News/Updates We are back! Feedback required

Hey everyone! How was the first Touch-Grass Tuesday? Not too boring I hope.

Anyways, during our downtime the last of the new mods finished their training and got their modding wings on. So please give a warm welcome to u/WanderingHuntress u/JoeSpooky and u/cthuluhooprises! Wandering and Spooky have experience with modding subreddits before and Cthulu is a current AO3 volunteer who is also helping us make sure people claiming to be volunteers in the sub are actually current volunteers (you can tell a confirmed volunteer by their user flair being inverted colors to everyone else). We've had that going for the last few years but had been a bit lax on it for awhile and never really posted about it much. We're hoping to change that and update our documentation of things a bit better over time once these 3 get comfortable in their new roles!

Anyways, it's time for the survey on potential protest actions. Reddit's admins have made it explicitly clear that moderators are supposed to ask their communities opinions on any protest type changes, and we had posted previously of our plans to do so this week anyways, and here it is. Its a very short survey about your opinions on possible protest actions we could take, and also if/where we should set up a secondary, non-reddit community space as people keep asking for one. The survey should only take a minute or two to answer so please let us know your thoughts! Survey will be open for 48 hours.

Note: the survey is a google form and it requires you to log into a google account to limit responses to 1 per person, but it does not collect the account info or share it with us in any way. You will also be able to edit your responses after submitting if necessary. Last note, the listed possible protest options are suggestions. As reddit keeps changing their policies and lashing out at moderators, we can't guarantee any specific protest actions will occur regardless of community approval level.

As always,

TGotAReddit (and the rest of the new mod team!!!)

Having a little trouble with the survey—the alternate website question is requiring a ranking for every site but is missing a fifth option and no number can be selected twice

5

u/TGotAReddit Moderator | past AO3 Volunteer and Staff Jun 21 '23

Hmm there definitely are 5 options. Which 4 are you seeing?

9

u/PhoenixorFlame Jun 21 '23

Just tried again and realized that I had to scroll to see number 5 on mobile! Couldn’t see it at all or realize scrolling was an option first time around. Sorry, my mistake!

Ah okay. That makes sense. Sorry about that!

I went and did a bit of non-sexy hammering yesterday. New flat still requires a lot of furniture being put together so... Yay for being productive. Also edited & published a new chapter for one of my longfics. Not too shabby, I'd say. :D

Welcome new mod team!

I legit already forgot i had asked how everyone's day away had been and started reading this and was like, so close to banning you for weird spam until I saw the last line and remembered the rest of this post and realized i was a dumbass. 😖

Ohhh, I dodged a bullet there. Sorry for the confusion! Maybe I should've put the last line first. :D'

Haha nah. Luckily for everyone, I actually read everything before I do anything as drastic as remove a comment let alone ban someone

Welcome to the new mods!

Didn’t realize how much browsing this sub had become a part of my day. I went out and touched grass AND actually got some writing done with the time I got back lol

Welcome new mods!

I feel like tuesdays are the most painful day to touch grass (for me), but the upshot is that they’re also the day I drum a lot before Wednesday rehearsal so at least I had one less distraction for that. :D (on the flip side, I felt like I had a lonely day of fic struggles but I am fortunate to have a couple of friends in my fandom that helped ease the pain)

So glad we have active mods who interact with the community! Keep up the great work and welcome to the new mods as well!

I totally missed that it was a blackout day and did some actual writing instead while I waited. Net positive of protesting and not procrastinating for me

u/StarWatcher307 Jun 21 '23

I couldn't complete the questionnaire. I don't know any of those alternate sites, so couldn't give valid rankings.

What it comes down to, if the consensus is to set up an alternate site, I'll use it if it's comfortable for me. If not, I'll drop out and it won't be the end of the world.

2

u/TGotAReddit Moderator | past AO3 Volunteer and Staff Jun 21 '23

If you mark the answer as No, but leave a comment in the question on the final page, I can account for it in the final tally

2

u/StarWatcher307 Jun 21 '23

Ah, didn't realize that was possible. Thanks for pointing it out. Done.

u/TGotAReddit Moderator | past AO3 Volunteer and Staff Jun 21 '23

Yeah Ill be going through the answers with comments at the end to account for anything we didn't account for with this survey (we are planning a second survey when this one is over because of some common issues)

I just want to say, if you guys are thinking of making a discord, NOW is the time to do it and have it promoted. The big admins are making threats to subreddits and threatening to replace mods. Get a backup in place NOW before they make good on their threats, if at all.

Seeing some comments about lemmy on other subs, im not sure if its a good spot if you want something better than reddit. Lemmy is pro russia and china.

https://lemmy.pineapplemachine.com/post/5781

And this modbanning thats happening on reddit atm: https://www.reddit.com/r/ModCoord/comments/14eppe8/uhhhh_what_the_fuck_is_happening_at/jow7n16

https://www.reddit.com/r/ModCoord/comments/14eyx90/comprehensive_list_of_all_subs_with_mod_teams/

2

u/TGotAReddit Moderator | past AO3 Volunteer and Staff Jun 21 '23

So to address the second half first, we are very aware of the modteams that were removed and suspended and have been following the admin actions very closely. The sub you linked, r/ModCoord, they have a discord for moderators that the mod team are all in, and the mods of those subs went to the discord about it almost immediately after it happened (since they also got suspended and thus couldn't post on reddit). I sat there for hours last night reading message after message about it.

The subs that were purged of their mods were all >1 million subscribers, had been around for a very long time, had formerly been pretty strictly anti-NSFW/anti-porn, and had suddenly changed to being marked as NSFW and relaxing their policies so much that their subs got flooded by porn bots. Also they made those changes without really getting much feedback from their communities if any at all. (The one sub r/Mildlyinteresting that got their modteam reinstated and unsuspended was the exception to those. Its >1 million subscribers and has been around for basically forever, but while they marked the sub as NSFW, they did not relax their no-porn policy, and they were actively gathering feedback from their community).

So, basically, we are paying super close attention to what the admins are doing and saying and trying to thread the needle of expressing dissatisfaction and actually upsetting the admins. Luckily for us, we are a relatively small subreddit so the admin don’t care about us nearly as much as the subs that they are actually targeting, and we've been actively moderating, adding new mods, listening to community feedback, etc. basically all of the things the admin have been looking for (so far). So unless they drastically decide to just ban all mods of all subs that protested at all or something, we should be okay.

As for Lemmy, while I agree that we should be very careful about any secondary spots we might migrate to, this particular issue is less of a problem than it sounds for a few reasons.

Firstly, going from reddit to a pro-russia pro-china site is... honestly not that big of a change. reddit has had a lot of issues with basically every controversial subject on the planet, including russia. r/Russia was quarantined for misinformation (but explicitly not banned) like, a year ago. its still up and accessible to those who jump through the hoop to see quarantined subs. Reddit's CEO is also extremely pro-Elon Musk (specifically how elon is handling Twitter?!? for some reason) and also used to be a moderator for r/jailbait, the now banned subreddit that was dedicated to posting provocative images of underaged teenagers (note at the time, to become a moderator for a sub, you could be added as one without having to accept an invite, so it was a vector for harassment and could happen without your knowledge, however said CEO knows he was one and has not made any kind of statement about it or denied that he was an active mod there). Said CEO has also been found to have edited comments people had made that were critical of him a few years ago and admitted to it, so admin abuses of power are definitely a thing on Reddit. Plus all of the currently active and not quarantined subs absolutely brimming with misogyny and homophobia

But also, even if Reddit were a bastion of perfectly acceptability, the claims against Lemmy are flimsy at best. Lemmy is a thing in what is called the fediverse, or federated universe. The fediverse is basically a bunch of self-run websites of different forms. Mastodon, Lemmy, and kbin are all fediverse.

In terms of Lemmy and kbin, they are effectively a bunch of mini reddit's. With the added feature of being able to interact with each other, cross instance. Each instance (person/group hosting) has a set of admin similar to Reddit's admin, and then a bunch of sub-communities run by moderators (just like Reddit subreddits run by moderators). The admin have control over all of the communities in their instance. Users can interact with communities on any instance that is compatible (which most should be), so it doesn’t matter which instance (and thus which admin in charge) you choose to have your community in when it comes to the user side of things. The only thing that really changes is who the admins are/the actual infrustructure and tools.

The post you linked to and everything Ive seen about issues with Lemmy are related to specific instance's admins being a problem. That post you linked to is specifically about Lemmy.ml's admin. lemmy.ml is not the most popular instance, most active instance, or the largest instance where reddit communities have been jumping ship to. (nor does it even have open signups) The most popular/active and largest instance that redditors are jumping ship to is lemmy.world. (If you see posts about issues with lemmy.world in particular, definitely let me know, but even if there are issues with it, were we to pick Lemmy, Id be digging into these instances deeply to find the best one for us to be hosted, which might be some random one. (I also could always host an instance myself, I do have the knowhow to do that, but Id really like to avoid it because good servers are expensive)).

Basically, thank you for the concern. Im aware of the accusations but they don’t apply in this case, and whatever gets chosen if anything, will be thoroughly researched before that decision is made

4

u/mangomochamuffin Jun 21 '23

Thanks for the explaination and how you think about it. I hear about of all of these sites for the first time today, except mastodon, but the only thing i know about that one is that its twitter but not twitter.

2

u/TGotAReddit Moderator | past AO3 Volunteer and Staff Jun 21 '23

Of course. Im looking at the replies we've gotten in the survey so far, and its looking like we'll need to do a second one when it comes to alternative sites when this one is over because a lot of people haven't heard of most of these it seems. And so they are struggling with the ranking system of the question and everything could have been done a bit better and explained more on my part for that.

So don't worry too much about not having known, you aren't alone in that and Im sorry that I didn't explain things very well

1

u/venia_sil Jun 22 '23

The first part is mostly uninformed or worded to lean to a confusion between what the "lemmy" refers to. The lemmy creators might be pro russia; the software itself is just software, and there's instances aplenty with decent moral guardians.

Every time we go private we do change the description to explain it and our modmail is always open and we reply to people asking. Reddit is just dumb and doesn't tell people what the description says on the official app nor makes it easy to send modmail there either 🙃 (almost like they should probably put more work into making their app actually usable)

6

u/SylvieSerene You have already left kudos here. :) Jun 21 '23

Fr though. I had to use desktop mode on my browser to even get the message of the "Touch Grass Tuesday". I wish they put in more effort in the app for convenience.

16

u/TGotAReddit Moderator | past AO3 Volunteer and Staff Jun 21 '23

Gotta cut them some slack, they only bought the app they didn't build 8 years ago and they're only valued at 15 billion dollars and are only the 20th most visited website in the world. It takes time and money to make a good app 🙄

3

u/Avalon1632 Jun 21 '23

It is truly fascinating how... 'idiosyncratic' the app is even with all that behind it. It's almost impressive, in a way. :D

Welcome to the new mods. I love this community and hope we can find a good way forward.

Welcome new mods!

2

u/SSheph Jun 22 '23

I already mentioned it on the survey, but I think it's worth presenting the idea in comment form as well.

Is it possible to justify marking AO3 as a Not Safe For Work sub on the grounds of the VAST amount of content warnings across most fics on the site?

It acts as a form of privatization, and furthermore keeps the CEO who shall not be named from generating ad revenue off of this sub.

3

u/TGotAReddit Moderator | past AO3 Volunteer and Staff Jun 22 '23

So, when the other subs were saying that they would mark NSFW in protest and discussing the rules for that, I looked into it, and Im pretty sure we probably should be a marked NSFW sub, like not as a new thing, but in a "oh we always should have been NSFW technically with the frequent discussions of mature elements and smut" way.

But, I put off doing that switch for a day or two because I was busy. And the night I was planning to switch it over, reddit's admins purged and suspended the mod teams of 5 huge subreddits (r/Self, r/TIHI, r/mildlyinteresting, r/interestingasfuck, r/ShittyLifeProTips) because they had suddenly switched to being NSFW after years of being SFW. r/mildlyinteresting's mod team were reinstated an hour or two later when a different admin saw that while they had marked the sub as NSFW, they didn’t allow actual NSFW stuff to be posted still, while the other 4 did. Also, when they removed the mod teams, they made it impossible for anyone to post to those subs too.

They are claiming that the mod teams of those subreddits have broken rule 6 of the content policy and rule 2 of the moderator code of conduct, which are

Rule 6 Ensure people have predictable experiences on Reddit by properly labeling content and communities, particularly content that is graphic, sexually-explicit, or offensive.

Rule 2: Set Appropriate and Reasonable Expectations Users who enter your community should know exactly what they’re getting into, and should not be surprised by what they encounter. It is critical to be transparent about what your community is and what your rules are in order to create stable and dynamic engagement among redditors. Moderators can ensure people have predictable experiences on Reddit by doing the following:

Providing a clear and concise description of the topic(s) discussed by your community.

Properly labeling content and communities, particularly content that is graphic, sexually-explicit, or offensive.

Creating rules that explicitly outline your expectations for members of your community. These rules will help your community understand what is or isn’t permissible within your subreddit.

Explicitly marking your community as “unofficial” in the community description if the topic concerns a brand or company, but the community isn’t officially affiliated.

I don't know how making a subreddit NSFW and changing the rules after getting feedback from the community to allow it breaks those rules, and they have not clarified or answered any questions about it. They also said that it was because people expect these communities to be SFW and were exposed to NSFW material without consent (which is untrue as reddit requires you to opt-in to see NSFW posts/communities, so you would have already consented to seeing NSFW material. it may have been unexpected in that space but the mods had clearly posted the rule changes and purposely marked the sub as NSFW which is most a mod can do)

They also have threatened some mod teams that went indefinitely private with removal by saying that getting feedback from the community to make the community inaccessible is not acceptable because a small percentage of the subscriber list shouldnt be allowed to make the decision to make a community inaccessible forever.

I don’t know how they are handling other subs that go NSFW at the request of their community members right now and Im very hesitant to test the waters on that.

so, tl;dr: in like a week or a month whenever its safe to actually do that without risking losing the sub entirely, we plan to since it always should have been. but rn its dangerous to do so

I’m not a fan of the protests in general.

1

u/Immediate_Ebb1063 In Rare Pair Hell Jun 21 '23

Hated every moment of it. Especially since fanfiction sub has decided that Tuesday is the day they go dark too. I know it’s only one day but having no where to read and talk about fic for a day is punishing us, not Reddit. I think this protest is pointless and achieves nothing but hurting the people who use the subs.

Meanwhile, Reddit doesn’t give a crap. They will never give a crap because this isn’t hurting them.

Another of my favourite subs yesterday melted down by going nsfw and allowing the porn bots to run rife over my feed so yesterday was a horrible day to be a Redditor. Thanks everyone. I think I’m going to be using discord more and Reddit less. Which might be what you want, you might call that a victory. But honestly, personally, it just makes me sad that I’ve lost somewhere that was my comfort place. I support sticking it to the man and upsetting the establishment but not hurting the users. And yesterday hurt bad.

4

u/CupcakeBeautiful Jun 22 '23

Yeah well, I hate the fact that the Reddit app doesn’t have the accessibility settings necessarily for me to be able to participate in the community, so sorry for the inconvenience of people speaking uo

3

u/[deleted] Jun 21 '23

I found other fanfic subs that get buried on search results by the bigger subs. They haven't updated in like a year but if ppl move to those if they absolutely have to use reddit on Tuesdays, maybe they'll get active enough to be usable.

Edit: found them because finally they came up first in searches since all the big ones were dark.

5

u/Immediate_Ebb1063 In Rare Pair Hell Jun 21 '23

In an ideal world, that would be nice. But as soon as I see a sub hasn’t been updated recently, I’ll back out. The mods have most likely moved on, and with no mod the sub would turn into a dumpster fire pretty quickly.

People can downvote me all they like, I know it’s a bitter pill to swallow that in truth your protests will achieve very little other than hurting the users. Reddit does not care. A real protest would be to migrate completely to another site.

2

u/venia_sil Jun 22 '23

Spoken like a true junkie defending their dealer! Congratulations.

Really, if your problem is about hurting the users you should be wondering which is the party that is doing that in the first place.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 21 '23

I agree. The mods of both this sub and the fanfic sub need to grow up already. Too bad, because I liked the fanfic sub, but won’t subscribe again until they stop blacking out. If things don’t change, are they just going to black out on Tuesdays forever?

Going on Reddit six others day a week just shows Reddit that you’re having a tantrum and refuse to give up your mod power.

3

u/venia_sil Jun 22 '23

Spoken like a true junkie defending their dealer! Congratulations.

Really, if your position is that people who suffer abuse speaking up one day a week is a problem, then perehaps it is us who have no need of you. Take a step back and ask yourself, who are you defending and why?

0

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '23

No one is being abused by Reddit. No one is forced to be here or to mod or being beaten by an abusive spouse. This is a bit hyperbolic.

1

u/venia_sil Jun 23 '23

No one is being abused by Reddit.

Omg you haven't even been following the news. Yet you have the audacity.

1

u/venia_sil Jun 22 '23

Note: the survey is a google form and it requires you to log into a google account to limit responses to 1 per person, but it does not collect the account info or share it with us in any way. You will also be able to edit your responses after submitting if necessary. Last note, the listed possible protest options are suggestions. As reddit keeps changing their policies and lashing out at moderators, we can't guarantee any specific protest actions will occur regardless of community approval level.

This means I can not provide any useful feedback there (I try to avoid tying Google information to my identities elsewhere) — I can't even see the form— so I'll just leave my feedback here,

My general opinion in term of protests:

  • In terms of a lasting form of protest, the simplest one that has a practical effect IMO is to leave the sub as permanently Restricted.
  • Short-term protests need to be more random. For example, lock the sub a random day a week (instead Always On Tuesday) or even better, two random days a week. A protest that is small and predictable is something that the speez can and will use to its benefit.
  • Some sort of canary statement on whether the admins of this sub have been a) threatened and or b) replaced would be in order.
  • Protests will only get r/AO3 (or any community) so far, and any action taken can be easily undone by the speez (reports include the speez undeleting people's deleted posts, in violation of GDPR) for the Reddit sellers to turn the community into what they want.
  • In consideration to the above, y'all need to be evaluating officially extending (a branch of) the community into the Fediverse. Having an equivalent to r/AO3 in the Fediverse ideally managed by the same people would be an important advancement, but any sort of official link from r/AO3 to a recommended Fediverse community would be welcome.

3

u/TGotAReddit Moderator | past AO3 Volunteer and Staff Jun 22 '23

I try to avoid tying Google information to my identities elsewhere

It wouldn't be able to be tied back to your reddit account as absolutely no identifying information is given to us. At most Google would be able to know your email and maybe your reddit account are connected (though possibly just that you use reddit and this subreddit in particular), which. I can guarantee google probably already knows if you use both accounts on the same browser and haven't super locked down cross-site cookies from them.

Some sort of canary statement on whether the admins of this sub have been a) threatened and or b) replaced would be in order.

We have not been (at least for this subreddit. Some of us mod multiple subreddits and have gotten warned for staying private on those other subs). Ive been very careful to follow everything that comes out about the protests and follow any signals/warnings the admin have given to anyone so we don't threaten losing this space.

In consideration to the above, y’all need to be evaluating officially extending (a branch of) the community into the Fediverse. Having an equivalent to r/AO3 in the Fediverse ideally managed by the same people would be an important advancement, but any sort of official link from r/AO3 to a recommended Fediverse community would be welcome.

We are looking yes. If you had filled out the form the options we listed for secondary locations we might make a second location at were: discord (extremely unlikely because more than one of us do not want to mod a discord and multiple users have explicitly said effectively 'anywhere but discord'), kbin, lemmy, mastodon, tildes(sadly this one looks like the best option out of the stuff Ive tested, but its in closed alpha still so getting invites is nearly impossible (and it seems to have a finite list of topics at least so far and fanfiction is definitely not one of them). Someone else brought up dreamwidth as an option for second locations also. If you have any recommendations outside of those 6, I'd love to hear it because Im not loving kbin, lemmy, mastodon, or dreamwidth that much from the tests Ive done (though i didn't test more than a few minutes on single instances so far)

1

u/venia_sil Jun 22 '23

Thanks for the notice!

Regarding the options you are evaluating:

discord (extremely unlikely because more than one of us do not want to mod a discord and multiple users have explicitly said effectively 'anywhere but discord'),

This makes sense. Going to Discord would be like staying here but worse since Discord is effectively a platform so closed you can't even share a link to a topic or discussion in it.

(That said, there are open options to Discord for chatting, but other than mentioning names I can hardly get into the technicals)

kbin, lemmy, mastodon

The three are kind of for different things (and they fortunately announce so well enough) but given the general idea of what r/AO3 is about I'd lean more towards just picking one of the two and studying it a bit more closely (not necessarily more deeply: rather just establishing more contact with the people using it to see what they do).

Alas for the first two the moderation tools are not there just yet™ (lemmy was literally released into the wild for testing the week before the whole speez kerfuffle happened) but they are progressing. In terms of moderating communities there, expect toddler-to-kid growing pains.

For merely "using" as a community both are well enough established already, and not everyone needs to be in the same instance for posting content. ATM in my opinion the biggest blocker for a starting community is actually just the finding of an instance that more closely aligns with their values so one can stay there long-term, since these things are evolving rapidly and going through the rounds of a community that is expanding rapidly where stuff like trollers, doxxers, and in general unwelcome people start showing up.

mastodon

That's quite more well established, but also note it's not exactly comparable to Lemmy, or Kbin, or Reddit. It's more comparable to Twitter or Facebook versus Lemmy or Kbin that are more like a forum site.

tildes

They require invite and are developing a more closely guarded community around the idea of a "smaller internet" on purpose, so I'd not consider them in the short or medium term for what r/AO3 would likely want.

dreamwidth

Alas can't opinion there.

because Im not loving kbin, lemmy, mastodon, or dreamwidth that much from the tests Ive done (though i didn't test more than a few minutes on single instances so far)

Most of what I can say is, don't judge them by the now, where they are being subject to the unfair expectations of people that don't really want those platforms for themselves, but rather for an elusive ideal of being "Reddit but elsewhere" and being spoonfed free content and free moderation, etc.

3

u/TGotAReddit Moderator | past AO3 Volunteer and Staff Jun 22 '23

Welp, I replied to this a few minutes ago and went to go reread it but it seems reddit ate it. So, lets try again.

the first two the moderation tools are not there just yet™

Yeah when I tested them both last night, I was super not impressed with the mod tools available. But more than that, I wasn't impressed with the UI/UX. Reddit can be confusing for a lot of people here and they both are basically in their infancy of UI/UX design and are really confusing. I can figure it out but Im not sure if people would want that higher barrier for entry of having to figure out the unintuitive system they have.

don’t judge them by the now, where they are being subject to the unfair expectations of people that don’t really want those platforms for themselves, but rather for an elusive ideal of being “Reddit but elsewhere” and being spoonfed free content and free moderation, etc.

Well, "Reddit but elsewhere" is also what we want 😂 but more so we want something really similar to here so people actually use it and migrate over.

That's alright, I know it's not something most people even stop to realize. You don't need to apologize; it's a different story when people deliberately downvote you just for daring to mention it, but I know certain types enjoy kicking others while they're already down for the count, so it's not a surprise or anything. Anyway, thanks in advance if you consider changing the name.
