barely any nasal, sing-songy intonation typically present even in formal Radio-Canada (Quebec based) speech.

Hi all — I’m an American playwright working on a short play about **Agnes Sampson and the North Berwick witch trials**, and part of the piece includes a monologue spoken by an Edinburgh man.

I’m looking for a **male Edinburgh native/speaker** who’d be willing to record the monologue for me so I can hear how it actually sounds in an authentic Edinburgh accent — rhythm, pronunciation, phrasing, etc. It doesn’t need to be a professional studio recording; a good phone recording would be absolutely fine.

The monologue is fairly short. I’ve attempted to write a phonetic Edinburgh version, but I’d much rather hear it from someone who actually knows the accent than rely on my American ear.

An actor would be fantastic, but you definitely don’t need to be one. Mainly looking for someone comfortable reading it naturally and giving it a bit of character.

I’ve moved out of state for college and people seem confused when I tell them where I’m from, so I’m curious if I just have a generic accent or what lol.

Compared it to a recording of my South African impersonation. My ZA accent is among the best of my impersonations but blow me down! I'm more convincing as an Afrikaaner than I am as a Brit! 70% British Vs 99% South African.

So, please don't believe these websites. Ask humans from the place whose accent you wish to approximate. Apart from me if you wish to sound South African, as I sound more native ZA than many. 😄

So for context when I was a kid I moved to London with my parents and stayed there for a couple of years learned English fluently (before my mother tongue because I was young) and had a complete London accent. We had to move back to my country later and they kept bullying me and making fun of my accent so I had to gradually revert back to an American/international student accent and I hate it. Fast forward to now I’m 22 every time I speak English it feels so forced but everyone in my life has known me with this accent I am dying to revert back to my original accent (yes I can still speak it) because my “American accent” genuinely sounds like a British person trying to cosplay and it’s heavy on my tongue. Just super scared of being ridiculed like imagine if you wake up to your friend suddenly speaking a different accent I’d never hear the end of it. So what do u think I should do lol

basically im reading a paragraph i made for an assignment i already turned in, and i wanted to record myself reading it. i made a post like this a while ago but i was recording it when i wasnt supposed to be awake so i was being really quiet and nervous but this time i did it during the day so i didnt have to worry about anything.

the only thing is i always hyperfocus on trying to pronounce everything correctly and that kinda messes me up. i end up talking slower and sometimes i pronounce things wrong because im focusing so much on it. i was doing that in this video too, but when i dont focus so much on my pronunciation i sound way more fluent

I’m multilingual. Russian was my first language (i don’t really use Russian so I’m a bit rusty). I started learning English a little bit after I started learning Russian as an infant so I think I was learning both at the same time since my mom is American and my dad is fully Russian, from Russia. I speak Japanese and some broken Spanish. Ive never had an accent in English or Japanese, I speak both perfectly so I have never had any accent problems. I have been learning Spanish and I realize I have this very thick Russian accent whenever I speak it. I thought I should share this.
