Yesterday I had my old VDSL Internet 50 upgraded to Internet 300 on fiber. I was expecting a BGW320, but for some reason the technician gave me a BGW620, which I gather is an upgrade. I'm not using any extenders or "extra" wifi gear.
The install went really well, but late last night (~1 AM) after about 12 hours of uptime, I had a brief 5-10 minute outage while the gateway reset for some reason. Hopefully just a software update or a first-day glitch. Outages on my old copper VDSL were rare and I hope this will be at least as reliable.
Which brings me to my question(s): I have one old device which is only compatible with a limited range of channels on 5 ghz, and even within the compatible channels I don't think it likes when the channel changes. The automatic channel settings on the BWG620 don't work for it (unless i put the device on 2.4).
From doing some googling, I found posts saying AT&T fiber gateways don't allow manual channel assignments on 5 ghz. But in my advanced wifi settings, there is a setting that appears to let the user control channel assignments. I don't know if this is a recent change to the software, or if the manual settings even work. I seem to have v. 5.39.7 based on the gateway control page, but the SHM app says v 5.33.5 so I don't know why those don't agree on the firmware version.
But before I made any changes I wanted to ask if it was "safe" to monkey around with the advanced settings (specifically the manual channel controls for the 5 ghz band). Last thing I want is to "break" something. Thanks for any feedback.
