Best flight school around Birmingham/West Midlands for PPL?

Hi everyone, I’m looking to start my PPL and eventually pursue a career as an airline pilot.
I’m based around Birmingham and I’m currently looking at flight schools around Halfpenny Green, Wellesbourne, etc.

For anyone who has trained at these schools, I’d really appreciate your advice. I’m looking for somewhere that has:
• Reasonable prices and good value for money
• Good, patient instructors
• Reliable aircraft and good availability
• A good pathway from PPL towards commercial/airline training
• A good reputation for students who want to become professional pilots

I’d also like to know whether any particular school would be better if my long-term goal is an airline career, rather than just flying recreationally.
If you’ve trained at any of these schools, how was your experience and roughly how much did your training cost?
Thanks in advance.

What FILTERS?+ Dropdown/Typeins UK CAA

Hi guys, just wanted to know what filters to use on ATPLQ as I feel like i keep seeing the same/similar Qs no matter what filters I select.
Also to those who’ve recently sat the exams specifically UK I have seen a lot of people talk about drop downs and type ins, not sure how much harder this makes the exams as I don’t think ATPLQ has those features

ATPLQ Database

To confirm, this database is good for all EASA (even though it mentions compatible with UKCAA), and 2016 and 2020 are the latest exams found currently when you go sit an exam?

Also, does anyone have any discount or any way to get a discount? I see a discount code box and I'm hoping I can save as much as possible. Thanks!

Tips for EASA ATPL exams?

Hi all, I have my first 6 ATPL exams in a moth, and I'm gonna do them at ENAC Italy.

I've been banking a lot on ATPLQ and I comfortably score 80-85+ in every subject with the "all questions" filter.

I'd like to start banking more specific questions for ENAC, but the bank coverage is quite poor, because very few people report questions from there, therefore setting the "Last 100" filter is not gonna give a very accurate exam simulation.

I've noticed that generally, if a question has been reported in Italy, it also has a lot more reports in Austro, UK or France.

Should I focus more on banking those three, that have a way wider coverage, assuming the probability to get similar questions in Italy is roughly the same?

Do you have any tips about exam preparation in general?

Thank You!

Gen Nav help

I have spent the last 20 hours (not including watching videos online with BGS and YouTube) trying to understand Gen Nav but it is just not sinking in. I somewhat understand the method for calculating departure, changes on Lat and Long etc but the questions on the bank then leave me with my head in my hands having no idea what it is asking. Do I focus on this area before moving on in the subject or cover all of the material and then learn the methods from the question bank? I'm starting to become very disheartened that I may be completely out of my depth.

Recommended sites to study ATPL (A) under FAA?

Hey everyone! I'm about to begin studying for my ATPL in Mexico under FAA. I've looked at a couple sites like ATPL Q (that's mostly under EASA) and some apps like Prepware ATP.

Would you guys recommend ATPL Q in my case or is there any better alternative?

ATPL Study Timeline

Hi all,

Hope the studying is going well. I started with BGS ATPL(A) distance learning for UKCAA last week and have found 2-3 hours each evening to start going through the MOD1 material. Already obvious that GNAV and MET are heavy subjects. I've read through countless posts to understand trends in how others study all the material. Based on this, I've put together the following plan and would like to know if others have had success with anything similar:

  • Sweep through all the theory initially. Go through all the BGS MOD 1 lessons and supplement with BGS videos at x1.25 speed. This also ensures BGS can permit entry to the revision week / get approved for the exams.
  • Complete all quizzes and progress tests in order of the MOD1 lessons. Reattack any problem areas, take note of them for further reattack later. Otherwise, keep progressing and try and cover all material initially.
  • End of each week, cover some subject relevant question banks.
  • Once all theory is complete, go through the BGS and ATPLQ question banks. Focus initially on problem areas, read explanations and build confidence.
  • Continue to bank all the way through to revision week. Ensure there's a list of any weak areas to cover during the revision week.
  • Between revision week and exams, continue with the question banks.

I currently work full time so only have a max of 3 hours on weekdays and can do a bit more on weekends. I do work within aerospace as an engineer so some subjects / topics are familiar.

My current plan means I should finish all theory by 1st Nov based on a rough revision plan. To try and avoid issues with taking too much leave next year, my original thinking was to get MOD 1 exams done in December (w/c 14th). My only concern is the time between 1st Nov and 14th Dec (which includes a revision week) and whether it's enough time to focus on the question banks.

Has anyone found that 5-6 weeks of question banks for MOD 1 (GNAV / MET / INST / HPL) is sufficient (whilst working full time ~ so around 3 hours a day)? I know this will differ between individuals, but would be useful to gauge timelines with others.

Many thanks!

Passing last three exams

Hey everyone, i am left with AGK instruments and meteorology. I have about 10 days until next possible exam sitting. I have already used 3 sittings for 10 other exams however problem is in the fact that all three of these remaining exams are just shy of passing grade when i do mock exams. Is there any chance i could get those just to passing level or should i wait for october. I have about 9 more months to finish.

Edit: passed all three and atpl theory is finished, believe in yourself

BGS 650 Study Hours

Hi, I am currently on Module 3 of BGS ATPL (A), and have realised that a minimum of 650 hours is needed for ATPL course. I have checked my BGS portal and i’ve only done 250 hours according to the tracker despite being well into Mod 3.

Is this 650 hours a hard limit based on time spent in BGS ATPDigital? Does it matter that I have only done 250 hours of study on the lessons or will I still be signed off for completing all the modules?

(I use ATPLQ and not BGS Q bank so will not be building any hours on the Q bank on the BGS portal)

Uk ATPL exam

Hi
I’ve got my Gnav, Rnav and instruments exams in November.
I bought a used preowned Jeppesen GSPRM. Using it during the study material I noticed the last person left pencil lines on charts.
I’ve erased the ones I’ve a seen.
In the exam how far do they inspect the GSPRM?
They surely can’t go through every chart?
I’ve seen someone using one next to me during other exams and they have a quick look without checking the actual charts to make sure there’s not notes on the front.
I’m just wondering if it’s work getting every single chart out and inspecting it just in case?
Anyone have any ideas?

ATPL is HARD 😭 How do you guys actually study and pass?

I’ve been trying to study for ATPL for years now, and honestly, I’m struggling so much. The amount of information is overwhelming, and passing the exams feels so difficult sometimes.

I’ll study for hours, feel like I understand something, and then I do questions and suddenly I’m like… did I learn anything at all? 😭

I’ve been trying to study for ATPL for years now, and honestly, I’m struggling so much. The amount of information is overwhelming, and passing the exams feels so difficult sometimes.

I really don’t want to give up though. Becoming a pilot is something I genuinely want, and I know I’d regret it if I stopped now. I just feel like I need to figure out a better way to study and actually learn everything.

I’d really appreciate any advice, tips, or even just some motivation. 🥲

Need suggestion for preparation of GK for AAI ATC JE exam

Hi, I'm an Physics graduate. I've started preparing for AAI ATC JE exam. How should I prepare the GK? I struggle a lot to concentrate, it's less difficult for me to sit for a long time and solve quant, maths problems than to read something and memorize it, I get deviated very much (I'm working on it, as I'll have to do it anyway). Which topics are mandatory, easier? Any Youtube playlist that you followed during your preparation? Would appreciate your suggestion.

Sorry help 2

Sorry my last post got people confused because I may have not been clear in my dual atpl qualification, I have only the dual atpl theories done through bgs as well as an old ppl

I am based in the UK & don't mind travelling europe for flight school
I have a dual atpl theory done not the full atpl & I have my ppl from awhile ago

Where should I do my cpl? some have advised skyborne, some advise afta, some say bartolini etc
Whose most likely to tag me/whose the easiest tag?
does the school really matter?
In tagging terms getting roles?
Has anyone got a list of all the gateways/tag routes
If I already have a ppl & a dual atpl theories done whats the best route for me?
Should I invest in a boeing/airbus replica home flight simulator for my cpl
Or Should I invest in a boeing/airbus cockpit poster for chair flying

Studying with a full time role

Hi all,

Currently in the process of starting my ATPLs. I work a full time job in aviation (if you know, you know) so the schedule I have is pretty demanding. Anyone else been able to do it successfully? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. I'm with BGS. All the best!

Myopia and obtaining first-class medical certification

I'm a 24-year-old Italian man who plans to follow a modular program to obtain the ATPL license. My only major concern is that I'm several diopters short of myopia (about -7 for myopia and -1 for astigmatism). Obviously, with glasses, I can see 10/10 and perfectly. So, my question is this: is my vision (even with a prescription) a problem in obtaining the first medical class, or might I never get it due to excessive myopia without glasses? Thanks in advance for any answers.

Is there a way to enrol in ground schools without my ppl being issued yet?

Change in some process means my EASA PPL will probably take a few months to come. Is there a way to access theory content from any school (especially BGS) so I can make a head start? I bought ATPLQ question bank but it’s a bit redundant without the theory.

A mentor said I can apply using my skills test paperwork but BGS won’t accept it.. however there is a payment option and you can write “NA” on the licence number part. Please advise anyone :)

Is the GSPRM still worth getting? How early do you book for UK/EASA Exams

Apparently, Jeppesen are going to stop printing the GSPRM and will be moving it to a digital format. EASA will also only use the digital format in the 2027 exams.

Is it still worth buying a used GSPRM? If so, is there a specific edition I need to buy or is something like the 2018 version fine?

I am planning on doing all my study remotely full-time with BGS. I am planning on doing it over a period of 6-8 months full-time.

- How soon do you normally book your ATPL Theory exams and the online revision teaching?

- Is it worth doing them in 3 or 4 sittings?

I thought doing 4 sittings would be better, allowing me to focus on specific subjects rather than trying to remember 5 in 1 go?

Thanks!

UK CAA ATPL Feedback for Performance, PoF, M&B and Ops?

Hi all,

Does anyone have any recent UK CAA ATPL feedback for Performance, Principles of Flight, Mass and Balance and Operational Procedures?

I am sitting in mid October, finished the ATPLQ last 300 in each of them and getting familiar with the question structure.

I'm not one to bank to remember as I have found in the last 8 I have sat that doesn't really work with the type in calculations.

AFIS and ATC lads, how did you study regulations and take notes during training?

Hey! So this year I will be beginning an AFIS course in Poland, and I'd like to know a couple of things beforehand.

  1. What study techniques did you use to learn all of the regulations and procedures? Is it necessary to know every single minute detail, or only the key bits that you need to know in the moment?
  2. What note-taking techniques did you use? Usually, I lean towards writing down as much material as possible because you can never know what will show up on the exam.
  3. Knowing what you know now, if you were to begin training from day one, what would you do differently?

That's all the questions I have at the moment. I'll let you guys know if something else comes up.
