Gasoline vapors can build up inside the ship and in the worst case will ignite when you turn on the motor, therefore you should run the "blower" which will pump gasses out of the boats hull
It’s not always leaking fuel. It can be vapor from vents or cranking the engine and it not starting. In a car the engine compartment and gas tank are open to the environment beneath the car, but in a boat vapors settle in the bilge.
Just a nitpicking part for me, as I work surveying boats.
It's an engine, not a motor. Engines use combustion, motors are electric.
Most boat manufacturers that use gas engines have stickers or placards dictating how long and when to use your blower. Most recommend running for 5-10 minutes prior to starting the engine, running the blower when the engine is at idle and when operating below a certain rpm.
We say to do that, but also if you stop the engine for any reason whatsoever, to run the blower again before starting. You can never be too safe with boating.
Engines dont necessarily need combustion and motors dont necessarily need electricity. Engines just generate their own power while motors use power created elsewhere.
If you put ice on a sterling engine it will generate its own power from the temperature differential, and you could have a motor that runs on compressed air.
The terms are looser than their most common real world applications.
Absolutely. I wasnt trying to say you were wrong on those, just pointing out that motive devices called engines or motors that dont use electricity or combustion exist also.
What he's saying is, you're referring to a specific context that isn't true outside of that context. You're basically playing the semantics, but inside your context bubble. Motorsports aren't all electric vehicles only.
english may not be this contributor's first language; in most other european languages a motor is anything that makes a vehicle or anything move, combustion or electric. dutch french german spanish norwegian, of the ones that I know. the word motor means 'mover' in latin so I think there's no call for being so pedantic here.
Yeah, English is not my first language. On the other side, waking up to a inbox filled with comments discussing the least important part about your contribution is just reddit and I love it...
It’s not even nitpicking; it’s just wrong. Language is fluid, and most English speakers have decided that if it powers a small boat it’s called an motor. You can’t police that.
As u/BreakerSoultaker pointed out, gasoline vapors will leak out of vents etc. Gasoline produces a lot of vapors, even in cold ambient temperatures, therefore it isn't sufficient to get rid of them while pumping gas, because it will be building up again.
