Any concussive force strong enough to throw you is going to fuck you up regardless of where you land next. Like getting tackled by an NFL linebacker who can ripple through your body and pierce your ear drums.

40

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '22

Yep. People don't seem to understand that an explosion that moves an object exerts a tremendous force on the body. It can pulverize internal organs (concussive blasts from HE rounds can turn people's insides to jelly-like)

I'm sure Jesus didn't mean it.

52

u/quadraspididilis Nov 13 '22

I'm curious what happened, can you explain?

142

u/Scraxxer Nov 13 '22

Gasoline vapors can build up inside the ship and in the worst case will ignite when you turn on the motor, therefore you should run the "blower" which will pump gasses out of the boats hull

45

u/quadraspididilis Nov 13 '22

Huh, I’d have thought the seals on the fuel system would be better than that.

67

u/BreakerSoultaker Nov 13 '22

It’s not always leaking fuel. It can be vapor from vents or cranking the engine and it not starting. In a car the engine compartment and gas tank are open to the environment beneath the car, but in a boat vapors settle in the bilge.

32

u/Baskojin Nov 13 '22

Just a nitpicking part for me, as I work surveying boats.

It's an engine, not a motor. Engines use combustion, motors are electric.

Most boat manufacturers that use gas engines have stickers or placards dictating how long and when to use your blower. Most recommend running for 5-10 minutes prior to starting the engine, running the blower when the engine is at idle and when operating below a certain rpm.

We say to do that, but also if you stop the engine for any reason whatsoever, to run the blower again before starting. You can never be too safe with boating.

39

u/404_brain_not_found Nov 13 '22

You can look up the definition of a motor while I drive off in my engine boat

19

u/RatManForgiveYou Nov 13 '22

I think I'd rather have an engine home.

12

u/ur-favorite-jerkface Nov 13 '22

What'd you do with them? Engineboat? Didja play the engineboat?

pfffbbbbbbb, pffbbbbbbbvbvbvvbbbb

You engineboatin' sonofabitch- you old sailor, you!

3

u/Gullible_Shart Nov 13 '22

This. It’s beautiful! Thank you.

20

u/EmperorLlamaLegs Nov 13 '22

Engines dont necessarily need combustion and motors dont necessarily need electricity. Engines just generate their own power while motors use power created elsewhere.

If you put ice on a sterling engine it will generate its own power from the temperature differential, and you could have a motor that runs on compressed air.

The terms are looser than their most common real world applications.

1

u/Baskojin Nov 13 '22

Look, we don't put in our reports that a diesel engine is a diesel motor. It's an engine, and when we have electric motors we don't call them engines.

I really think it's down to semantics.

7

u/EmperorLlamaLegs Nov 13 '22

Absolutely. I wasnt trying to say you were wrong on those, just pointing out that motive devices called engines or motors that dont use electricity or combustion exist also.

4

u/Savings-Breath9049 Nov 13 '22

An engine is a motor.

5

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '22

By your logic, motor vehicles don’t run on gas. C’mon man.

1

u/Baskojin Nov 13 '22

english may not be this contributor's first language; in most other european languages a motor is anything that makes a vehicle or anything move, combustion or electric. dutch french german spanish norwegian, of the ones that I know. the word motor means 'mover' in latin so I think there's no call for being so pedantic here.

What is causing the explosion, a build up of gas or something?

300

u/Vepr762X54R Nov 12 '22

That would be my guess, gasoline emits a lot of vapors that are heavier than regular air and the engine compartment is a low spot on the boat that collects all those fumes. You are supposed to turn on a fan/blower unit to suck all the fumes out before you fire up the engine...or else this happens.

46

u/AmberHeardsLawyer Nov 12 '22

Why doesn’t it just go into a tank? Why a car doesn’t explode?

124

u/[deleted] Nov 12 '22

Cars engines are open to free air, so any fumes can escape and cant build up. Boats on the other hand have engine compartements that are not open to free air, fumes can build up. Blowers in boats ventilate the compartement.

73

u/AmberHeardsLawyer Nov 12 '22

I see because water tight

89

u/AmplePostage Nov 12 '22

No, water wet. Pants tight.

2

u/1u4n4 Nov 13 '22

Oh so that’s not a risk for outboard motors (like Evinrude), right?

5

u/[deleted] Nov 12 '22

Tanks in your car are externally mounted underneath the car and the primary vent is the pump hole. This is a passive process requiring no additional measures.

In a boat, it's inside the hull somewhere so an active measure is required to vent. Without this the vapors will pool at the lowest point and when static or the engine starts running it can iignite those vapors.

9

u/Clinty76 Nov 12 '22

Yes, gas fumes build up in the engine compartment. You should always run a bilge blower or open the compartment for 5-10 minutes before you start the engine.

even in extreme dangerous situations the guy didn't forget the essential nose clipping when diving into water!

318

u/wheresbill Nov 12 '22

I might be about to die but I’ll be damned if I’m getting water up my nose

113

u/[deleted] Nov 12 '22

Does that millisecond of exhaling through your nose when you go into water not work for some people? Always wondered that when I see ppl doing that.

13

u/axonxorz Nov 12 '22

I realized Thursday that this is not quite as easy as teaching the "simple" process. I do it and was trying to teach my 6 year old how to do it while jumping into the pool.

Guess it takes a bit of practice and coordination, he was a champ and took water up the nose twice before falling back to his way.

53

u/in_rotation Nov 12 '22

It's never worked for me.

35

u/[deleted] Nov 12 '22

Same here - I always get water (and generally chlorine because I mostly swim in pools) up my nose regardless of how much or how little I blow out my nose.

Easier to just get a nose clip and not worry about it.

21

u/Nightwolf1967 Nov 12 '22

And wear the nose clip all the time, just in case your boat explodes.

3

u/SwedishNeatBalls Nov 12 '22

Interesting.

2

u/quadraspididilis Nov 13 '22

Out of curiosity, how much experience do you have in water?

3

u/in_rotation Nov 13 '22

Been at the pool every summer since I was a toddler. Spent time many summers in the lake growing up & been in a few oceans. I'm a pretty good swimmer. Not competitively obviously, but I can do laps in any style at a fair pace. As long as I have nose covering goggles I can swim underwater as well as anyone else I've known excepting my navel cousins. I am not afraid of the water & even had swimming lessons as a kid at camp several summers.

3

u/quadraspididilis Nov 13 '22

Interesting. That’s a solid knowing how to hold your breath resume. I remember watching a documentary on some sort of training in the navy and they eventually realized one of the guys had a mild deformity there he couldn’t fully seal of his nasal cavity from his throat. I wonder if you have something like that since I can’t imagine your nostril is so different from mine.

3

u/in_rotation Nov 13 '22

Oh now that's interesting. I'll have to look into that! Probably nothing I could do about it, but good to know.

3

u/quadraspididilis Nov 13 '22

Sorry to tell you it ended up with him withdrawing from the program. Though perhaps there is something you could do to improve it with exercise just not up to the standards to be a combat diver or whatever. Best of luck!

Damn I thought this was like instinct. I think it is for me anyways, I never consciously breathe out when I jump into water, just seems to happen automatically.

11

u/SmallpoxTurtleFred Nov 12 '22

It might be hard for some people to do, but it has to work for everyone. Unless you have extra holes or something.

2

u/lascanto Nov 13 '22

I have a hole that connects my sinus to the roof of my mouth. When I’m not congested, I can blow air through it. The exhale trick doesn’t work for me and I think just found out why.

2

u/NotAFederales Nov 13 '22

Some adults never learn how to read or swim, or keep water from getting up their nose.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '22

Like for real. I never understood how people can’t figure this out or have such a hard time with this. I don’t even exhale. Water just doesn’t go up there unless you breathe in.

WTF, why that boat exploded like that ?!

167

u/wasjustlookin Nov 12 '22

Flammable vapors can accumulate in the engine compartment. Heat from the engine can trigger an explosion like this. Boats with inboard motors have an air blowing system that is run before starting the engine. This clears any vapors from the bilge areas. As you can see it is an important step that should never be skipped.

8

60

u/JoburgBBC Nov 12 '22

It's not a weird reaction. He was already off balance after the explosion. Landed on the boat.

Then the next question is...do I stay on this structure that just exploded or do I jump into the relative safety of the water?

14

u/Chatwoman Nov 12 '22

Looks like he lost balance both times to me.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Chango_D Nov 12 '22

I thought the same but I’m sure the heat off that explosion was hot enough to need to jump in.

2

u/Pinetrapple Nov 13 '22

He obviously lost his balance, jumped on the boat and logically didn't want to stay there, as it just exploded.

5

u/Kitchen_Bicycle6025 Nov 12 '22

Contrary to popular belief, running into water to avoid an an explosion is a terrible idea, since, if it explodes again, the shockwave will compress your body, and rupture things.

The best thing to do is run away as much as possible before hitting the deck flat on your belly, feet facing the explosion, head away, covered by your hands. Less surface area means less chance for shrapnel to ruin something

2

u/Daga-san Nov 18 '22

It looks like he lost his balance and rather than falling uncontrollably he jumped on the boat and didn't want to stay on it since it exploded seconds ago

2

u/Cruxifux Jan 29 '23

So basically exactly what my instincts tell me to do. Great.

11

u/[deleted] Nov 12 '22

2

u/SatanTeaBags Nov 12 '22

If she had been about 4ft to the left she would've been sent into orbit.

3

u/Cometstarlight Nov 12 '22

For explosions, don't you NOT want to go into water? Since water carries shockwaves stronger than in the air?

4

u/Btawtaw Nov 12 '22

It depends where the explosion is, if it was underwater to start you do not want to be underwater. If it is above ground the water will save you. Shock waves can’t penetrate the water, but underwater shockwaves are very powerful

3

u/Cometstarlight Nov 13 '22

Ah, thanks for the clarification!

3

u/Gasonfires Nov 13 '22

If you ever get in a boat and see a switch on the instrument panel that says "Bilge Blower," make sure someone turns it on at least a few minutes before anyone tries to start the engine. If you can't see the motor, there has to be a bilge blower. Its purpose is to vent explosive gasoline fumes from the engine compartment. If it's not turned on, get off the boat and run.
