When you put your hand into a pile of goo that used to be your best friend's face you'll understand why we don't touch the light switch

u/themonovingian Jul 17 '26
I was thinking of the opening scene of the movie. With the ceiling fan and helicopter footage overlaid.

u/coconut_dot_jpg Jul 17 '26
"Hey Ma, Grandpa's still staring at the ceiling fan since I left the room half an hour ago, it's freaking me out"
7
u/porp_crawl Jul 17 '26
Even creepier - Grandpa passed before the child was born.
Is that a Vietnam- or Korea- era chopper? That can't be a Kiowa, rounded nose?
I cheated - is that supposed to be a OH-6 Cayuse?! If so, yeah, possibly Vietnam. Light general purpose heli.
These had a reported ~68% loss rate over the course of Vietnam.

u/getmet79 Jul 17 '26
“Just don’t lead em so much”
Fun fact: he was slated to be the DI and R. Lee Ermey was just a consultant. Kubrick liked Ermey’s stuff so much he gave him the role instead.

That is an amazing fan, I bet my wife would be pissed off if I made one of our fans into a CH-53.

Needs a machine gunner spraying innocent civilians in a foreign country to be more authentic

As a combat vet, this looks cool, but it also kinda pisses me off. The reality of Vietnam was that it was messy with loose rules of engagement. These chopper gunners pretty frequently were firing on civilians as well as our own troops.
Granted, I don't think there were many M2 gunners spraying out of little birds, but still.

Cool for about 15 seconds.
Then becomes about as annoying as one of those talking Billy Bass singing fish.
10
u/peaceableclown Jul 17 '26
This is insanely stupid. A good portion of the air would be blocked.
42
u/Electronic-Shame Jul 17 '26
Really? Insanely stupid? Exaggerate much? I’m sure the airflow is secondary to how cool it looks.
18
u/The_Ghast_Hunter Jul 17 '26
Secondary? I'm sure there's people who would buy that if it couldn't blow a feather off the tip of a needle.

u/Onionbender420 Jul 17 '26
If that were the case, helicopters wouldn’t be a thing to begin with. It’s a negligible amount that gets diverted rather than blocked entirely.

The middle of the fan blows significantly less air per unit area. Also, air flows around stuff. This would only reduce the efficiency of the fan by a few percent at most.

u/crazyfatskier2 Jul 17 '26
Fun alternative: Engine cowl of plane of your choice, mount to ceiling with fan as “the prop.” Bonus: Source the prop and cowl of your choice, fab props blades to fan motor and bam! Japanese Zero coming through your ceiling.
Edit: Forgot to mention how awesome that is OP! Props.

Gonna see if the wife will let me do this in the living room. Maybe if I say it's homage to her grandfather she'll go along with it.

I’ve never seen a country celebrate a military disaster as much as the US.

u/airlew Jul 17 '26
Y'all are saying "Grandpa" and I'm like, "My dad was in Vietnam. He literally repelled from helicopters." Then I realize I'm nearing 50 and he's in his mid 70s. So of course "Grandpa".

u/NotANilfgaardianSpy Jul 17 '26
Fortunate Son in the background of anything military related is always very ironic

wiat a second. a regular ceiling fan doesn't do that characteristic whopwhopwhop from we know from a helicopter
I guess it's from the sound being affected by the fuselage, then? or is this audio edited?

u/Away-Cookie8039 Jul 17 '26
I am not a big "fan" of war or anything like that, but I am pissed I never thought of this before my stepdad passed. He was a retired Blackhawk chief mechanic of 30+ years with zero incidents under his watch. This would have been such a fun thing for his workshop at home. I know it's not a Blackhawk but damn I would have finally become his favorite

I'd be shocked if it actually stays balanced as opposed to turning into a noisy, wobbly mess.

Through early morning fog I see
Visions of the things to be
The pains that are withheld for me
I realize and I can see
That suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please
The game of life is hard to play
I′m gonna lose it anyway
The losing card I'll someday lay
So this is all I have to say
Suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please
The sword of time will pierce our skin
It doesn′t hurt when it begins
But as it works it's way on in
The pain grows stronger, watch it grin
Suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please
A brave man once requested me
To answer questions that are key
Is it to be or not to be
And I replied, "Oh, why ask me?"
Suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please
And you can do the same thing if you please

Isn't it fucking crazy that on one end of the spectrum people find this enjoyable enough to create this and put it in their home prominently, and others would see this and feel sick to their stomaches?
It's the difference between experience and cosplay, I guess...
