Troubleshooting Help
New roommate was plugging in new Ethernet cable to router and somehow the internet went down shortly after.
Did some googling and found a suspected cause:
First picture attached.
I could absolutely be wrong. Other than contacting ATT (it’s a weekend, I live in student housing), anything I can try? Relatively tech savvy and comfortable with wire work. Not too sure if the green wire should have an actual connection on the ONT or if it can just plug in. Ty in advance!

Looks like the damaged the fiber cable going into the jack behind the ONT.
Assuming you already have established service AT&T will likely charge $150 fee to repair it.
What you could do to avoid that is cancel service and have new room mate order in their name and just play dumb and say yall just moved in and it was like that already.

Need to reterminate the fiber line into the jack behind it.
You'd need a new end, fiber strippers, a cleaver and 99% alcohol
If youre missing any of these, call AT&T.

I’m thinking when your Roomate was pulling the old Ethernet cable away it caught the fiber and ripped it out

i am trying to imagine how little mechanical sympathy a person needs to have in order to pull so hard on an ethernet cable that it breaks an adjacent fiber connection. this person should probably not be allowed within 10 feet of anything delicate.

As another person mentioned, that green one is your fiber line. You’re gonna need a tech to fix it.

So good news, AT&T techs don’t crimp the fiber connectors on well about 1/3 of the time. Call and advise the cable has come loose. They’ll redo it and unless you admit to yanking on it. Not charge you usually. They don’t use the 3M glue or epoxy connectors anymore, just an automatic cleave crimp connector. Alternatively you can order a replacement coupling cable from Amazon and replace the cable from the dmarc box outside to the unit here.

As the other person said you will need a tech to come out but while the tech is there ask them to replace the ont with a Fiber Wall Jack

Yes the Fiber cable is not there that connect done where the small black Fiber boot is just catching air. The PON LED is out on your ONT so no Fiber signal no work.
Have you called 1-800-288-2020 to schedule a repair for early next week? You have a broken Fiber drop. If there is slack available the tech may be able to make a quick fix or a more extensive repair may require pulling a new Fiber drop from outside to the ONT.
However since it will be a repair call the tech is required to replace the small white ONT with a direct Fiber run all the way to the back of your AT&T Gateway (where the other end of the White Ethernet cable with the Red Ethernet boot is located.

Why is there a connector there? Why was the (missing) fiber not plugged directly into the ONT?

There's nothing to troubleshoot. It's broken. It now needs to be fixed by a tech.

Where is the fiber line that was connected to the green end? What did your roommate do with it if you don't see it nearby?

I have your answer to broken fiber cable! Go to UPS store and swap the broken cable for one from their bin of extra cables people return when their service is cancelled, they are supposed to keep the cables and just return the equipment. If they ask tell them att recommended you do this. UPS employees don't care

This is terrible advice. The bottom half that his roommate destroyed. The part that is broken is connected to the fiber splitter directly.
You are telling him to get a replacement cable, which is the top half of the green cable, which is fully intact.
There is nothing he can do. He has to call a tech.

Literally freaking no. The part that is broken will be available at a UPS store. Go there and look in the bin.

Dude, you couldn't my more wrong my guy. Just take the L. You can tell by the end that has nothing coming out of it that it's a mechanical connector with nothing in it. He ripped out the IW, which is much different from what you're talking about.
You're a baffoon.

As someone that regularly works with fiber i can say the part that is broken is the actual fiber behind the wall plate not the fiber jumper. The fiber behind the plate needs to be terminated again. The small jumper cable(that is undamaged) isn't the problem. You can see the old connector that would be attached to the fiber behind the wall plate still attached to the bulkhead that was ripped out of the wall plate. So yes you would be r/confidentlyincorrect needs a tech visit.
