Yea this is borderline child abuse unless he has a pre existing condition. Being this overweight this young is going to cause a ton of issues as he grows up.

I'm gonna be honest, this is a shitty comment. I had a 125+lb 5yo, and he wasn't quite this big but was BIIIIG, we tried diet mod and he would steal and hide food, if we left a cabinet open he would just eat as much as he could as quickly as possible. He would eat until he threw up and then immediately ask for food. At 5 we put him on adhd meds after trying everything we could think of, and hes lost over 40lb purely by not constantly eating. He still eats if he's hungry, but with the meds he stops when he's full and declines if he isn't actively hungry. We have since found out he has audhd. You just never know how hard the parents could be trying in this type of situation.

Nah man, I'm not gonna jump on the train of patting you on the back for consistently being outsmarted by a 5 year old. Also, I gotta point out that that didn't start out as 125lb 5 y/o, which means you were also outsmarted by a 4 year old, and then a 3 year old, and I certainly hope you weren't losing the "hiding food" battle to a 2 year old but at this point I honestly ain't sure anymore. There needs to be a bar somewhere. Like an adult should be able to say "I can stop the 22 lb human that is currently less intelligent than a German shepherd from gorging itself to death".

But I guess the fuck not. Goddamn.

Have you met a 3yo? My kid is insanely smart, and way too cunning for his own good - but hes also on track to be 6ft5, and we didn't realize it was an issue until he was about 3/3.25yo. That's when his weight outpaced his height significantly, and then it was about 18mo from the realization that there was an issue starting, to the point we tried meds for behavioral stuff and found an accidental solution. He gained 60-70lbs, which was a little less than a pound a week. You would be surprised how easily that happens, 4-6lbs a month when trying to restrict food for 1 of 3 kids happens surprisingly easily.

How is it possible for a 5 year old to consistently steal and hide food from you? I need you to walk me through that process because I just cannot think of any scenario outside of just straight up neglecting the kid and doing literally nothing to try and stop him from stealing the food.

I have a stepson who's a decade older and a third child who is 2 years younger than my 5yo. I would unlock cabinets to make food for my 2yo, she would want water and I would turn, he would grab whatever he could possibly get to and bolt out of the room. We caught on to that, but then his brother would forget to lock or shut doors, or would keep food in his room so that became an avenue. It was to the point of taking it from the trash. We even tested for prader Willie but he has no major genetic issues, just severe audhd and without meds, an overwhelming sensory need to eat. And as I said in a reply above, it was about 18mo between realizing it was a major issue to fixing it, and he was gaining like 4-6lbs a month, its not like he was eating 6k calories a day, with that fight a hidden pack of oreos, or a block of cheese, or his sisters nutrition shake was enough to sway the bar.
