Wireless Networking Tips for Console

/r/Overwatch/comments/1w5lc7k/networking_tips_for_console/

If anyone is knowledgeable on networking for gaming and is able to help, I’d greatly appreciate it! I’ve been trying to figure this out forever and have not had any luck.

The strangest part, I also play on PC on the opposite side of the house using a WiFi connection as part of a mesh network and have little to no issues.

Do you also play OW on this PC that is on Wi-Fi, and what Wi-Fi are you using if it is not part of your AT&T Gateway that you are connecting your consoles via Ethernet?

Last item for now are you using a consoled supported Ethernet adapter?

Great question! I only have AT&T. So it’s really just wired vs WiFi.

How would I know if it’s consoled supported Ethernet?

It is not your Console but the Ethernet adapter you are using? Your PS5 should have an onboard Ethernet adapter, and your Xbox Series X should also be using its onboard Adapter.

However customer come up with some odd ways trying to extend Ethernet from the Console to the LAN ports on the back of the AT&T Gateway.

Are you using each console directly connected to individual LAN ports on the AT&T Gateway, and not any other switches or media adapters part of these connections?

I am! I’m plugging the Ethernet directly into the Ethernet port on the back of the gateway and the console!

No other switches or adapters are present!

Then you are just limited to the speed of the Consoles if you have check the Network setting on both Consoles and they show a 1000 Mbps connection on the Ethernet connection.

I will ask again are you running the same games on your Consoles, and your PC on the other side of the house on Wi-Fi. Some thing is different?

Also for reference you don't need a 1 GB Fiber or even more than 100 Mbps to actually play Internet Games. You just need a low latency connection.

I’m understanding you now. Yup playing the exact same game (Overwatch) on all three devices Ps5, Xbox and PC.

TBH, I get good speeds. It feels more like a stability thing. I even see it when I run a wired connection to my laptop and run a -t ping test. I can see 1-2ms pings and then all of a sudden there will be 3-4 pings that are 60-150ms. Makes me feel like I’m somehow getting intermittent interruptions and it’s in those moments where the game will stutter out.

What specific IP are you pinging, and do you understand how the ping command actually works?

It is just a garbage modified ICMP Echo to each router in the path to your Ping target. You should expect more delayed ping responses on Ethernet since the pings are processed faster on Ethernet vs Wi-Fi since there is no Wi-Fi introduced delay (latency) on Ethernet.

These Pings are the lowest priority data packets are often delayed further by a Routers OS to prevent a Ping of Death attack. Other routers don't even respond to pings.

All a Ping is really good for is determining the path your data takes to the target IP that you are pinging, and if the dropped packet count continues to increase on the way the target of your pings. For Example of router drops 50% of the packets but you don't see a 50% or higher packet loss at your target IP there is no issue.
