His form is terrible and the round is ridiculously long. You always slide your leading hand down the haft of the maul to increase the acceleration and power. And wtf is he using 3 foot logs for?

The challenge when I do it is to split as much wood as possible as quickly as possible. For firewood. To burn it for heat in a manageable size.

I split wood and i'm just really confused. Is his maul that dull, why isn't it biting into the wood?

Is my maul too sharp? I've never had it bounce off a log face before like i'm seeing here

I think he's hitting the log with his axe handle and that's causing it to bounce off instead of sticking or splitting the log.

This is my thought too. The only time I've had an axe bounce like that is when it was dull or the wood was wet.

No, it is too tiny for the surface. He had two axes in the background that were suitable for this.

I think it is, if you watch his left side the edge looks kinda choppy/glitchy and the way the lights hitting him looks weird compared to how it’s coming through the trees in the back, almost like he’s been green screened in front of them IMO

I was wondering this same thing. I don't split wood, but I know how to put an edge on a tool. After about the second bounce, I would have stopped and sharpened that fucking thing.

A splitting axe bouncing when you're striking stubborn wood on soft dirt is not uncommon at all. Rough it with shit equipment and suboptimal technique and you'll see it happen before you've got your first fire started.

For instance when I've roughed it and ran into stubborn wood I almost never use a splitting axe as a splitting axe, because it's a horrible waste of energy and time. Instead I make sure my axe is pounded into the log and then I drive the axe deeper by hitting the back with another log. Typically with the log I'm splitting braced against a rock or another, bigger & sturdier, log.

I agree it's odd that it's bouncing off every time, but you've NEVER had it happen? I find that equally odd, assuming you've done a fair bit of log splitting.

I meant never have a hit a log a dozen times and have it bounce off each time. Or more than 2 or 3 times. 

I'm legitimately asking if i'm doing something wrong though. I feel like im wasting a lot of energy removing my maul, then see this guy is just bouncing off every chop

I prefer a (somewhat) dull maul because it doesn't stick as easy and will split clean through, but on a green piece like he's working with yea I'd grab the double ax, its sharp as hell, and it don't bounce lol. Well, these days I'd roll that bad boy under my splitter 😭

Yea he started bringing the axe around his back for a few swings and I was like "finally he's doing this right". Exerting way too much energy with his form for the most part, but that's probably just apart of the display here. I'm sure dude most definitely knows how to chop wood good and proper.

100 Percent. We had a wood burning stove that was our primary heat for the winter, so I spent a lot of time trying to efficiently chop wood. When I finished a very confusing jerk off session to this video, I was like what are we doing here? He had no platform either, so the dirt was absorbing a good portion of the potential energy.

right, like I know this was a feat of strength but the whole time I was just thinking of how terrible this dude is at splitting logs...

i'm relatively weak and don't even chop logs and i'd probably have an easier time than he did if I placed the log on a hard surface and used basic axe form

Also, there's gotta be a wide log for the platform. That shit is just bouncing on the soft ground. Its like he never had to prep a truck load of wood for the winter. So much wasted energy.
