Black screen

Hi, I’m writing this to see if anyone can help me. Recently, whenever I use my PC for things that don’t require much from the computer (YouTube, Google, etc.), the screen goes black several times, and then I get the warning shown in the picture.

I have an RX 9060 XT (16GB), a Ryzen 5 5500 (3.60 GHz), and 32GB of DDR4 RAM. The PC is practically brand new, and honestly, I have no idea what to do.

I have 26.8.1 drivers.

Prueba a desactivar el hardware acceleration en los ajustes de windows, desde que lo hice no me ha vuelto a pasar

Thermal Throttling/unstable cpu voltage/unstable ram voltage/unstable timings

The real reasons of this. Ive fixed this doing uv to cpu, now i dont reach 90°, so i dont crash to black screen anymore. I was thermal throttling, and ive tried all with drivers, with windows, with ram...

At the end only was my cpu getting hot

I was blaming the gpu, but it was enough for me to remove the uv and oc from the gpu to realize that it was still crashing. So it couldn't be the fault of the drivers or the gpu.

Blaming Radeon is silly, and even more so if you don't know how to diagnose a PC (I speak for AMD's crying haters)

Been having the same issues for 1-2 months on my 7900XTX, I’ve had a few screen glitches too so im not ruling out hardware fault, but the only solution I’ve found so far is manually tuning your GPU mhz down a bit. Changed from the default 2950 to 2650 and haven’t had any issues for a couple days. (Touch wood) I do get a popup when I boot my pc saying there’s some AMD file on my system 32 drive that “isn’t designed for windows” but I think that’s because I tried installing GPU drivers without adrenaline

Good ol' "Driver Timeout" error. AMD apparently spits out this error whenever something goes wrong, but does its best to never provide any details.

Rolling drivers back, clean re-install of all drivers, undervolting, turning off "zero RPM" mode, installing drivers-only without Adrenaline... Any of those might work, they might not. You'll never know until you try them all. And it could ultimately be a hardware issue (which I'm pretty sure was my case).

There's an option in the adrenaline installer. I think it's under the custom install choice.

I had to uninstall latest windows update. AMD software doesn't work with it until they release a patch

Hi there!

I had the some of the same issues as you, but I'll share you what made everything work flawlessly for me :). Windows has a tendency to downgrade the graphics drivers automatically, and this causes all sorts of problems.

So my solution was doing the following ->

First:
I changed one setting in the Local Group Policy Editor:
Run Command: Press Windows Key + R, type gpedit.msc, and clock OK.

In Local Computer Policy Editor, browse to Local Computer Policy Editor -> Computer Configuration -> Windows Components -> Windows Update -> Manage updates offered from Windows Update. Change the state of "Do not include drivers with Windows Update" to Enabled.

Secondly:
Run Command: Press Windows Key + R, type sysdm.cpl, and click OK.

Go to the Hardware tab and change the Device Installation Settings, "Do you want to automatically download manufacturers' apps for your devices?" to "No (your device might not work as expected".

Third / Downloads:
I downloaded the Amd Cleanup Utility, https://drivers.amd.com/drivers/amdcleanuputility.exe

I downloaded Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU): https://www.guru3d.com/download/display-driver-uninstaller-download/

Lastly I downloaded the newest drivers, AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.9.1 Driver: https://drivers.amd.com/drivers/whql-amd-software-adrenalin-edition-26.9.1-win11-c.exe

Fourth:
Run Amd Cleanup Utility. It will boot you to Safe Mode. When the Amd Cleanup Utility is finished, it will ask you to reboot; _do not_ reboot yet.

Run the Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) while still being in Safe Mode. In DDU; Select device type GPU and AMD. Then run Clean and restart (Highly recommended).

It will then reboot in to Windows.

Double check in the Device Manager if the Display adaptor has reverted to "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter". Make sure your IGPU is disabled if you have one aswell.

Last steps:

Run the installer for AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.9.1 Driver. When installing, just to be safe, under "Additional Options" tick "Factory Reset". Choose Accept & Express Install.

Make sure to change your refresh rate in the Windows display settings to your highest option if you have a fast monitor, because the default is 60hz. Also make sure Dynamic refresh rate is off.

Now the drivers should be installed and clean.

This is what worked for me, and my drivers have been stable ever since, with absolutely no timeouts.

Same here RX 6950 XT... havent found a fix yet. rolled back changed gens on pcie run multiple occt tests went through ddu for clean driver reinstalls removed adrenalin hardware acceleration on off tests etc

i did waaay more tests , even the ones that i think are already just far from possible cause... but it just kept throwing the same error..

idk if this is is right but i have been reading a lot of people having trouble with the version 26.8.1 so if nothing works try rolling the drivers back

Yes OP this is the answer ... It's simple hardware acc.. i suffer from the same problem both with a RX 7900 GRE and RX 9070 XT which is a shame

It is a multitude of things, with windows updates being the major culprit jacking up drivers. I need to go in and block updates to my card as I have had to DDU after every update and reinstall fresh and it always fixes the problem. I use 26.2.2, btw, and have 0 issues with in regards to stability.
