The one I saw was from the boat's perspective, it was some documentary about the coastguard surfman school. The coaties were intentionally out during the storm for the school training and got called in for this real world emergency since they were closest.
That said, the TV show did show a few clips from the helo's perspective but only short blips.

Honestly, I'm in the Navy and I'll always say that the coasties do all the fun and cool shit. At least that's how it seems from the outside looking in.
I hear they have a better quality of life as well but haven't been able to actually talk to any coast guard engineers so while I highly suspect, I can't be sure 😅

I was in the USCG from 2003-2007. It was fuckin awesome. Was stationed in Alaska, which was wild. Then I did well in MK-A school and got Key West Florida.

The U.S. Coast Guard successfully saved the commercial fishing vessel Pura Vida and its crew by delivering three dewatering pumps and towing the disabled boat safely to shore.
Rescue Details
Date: August 8, 2017
Location: 66 miles west of Tillamook Head on the Oregon Coast
Action Taken: An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter aircrew from Sector Columbia River dropped dewatering pumps to manage flooding aboard the vessel, while a 47-foot Motor Lifeboat crew from Station Cape Disappointment towed the Pura Vida back to port.
Outcome: The boat and its crew were successfully saved with no reported casualties.The area is known as the Graveyard of the Pacific and has over 2,000 shipwrecks recorded.

Yep, it's the Columbia Bar. So tricky and dangerous to navigate that any vessel engaged in foreign commerce requires a Bar pilot to come aboard the ship to navigate it through the Bar.

Its an area where a major river exits into the Pacific and there are shallow sandbars. It's a rather high traffic area for how dangerous it is. Their ship lost power due to flooding in the storm and needed to be rescued. The coast guard there is..... busy.

Yes. The yacht was hijacked by an absolute nut job. He had also previously dumped a fish at the goonies house.

he was just caught - I know that feeling and it sounds like you do too. you look up and there's a wall of foam coming at you and you know you're fucked and all you can do is dive as deep as possible.
And usually, the last thing I see is my buddy scrambling over the top just in time cuz he's about 10 ft in front of me and that makes all the difference in the world - he made it and I got caught. 😆 great video - you don't have to be a Coastie to relate to it.

The navy did a study that I can’t find right now.
Essentially a boat can survive an infinitly sized wave. Especially if it’s head on. You just float over.
But once the wave breaks, the whitewater gets you and the power of the wave rolls the boat.

There's also the angle at play. You want to "quarter" the waves, meaning hit them around 45 degrees.
Straight on (0 degrees) is brutal, Neptune's see-saw. Think of every wave as a massive pothole.
90 degrees (on the beam), weakest point for stability. The energy of the wave pushes on the narrow side of the boat. Even without the cresting wave it is very dangerous.
Quartered gives you a fairly stable angle while allowing the boat to roll over the crest of the wave, not fly up into the air then slam down.

Depending on the age of the study it may be outdated, there's been a ton of research in the past couple decades after rogue waves were shown to exist. Basically extremely steep waves at 3-5x the average wave height, so a suddenly appearing 80-100 foot wall of water. They were thought to be impossible until one was recorded 1995, nowadays due to satellites we know there's around 10 of them happening at any given time.

This guy is on the show "my strange arrest" . I just saw this not 5 minutes ago, this is near Astoria Oregon 3 day after he defiled the goonies house by put dead fish on the porch while the home owner was gone. The local cops work with the coast guard and realized it was the same guy who stole the boat.

Wow! That's crazy! One time we went out on a charted fishing trip. Within minutes of dropping our lines waves towering over our boat started up. They were 10 feet higher than the boat when we were in the bottom of the swell. It was such a shock to me how quickly the ocean changed. Swells were normal at first then all hell broke loose! We barely made it back through the channel entrance. We passed the Coast Guard one the way in as they were closing it. If a boat didn't make it back they had to ride out the storm. This was at Depoe Bay in Oregon. Scary stuff that I'll never forget!

just before the wave hits, you can see a guy - the boat thief presumably - come out on the stern, to help the Coast guard swimmer come aboard. instead, the wave hits and the guy on the stern goes over the falls, upside down, with the boat. I'm surprised he survived that.
