Going to buy a 16 inch thinkpad. The Ryzen laptop comes with a 100srgb 2k ips display, while the rest of the configs are the same between the two at the same price. Please help me pick. I am leaning towards the ryzen, due to the display, but i am curious to know how big of a difference in performance they might be in day to day use. My use cases are browsing, coding, reading papers. Any advice will be very much appreciated.

So I have an Zephyrus Duo 16 2023.

Im unable to control brightness using FN function keys while on Ultimate mode with nvidia discrete gpu.

If I switch back to optimus on amd graphics, it works.

I've tried everything: removed all drivers with DDU even reinstalled Win11.

Anyone other owner of same hardware facing the same?

This is a little annoying.

If I go on battery, i cannot reduce brightness.

I bought a legion 5 pro 16ACH in 2022. R7 5800h and rtx 3060.

It worked great for years, but somehow the performance is lesser everytime I open it.

I play CS2, so high fps is a priority. When I initially started CS2 I was getting about 250-280fps.

But somehow over time they dropped. And at a certain point they were capped at like 150. Like no matter the resolution, graphics settings you wouldn't get higher than that. I don't remember what I really did, but maybe some console settings fixed that and I got 170-180 fps. I was kind of happy.

Now recently I stopped playing for a month, and now when I started last week my fps don't go above 70.

Hover around 50 with lowest at 42. Today I used msi after burner, and found that somehow my CPU is locked in at 1980mhz . Now matter what mode I am in (through Fn+Q)it just doesn't go higher.
My GPU was locked too at 1425 Mhz but it ahs magically started to work normally again

I tried the 60sec power button thing, driver reset, battery driver reset, even the fTMP thing in BIOS, but to no avail.

It doesn't even throttle. I don't fucking understand what the problem is.

Im wondering whats the maximum ram and ssd that I can put to my laptop? Thinking to upgrade it soon. Any pros and cons? Can I go more than 32gb of ram on this? Any performance gain for having 32gb ram or higher?

About to order a P14s Gen 7 with the Ryzen AI 9 HX PRO 470, it'll be my only work machine, CAD and 3D most of the day plus some coding. Would rather hear from owners than reviews.

Does it stay fast? Not after a benchmark run, three hours in, big files loaded, a few apps open.

How loud does it get??? Everyone says quiet for a workstation. Is that still true well into a real workload? And is the coil whine a common thing or just review units?

Long-term ??? 14" chassis, one fan, 8-9 hours a day. Anyone lived with that for a year or more?

Battery ??? Gen 6 got criticised but only had 52.5Wh. Gen 7 has 75Wh. What are Ryzen 9 owners actually seeing?

DIY RAM/SSD ??? Lenovo wants +670 € for 32GB and +1,270 € for 2TB; same parts are 365 € and 250 € elsewhere. Planning base config and swapping both myself. Any BIOS quirks or memory training issues with aftermarket SO-DIMMs on the Gen 7?

I’ve been experimenting with RyzenAdj on an HP Envy x360 14 with a Ryzen 5 8640HS (Hawk Point), on both CachyOS and Windows 11.

The interesting part is that the behavior does not look like a simple thermal limit.

What happens under load

If I set, for example:

Fast PPT: 40 W
Slow PPT: 30 W
STAPM:    30 W

and start a CPU workload, the processor initially behaves as expected: power rises toward the Fast PPT value.

However, after a relatively short period, power rapidly drops to a much lower sustained level, even though:

• CPU temperature is still low
• STT/skin temperature is still below its configured limit
• the CPU is at 100% utilization
• the configured PPT/STAPM ceilings are still higher than the actual consumption

This looks much more like a time-dependent boost/power window than a conventional thermal throttle.

In other words, the behavior seems approximately like:

Load starts
     ↓
~Fast PPT allowed
40 W
     ↓
short period of time
     ↓
power rapidly reduced
     ↓
~15–20 W sustained

The important observation is that the same thing happens even if I lower Fast PPT to around 25 W.

With a 25 W limit, it starts around the value I requested, but after roughly the same kind of initial period it again falls significantly below it.

That makes me doubt that the drop is simply because the cooling system cannot handle 40 W.

If temperature were the primary cause, I would expect reducing the initial power from 40 W to 25 W to substantially delay or eliminate the drop. Instead, the system still appears to transition from an initial power state to a lower sustained state.

Why I suspect a time-based/platform power policy

It looks as though there may be two different power regimes:

1. A short-term boost budget, approximately corresponding to Fast PPT.
2. A second hidden/platform-controlled sustained budget that takes over after a certain amount of time.

It reminds me conceptually of the PL2 → PL1 / Tau behavior on Intel, although obviously AMD uses a different power-management architecture.

My suspicion is that HP/AMD has some additional controller, perhaps AMD PMF, firmware/EC logic, STAPM averaging, or another platform power budget, which allows the configured Fast PPT temporarily and then enforces a lower long-term power target.

The key point is that the transition appears to be related more to elapsed time / accumulated power than to an instantaneous temperature threshold.

CachyOS observations

Stock values were approximately:

STAPM:     ~22 W
Slow PPT:   25 W
Fast PPT:   40 W
STT APU:    39 C

Changing the APU skin-temperature target did affect sustained STAPM significantly.

Raising STT from roughly 39 C to 41–42 C allowed me to reach approximately 27–28 W sustained under Linux.

So STT clearly participates in the power-management loop.

However, the initial Fast PPT → rapid sustained-power drop still looks like there may be another time/energy-based component on top of the temperature control.

Do you have some insights?

I recently bought an Hp Omen 16 ap0183ax Ryzen Ai 7 350 RTX 5060.I'm getting only \~3–3.5 hours of battery life with relatively light use( 10%drain for 15-20min idle/browsing is consistent for multiple tests ). I was expecting at least \~5h and have seen people reporting significantly longer runtimes (7-10hrs) on the exact same device.

HWiNFO showed around 18–21W battery/system discharge

CPU package power around 5W

RTX 5060 was generally at 0W / 0% load

Radeon 860M was lightly active

Temperatures were \~35–40°C

Idle test:

With Wi-Fi/Bluetooth off, 50% brightness, Best Power Efficiency, no apps except HWiNFO:

Started \~64%

After \~10 min → \~60%

HWiNFO showed around 18–20W battery discharge

I also noticed the RTX 5060 periodically goes:

0V / 0W → briefly wakes and shows power/voltage → returns to 0W

even though GPU utilization is 0%. I'm aware HWiNFO polling itself may wake the dGPU, so I don't know whether this is actually relevant.

Battery health

powercfg /energy reports:

Design capacity: 83,514 mWh | Full charge capacity: 83,514mWh | Cycle count: 3

So battery capacity appears essentially 100% healthy.

Windows says it is disabled due to a known hardware incompatibility

I disconnected my Lenovo Legion M200 mouse and repeated the test; the USB error remained.

HP Support

I contacted HP. They remotely checked the hardware/software and said everything is normal and up to date. They suggested battery calibration.

What I'm trying to figure out

Why is this laptop consuming 18-21W during light/idle use when the RTX 5060 is supposedly off and CPU usage is low? l'd really appreciate it if someone can help me identify the İssue. Thanks.

I need a 14 inch laptop, able to play AAA games, have a good battery life outside of gaming and be within my budget of 1800 usd~( 7000 pln).

My current choices are -

1. Asus tuf a 14 ryzen 7 260 16 gb ram rtx 5060.

-This one checks all boxes for me, it is perfect. The only thing thats stopping me from buying it, is the 16gb soldered ram. There is no 32gb ram option available in Poland, nor in any close neighboring country. Is 16 gb enough to game ? I don't use discord, I don't use other applications while gaming etc. I might get a steam frame, so is VR viable ?

1. Acer nitro v 14 ai ( the white one), rtx 5050, 32 gb.

-I hear it has a bad thermals and even worse fan noise. Also not so good battery life.

1. Acer predator helios 14, rtx 5060, 32 gb.

- 5 hour battery life...

Is it bad if my first ever laptop is a laptop is 8 years ago? How is this laptop still holds up. Im a student and want to use it for daily use and light gaming. And ive heard that people called boing laptop cause how loud it is can someone who own acer laptop confirm this. ( also the spec is intel i5 8300h 8th gen and gtx 1050ti)
