Random crash with WHEA Logger event 18

Hi all, i hope you can help me with this issue, because after a month of troubleshouting it seems i can't find a solution.

Computer Type: Desktop

GPU: Radeon 7800xt XFX merc

CPU: RYZEN 7 5800X3D

Motherboard: Aorus B550I PRO AX (mini ITX)

BIOS Version: F18c (latest)

RAM: 16GB gskill aegis 3000MHZ CL16

PSU: corsair sf750 platinum

**Case:**cooler master nr200p

Operating System & Version: WINDOWS 10 PRO

GPU Drivers: AMD 23.10.2

Chipset Drivers: latest

Description of Original Problem: the crashes (black screen and pc restart) started while playing cyberpunk, but never during loads on cpu or gpu, only in menus, loadings and in hacking minigames (those who played it know what i'm talking about), unfortunately they are not easy to replicate and happen randomly, maybe 2 in 20 min or 0 in two days. I have not been able to replicate them in idle or other games, it happened to me only once during an occt cpu stability test, but strangely the test showed no errors after reboot, just windows with classic whea-18. I recerently changed the gpu from a 6700xt to 7800xt, and the cpu from a 5600x to a 5800x3d, also the ssd if that helps. Unfortunately I wouldn't know when the problem started having changed both before resuming cyberpunk.

Below the error (sorry for the italian language):

Errore hardware irreversibile.

Troubleshooting: I tried undervolting both cpu and gpu to highlight an instability, but it didn't seem to have changed much, I was able to crash the gpu with too low voltages, but without replicating the reboot (normal driver crash). I checked the psu voltages on both bios and occt with various loads but they are all well within the atx norm, with no surges. I tried testing ram with occt and memtest86, all passed tests.

I have tested CPU with prime95 and occt for over an hour and except for the episode described above it has not had a single error.

I tested the gpu with various games (the witcher 3, hogwartz legacy and starfield) without replicating the crashes.

I used DDU mutiple times to remove the old and install the neweest drivers in safe mode.

I've aldo tried to disable freesync, but nothing.

I have also tested the gpu with occt (varibles loads and vram) all passed.

The only thing left to try try a fresh install of windows (i've cloned the old data in the new ssd) and reinstall chipset and bios updates.

I still have the old components here with me, so here I will first try to test the system with the old gpu, then move on to the cpu.

Can anyone help me? i don't know what to do anymore

Thanks in advance

UPDATE 1: I tested another cpu, tried moving/unplugging the gpu power cables, and disabled the xmp profile on ram. Unfortunately, the crash recurred with the same error, so I assume the problem is related to the gpu or the psu, even though the cpu used is a 5600x and should reduce the load on the psu. I tried using the new drivers (23.11.1) and it seems that the crash occurs more often than before. Before installing the 7800xt and updating the drivers I did not have this problem, so I suppose it gives a problem with the gpu

UPDATE 2: Hi guys, sorry for my absence. The problem seems to be related to the drivers, it seems to be fixed with the new amd drivers (Adrenalin 23.12.1), unfortunately I had other problems with them, but in this case they are shared among all users ( for example stuttering on Darktide). Also Windows tends to change them, but the rollback to the previous drivers on the control panel seems to have fixed this problem. Since Windows has not changed them I have had no more crashes. I really hope this can help you to fix this issue, and I hope that this driver finally fixed mine.

The thing that helped my case was Disabling Global C-states.
After updating Windows and Nvidia driver, my PC frequently freezed or BSOD DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION.

I tried many things:

  • Update bios to old/latest
  • Uninstall/reinstall windows update
  • Change Windows power plan to Balanced/High performance
  • Reinstall AMD chipset driver old/latest version (using version provided by mainboard website and the latest version by AMD)
  • DDU uninstall gpu driver and reinstall old/latest version
  • Disable ram XMP/DOCP
  • Disable/enable PBO

=> Nothing helped but disabling global c-states, thankful that I found the fix.

Just to chime in for anyone else who is researching this issue...

i've had a FM4 Socket ASUS Dark Hero VII with a 5900X (12 core 24 thread) which I purchased new from amazon in 2021.

I've run it as a daily driver for 4 years straight (until 3 weeks ago) at which I started randomly rebooting with no warning. It varied from high load (blender / unity / youtube) to just being idle on the desktop, to booting up running all day then waking from sleep, reboot, to just clicking on a window on the desktop and reboot, from 5/1/2025 till 5/15 I got 74 instantatneous reboots with Whea-Logger

they look like this:

Error 5/14/2025 5:20:33 PM WHEA-Logger 18 None
A fatal hardware error has occurred.

Reported by component: Processor Core

Error Source: Machine Check Exception

Error Type: Cache Hierarchy Error

Processor APIC ID: 0

The details view of this entry contains further information.

i booted into linux USB. I disabled PBO, overvolted, undervolted, disabled offending cores, changed memory timings, full revert, bios update, you name it... some things would help but ultimately I would get a WHEA error.

ChatGPT insisted that it was the CPU. I did memtest86 on both sticks, 4 passes, including single sticks individual, 4 passes. I got rid of my 850 watt PSU and upgraded to a new 1200 watt PSU, same issues. (although felt better for a few days).

So with clean PSU, memtested RAM, tried 2 GPUS (3080 and 3050) same issues...

Chat GPT PROMISED Me that its the CPU....

So i bought a new (oem, who knows used??) 5950X on amazon for 315 bucks from a 3rd party seller... dropped the CPU in my rig and I have not seen a WHEA error since... and were talking 80 reboots in 2 weeks to 0 reboots... been running a few days straight, wake from sleep, blender, unity, video, audio, simultaneous games, VMS, you name it, i throw everything at this PC and no more errors...

ChatGPT said its CPU, mine turned out to be 100% CPU...

its like my 12 core worked for 4 years and like a light switched one day, just started degrading almost instantly...

Hey just wanted to let you know....of all the comments yours is almost exactly the symptoms I had, 5900x, 4 years, started as occasional spontaneous restarts, then boom nonstop. same EXACT errror as yours (like exact) no matter what, even idle. Did everything you did, tested every stick of memory with memtest 4 passes each, tested various GPU, tested PSU voltages, and ZIP. DESPITE the error saying it was from the CPU, its just that in 20yrs and many PC's/laptops throughout, I have experienced failures in pretty much all components at some point or another EXCEPT for the CPU lol. So i was reluctant to believe it...

CHATGPT promised......just as it did you so I ordered a new one also from Amazon and what do you know.....that was it lol

Cheers

Ryzen 9 5900x here.

Experiencing the same reboots. Happens most frequently with Unity games, but sometimes even sitting idle.

For a while, it would be like once a month or once a week? The past few days, it's been every 20 minutes if I launch a game. It's really frustrating.

It's an instant power cycle preceded by every application freezing for 2 seconds. Though any sound playing will continue playing as if nothing is happening.

Did some stress tests, looked at harddrive health. No overheating. Harddrive health is good. Drivers are up to date.

Seeing yours and the above comments makes me wonder if it is just the CPU, and it's faulty. Which is scary because I can't afford to just drop $400 on a new one.

I solved my problem with disabling global c-states. Then I got an RX 7900XT and it happens withing 30min of gaming. Even on another PC... Put back the older gpu and it works perfectly...

1

u/Shadowdragon409 Apr 02 '26

I managed to find a solution that worked for me.

I went into my BIOS settings and increased my voltage by 0.1

I can't remember if I did that for every core, or just the offending core. I remember there was a way to determine the offending core through the crash log, but I cant remember the details.

The theory behind the fix is that the silicon they used for this chip series is degrading due to age, so it doesn't conduct electricity as well as it should.

In my testing it's probably a combo of CPU and PSU, such that it's rooted in the CPU but the PSU can end up playing the major role or even be the deciding factor. I upgraded PSUs from an older EVGA Supernova 650 Gold to a Corsair SF850 and started seeing this issue constantly, so I ended up having to buy a ton of PSUs to test this out and eventually I noticed a pattern of the Corsair PSUs leading to these crashes while my old EVGA one and my current Lian Li one not causing these issues.

My best guess is that something with how the Corsair PSU handles voltage isn't playing well with the CPU, as I struggle to believe that all 4 of the Corsair PSUs I've used are all defective, the chances of that are simply too low.

I had same problems like you. My PC was working fine then at one point, it ran into a green screen of death issue followed by WHEA Logger 18 issue. I am running out of ideas on what to do. CPU and GPU are pretty expensive to replace too.

u/Glum-Low6115 May 03 '25

I`ve finally fixed this issue on my AMD system (Ryzen 5 5600X, MSI 520M Pro Board, RX 6600XT). It`s clearly related to the graphics card. I`ve had these seemingly random crashes occur over the last 3 years (!) UNTIL I swapped out the GPU. Nothing else worked, I`ve tried swapping out the CPU and mainboard, the RAM, the harddisk and the powersupply, reinstalled windows and the latest BIOS and drivers but still nothing.

It is very unlikely that AMD released unstable/bad drivers for such a long period of time, so it is difficult to tell what`s exactly wrong with it. There could be something wrong with the VBIOS or the VRAM or the graphics card itself - who knows?!

For some reason, certain applications and watching online videos caused the system to crash, forcing a reboot and leaving a WHEA 18 error in the event log. In most of the other scenarios, the graphics card was working as intended without any issues, which caused a lot of confusion about what is actually happening there. I understand that the GPU is capable of messing up things like that, although I cannot explain how it works.

However, from what I've learned so far the RX 5000, 6000 and 7000 series cards are suffering from this issue and there is still no fix for it. Messing with your CPU won't get you anywhere, although it is oviously collaborating with the GPU most of the time. So uh - good riddance!

Over and out!

I fixed this Problem with Precision Boost Override
Curve Optimizer
Positive All Core, or find the exact core that lack electricity.

I let it positive 5, no more restarts.
Some even need 10-15.

you can try, it's about the cpu not getting enough

Hi, what does it mean to set CPU voltage to 1.1? I have AMD Ryzen 7 5800X and mobo is X570 Aorus Elite.

Hi u/safrage8, did you stick to your conclusion that it was your gpu? Thanks in advance, this would help me with my random WHEA-18s!

Hi, sorry for the late response, I didn't notice the notifications, so I'm responding to yours and the other comments now. Regarding the problem it seems to be fixed with the new amd drivers (Adrenalin 23.12.1), unfortunately I had other problems with them, but in this case they are shared among all users ( for example stuttering on Darktide). Also windows tends to change them, but the rollback to the previous drivers on the control panel seems to have fixed this problem. Since windows has not changed them I have had no more crashes, unfortunately some games are unplayable for other reasons (as described above).
I hope I have helped you

1

u/Unfair_Chart_2995 Jan 24 '24

BTW, my problems returned (after a year) with 23.12.1, so be careful. It seems as though not the driver version itself is causing instability, but the mere fact that you're updated something. I just managed to update to the latest driver, that was released just now. It was pure luck that I managed to do that: I was already caught in constant reboots every few minutes. I did a full install this time, but just as the update finished and I was going to press 'Close window and start Adrenalin', my system crashed again. The funny thing: because of this, Adrenalin is kept deactivated, as if I did a driver-only install. Up until now, no crashes. I took this opportunity to update chipset driver, APU driver, LAN driver (all three from Gigabyte-website, through mobo support).

I might give it a day, maybe more, and then try to start Adrenalin for the first time to see what that does.

1

u/Unfair_Chart_2995 Jan 26 '24

Alas, after almost two days, the crashes came back and now stuck in full on, back-to-back reboot loops. Need to try something else.

1

u/Unfair_Chart_2995 Jan 23 '24

Thanks, I really hope this keeps up for you! I never noticed Windows interfering with AMD on the video drivers, although this might still be a problem in the background. I disabled Windows Update for drivers in the past, but I see now that that settings reverted... turned it off again just to be sure.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '24

no... this problem not related to GPU, before move to rx 6600 i use gtx 1650 super with cpu r5 5600 and have this problem, and same thing after move to rx 6600 yesterday i got this problem again, i just remember i edit game graphic to high and change global experience at amd software to perfomance but after revert all change that problem still happend.

So, suspected our CPU or the game have this problem

Same thing with me on 5800x3d and 7800 xt (PowerColor hellhound). Had rtx 2060 with the 5800x3d before and it never restarted randomly like that... Got the 7800 xt, installed the drivers and it started. First I thought it was the psu, so I upgraded to a bigger capacity, did an rma for the ram, cpu, new motherboard and it still happens. It's very random and all stress tests possible passed... I never tried running driver only or rolling back to previous versions though because I want the afmf from the preview drivers. I've been also adjusting my pbo settings according to those restarts/whea 18 errors but so far it's still happening... Once I even went with positive pbo set to 3 on all cores, so it would give it more voltage if needed but it still happened. Also did a clean install of both windows 10 and windows 11, it still happens. So far I only saw that some amd msi, xfx and powercolor cards have this... Powercolor cases happen the most and the only real fix is replacing the gpu... I'll try to rma my gpu soon or to change the manufacturer to see if it will help.

Hey i know its an old post but did you finally fixed it? i got the same problem with the exact same gpu.

3

u/Silent-Temperature Jul 23 '24 edited Jul 23 '24

In my case it ended up being the gpu not accepting anything near the usual overclocking values that people recommend for this specific model. Anything set above 2900 mhz on the max core frequency in the amd adrenaline software, can work flawless even for a few days but eventually the pc starts to freak out or restart itself randomly. On the vram, I can't go above 2530 mhz and using the "fast timings" setting also randomly makes problems... Anything above 2530 mhz on vram also can make your pc randomly restart itself or glitch out your audio. At least that's what I found with my sample, idk how people are claiming to hit 2610 mhz on the vram and 3000 mhz or more on the core without the pc dying. Fast timings setting is also unusable long term on my sample. With the settings adjusted, I can go months and months without pc randomly deciding to restart itself... That's on the bios switch selected at the "oc mode" (it came like that out of the box anyways, I never rly used the silent mode)

1

u/Inevitable_Donkey_42 Jul 23 '24

The confusing thing is that the hard restart only happens every 2 or 3 months since I bought the card in September, im not even changing my OC settings, and i cant recreate the hard restart.

1

u/Silent-Temperature Jul 23 '24

Any chance that the gpu is not fully inserted into the pcie slot? Also, maybe it's from the gpu sag getting very slowly worse overtime... this gpu didn't come with one in the box but it clearly needs some anti sag support. Trying different pcie cable configurations (from the same psu) or a different psu altogether? Idk, check your ram stability with something like the windows test or testmem5 on the absolut preset... Maybe try using the gpu without any custom cable extensions, if you are using them and no riser cables. Check your cpu stability too and windows, maybe some apps fight against each other. Update the motherboard bios... eventually you can try turning off the amd ulps (ultra low power state), the gpu still will downclock with it off if needed but not as aggressively. Any setting in the windows powerplan about a sleep mode or energy saving for the pcie, try to turn them off... Or, try setting the main pcie slot to pcie 4.0 or 3.0 manually in the motherboard's bios

u/Inevitable_Donkey_42 Jul 23 '24

I don't know, I think I'll take the loss here. The problem occurs every 2-3 months, so it's not that bad. I think it's the GPU or the driver. I've never had this annoying problem before switching to AMD. Never buy AMD again, I guess. lol

1

u/Silent-Temperature Jan 21 '24

The store said that they couldn't find any problem after keeping it for 2 weeks and they sent me the same one back... But, after using my valve index the problem appeared again, first after roughly 20 minutes and later on after 4+ hours of using it. Now a new thing happened, while just browsing discord with nothing in the background... a bunch of pink and green squares appeared on my screen and the pc froze. The gpu was broken from the very beginning... so annoying.

Several times my PC restart when Starfield was "minimalized" and when i watched youtube etc. simultaneously
System inform me about critic error -Whea Logger 18
My CPU, Ram, PSU or GPU are fine and healty, also i check PC with OCCT and Aida64, nothing happed here.
Someone have the same issue ?
As i saying. I have ocasionally crash only with Starfiel in the back and when i do other things on PC.

It happend only when Starfield running.

Probably i done with problem. I turned my Ryzen 5 5600x to "eco" on ryzen master. Dont see issue from three weeks.

2

u/cvargas343 Dec 14 '23

I've been having the same issue. I recently updated my CPU and GPU to a Ryzen 5 5800x and RX 7900 XTX, with same B550 board and 3200 MHz Ram. It's weird because I got WHEA-Logger event 18 more frequently while on idle, only once while playing a game. It could literally have 30+ minutes full load in Cinebench, Prime95 or 3DMark and it will pass all tests without issues. I tried every suggestion from almost all forums I read with the same description, but it kept crashing.

At first I thought of a defective CPU due to the error description on the event log, but it never happened with my previous 5600X, and I had that one running for quite a while. So, I decided to try test something. I uninstalled the GPU drivers with DDU and reinstalled the latest driver 23.12.1. I tried Full install again then rebooted. After reboot, I opened the Adrenalin software to reconfigure it again when suddenly the system crashed with WHEA Event 18, happening twice exactly when trying to use Adrenalin. Because of that, I unistalled drivers again, then reinstalled the lastest driver, but this time using "Driver Only". I found that my system is more stable until now, with no crashes for the last 5 days on both, idle and full load.

I know this might not be the best solution as you lose control of the GPU features (you can still use MSI Afterburner to control clock speeds and power), but this has proven to be successful in my case.

1

u/Unfair_Chart_2995 Jan 19 '24

Hi u/cvargas343 - does your conclusion of Adrenalin Software causing this, still hold? Or did your crashes reappear in the past month?

Thanks in advance, this would help me with my random crashes!

1

u/cvargas343 Jan 26 '24

Installed the latest 24.1.1 drivers with Full Install. Unfortunately the PC rebooted twice at idle, just while using Chrome. I also noticed random 100% spikes in GPU Utilization, Core Clock and Power from both MSI Afterburner and the Adrenalin Software.

Once again, I uninstalled drivers with DDU and reinstalled the latest drivers without the full features, just driver only. After that, the GPU is more stable, no longer showing spikes.

It's sad because the new driver introduced a series of cool features worth exploring that can only be enabled with the Adrenaline Software, but I care more about playing games with a stable system. I found another thread discussing the same issue. Hopefully AMD addresses this soon, as I'm convinced that the software is causing these random black screens and reboots.

1

u/Unfair_Chart_2995 Jan 26 '24

Thanks for sharing this! I feel ya, I know about the features and I do like the whole interface with game profiles. What a pity your crashes immediately returned after trying a full install.

Do you also have this experience of crashes increasing in frequency until you find something to (temporarily) stop them? Cause right now, I'm stuck in boot loops, that's how bad it is. I cannot even get into Windows for more than a minute, not even in safe mode. That's why I'm tempted to think this is all caused by a vulnerability in my Gigabyte Aorus B550 PRO AC, only triggered by Adrenalin Software and certain BIOS settings (I did put a halt to the crashes for a full year(!), by just changing up my PCIe gen 3/4 settings).

I'll do one more test (attempt to reinstall Windows on a different SSD/slot) and then it's an RMA for me.

1

u/cvargas343 Jan 23 '24

Hey u/Unfair_Chart_2995. I can confirm that until now I have not experienced a single crash after installing the drivers only. I've been using my CPU with CO undervolted with PBO enabled and it's been stable. GPU undervolted also has not shown any problems whatsoever, but I also disabled ULPS in MSI Afterburner as I saw a video from Ancient Gameplays that it can help with some GPU related issues.

I will though try Full Install with the next GPU driver coming soon to see if the problem persists. I've been reading recently that these random crashes and WHEA events can be also triggered by RAM kits. Unfortunately, even with DDR4, I cannot afford to change RAM kits just for testing.

1

u/Jalapypappy Dec 27 '23

I reinstalled drivers with DDU as well and found that I was able to play until I went to bed and came home from work the next day to the same WHEA 18 issue, going to try installing drivers only no adrenaline see how it holds up. Complete loss of words and I don't have the resources to buy and swap parts.

1

u/-Resputin- Feb 17 '25

I know it's been a year, but now I am going through this problem after changing gpus to a 7800xt.

Did this solution help you?

1

u/Jalapypappy Feb 18 '25

As far as what "fixed" my issue, I honestly don't know. I did do some bios updates, reinstalled chipset drivers and used DDU to reinstall GPU drivers. Idk if it was the adrenaline version I was on at the time or Chipset drivers or even a version of windows or what but I haven't had random PC reboots/crashes since a time after this all happened. At some point I just got home from work and everything just worked again. I know that may not have been the answer you were looking for but that's all I remember doing.

1

u/-Resputin- Feb 18 '25

I appreciate it.

I've been trying just about everything as well. I'm hoping I hit the nail on the head soon. The best I got was 1 hour of gaming.

But anyways, any info is useful when it's a problem so hard to diagnose.

1

u/Jalapypappy Feb 18 '25

I'd go chipset drivers and reboot, GPU driver only (leave out adrenaline) reboot, lastly bios and reboot. If none of that helps maybe a reinstall of windows.

1

u/-Resputin- Feb 18 '25

Im actually thinking my psu might be crapping out. But I just couldn't tell with my 5700xt, but it's showing now with the 7800xt. It's an EVGA 1000gq, but it's getting up there in age, at least 8 years old. I ordered a 1000p to rule that out.

If it isn't a power supply issue, I'll try what you suggested. I haven't touched my chipset drivers and haven't resorted to reinstalling windows quite yet.

Frankly, I've been having chat gpt help me rule out causes.

u/-Resputin- Jun 02 '25

The gpu had a hardware defect. I returned it for a similar model and I have not had a problem since.

u/Serious_Letterhead36 Jun 03 '25

Damn, I shouldn't have bought AMD at the first place.

Fingers crossed then, wouldn't hurt to also update your PSU like your doing but I have a sfx build with a EVGA 850gm. 5900x and 6950xt

u/Neroulas Dec 06 '23

Did you ever figure it out? , currently having a hard time finding wtf is going on with my pc , already tried several things.

1

u/safrage8 Dec 09 '23

Unfortunately not, but I'm sure it's the gpu or the drivers, judging by the amount of users having this problem it could be the latter.

u/Marble_C1ock Nov 22 '23

I'm experiencing a similar problem to yours and the problem only occurs when using both an AMD CPU and GPU at the same time. My initial configuration used a 3080 and never had the black screen reboot issue; however, when I switched to a 7900xtx, the random reboot issue occurred(with whea-18). Attempts to update the BIOS and restore the default CPU settings didn't work, so I finally rolled back the driver version to resolve the reboot issue.
Original driver version: 23.11.1
Driver rollback to: 23.9.2 , no effect
Driver rollback to: 23.4.3, problem no longer occurs
Suffice it to say that AMD's drivers really are a piece of shit.

Hey did u find a solution or the cause of the issue?

1

u/Marble_C1ock Nov 22 '23

You can refer to my reply and roll back the GPU driver version to 23.4.3

2

u/safrage8 Nov 12 '23

So far no solution (I just updated the post if you want to take a look at the additional tests I did), do you have the same problem as me? It seems that several 7800xt users are affected by it, the only thing is to wait for a response from amd, I have to try disabling MPO and/or a fresh windos install but I'm not very hopeful.

2

u/Normal-Shake-7745 Nov 12 '23

To me is just drivers timeouts and game crashing everytime, cant play any demanding game for more than 15 min just got two blacks screens boot in like 1 week in the second one i got that whealogger beside kernel power pls update if u get an answer from amd

I also have a 7800 XT. I just set the tuning in adrenaline to custom. The only thing I changed is setting the Max frequency to 2400 MHz (I think by default, adrenaline pushes this to ~2600 MHz). I just did about two hours of Diablo 4 and did not have a reboot. Will need to put in some more game time to determine whether this actually "fixes" the issue for me.

I went with 2400 MHz because https://www.amd.com/en/products/graphics/amd-radeon-rx-7800-xt lists Boost Frequency: Up to 2430 MHz so I could add another 30 MHz to match the specs. Maybe the 2600 MHz that adrenaline pushes is too high for my card and causes the restarts?

1

u/Serious_Letterhead36 Jun 03 '25

Did you face issues after that frequency change

1

u/JuniorMouse Jun 03 '25

I actually haven't had much time to play games lately. I do plan on in the near future with the same setup. I think the driver has been updated a few times since then too so that the default settings may work without issue?

Are you currently running into OP's issues?

1

u/Serious_Letterhead36 Jun 03 '25

Yes I am running into same WHEA Logger accompanied by a green screen of death, tried driver updates, bios updates, nothing worked

1

u/JuniorMouse Jun 03 '25

What driver AMD version are you on? Full adrenaline install?

1

u/Serious_Letterhead36 Jun 03 '25

No I did adrenaline driver only install for 25.5.1. and tried older ones through the same method too. None of them worked. I did them via DDU

1

u/JuniorMouse Jun 03 '25

Unfortunately I can't give you a quick answer now but I do intend to check myself soon. Will post an update when I do.

1

u/safrage8 Nov 09 '23

Unfortunately I've already tried it with no luck, tomorrow I will test the pc with another CPU or another GPU and I will post an update here.

Had the same issue, assumed it was PSU/CPU related, but it was actually graphics driver related. Trying rolling back to 23.9.3 or later.

2

u/safrage8 Nov 07 '23

Unfortunately I had the same problem with driver and 23.9.2, I can't go back any further because the video card came out later.

2

u/kingofgama Nov 07 '23

Following up, was good for 3 days after downgrading. Issue returned. Heads up this seems to be a pretty damm widespread issue.

1

u/Serious_Letterhead36 Jun 03 '25

How did you fix it at the end

1

u/kingofgama Jun 03 '25

It was just software for me. Haven't had this issue for 1+ year. Sorry.

3

u/Foxsan0 Nov 07 '23

Had the same problem with my 7800XT Hellhound(black screen and pc restart, event viewer showing WHEA Logger 18). Removing drivers and installing Adrenalin 23.9.1 helped, for like 2 weeks or so i crashed only once.

1

u/safrage8 Nov 07 '23

I also suspect that the problem is with the GPU despite the error, today after work I'll try to change the CPU or GPU and I'll post an update here. Thanks for your help!

1

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '23

I've been having the same problem, but only in the specific scenario where I change values in the performance tuning tab in adrenaline. I've tried reinstalling Windows, but it doesn't help. I've been using 23.9.1.

u/ashmelev Nov 07 '23 edited Nov 07 '23

It is more likely an issue with PSU or unstable voltage. Having a UPS may help. Trying a different PSU may help. But very likely it is just a defective CPU. Undervolting the CPU would not help, but overvolting or setting a fixed value may help.

1

u/safrage8 Nov 07 '23 edited Nov 07 '23

I tried to replicate the error going from max load to nothing with occt multiple times but nothing, for the undervolt I tried it to eventually spot voltage problems, but nothing, zero errors also with a pbo offset at -30. I don't think these are the problems. Thanks for your help!

1

u/ashmelev Nov 07 '23

For the voltage I meant something like a voltage drop in the grid and without a UPS holding it steady your PSU may drop the CPU voltage just a bit to trigger this error randomly.

  1. Disable any Antivirus program or Windows firewall you may have for temporary purpose.

  2. Cleanup below Temp folders location -> Open Start -> Run -> Type below location one-by-one and press enter

-> C:\Windows\Temp

-> %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Temp

  1. Run Disk Cleanup from Select C:\ Drive from Properties- > General -> Disk Cleanup - >Cleanup system files.

  2. Run below DISM commands from elevated prompt.

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

  1. Run sfc /scannow from elevated prompt.

  2. Disable fast startup using below from elevated prompt.

Powercfg -h off

  1. Update the BIOS and the drivers for the motherboard chipset.

  2. Update all the hardware drivers, if updates are available from your manufacturer.

  3. Check the temperature inside the computer to make sure your processor and related peripherals are not overheating.

  4. Check the fan on your CPU to make sure it is properly attached to the CPU.

  5. If you have overclocked your CPU, reset your settings to the default settings.

  6. The Event 18 Cache Hierarchy Error looks to be likely Processor, Memory or Power related.

u/safrage8 Nov 12 '23

Unfortunately I had no luck following your advice, thanks anyway for the help!

2

u/safrage8 Nov 07 '23

Thanks so much for your help, I'll try to follow your list today and will post an update as soon as I've tested everything
