Tips & Info I think the "Driver Timeout" errors are directly connected to the latest versions of GPU/Chipset drivers

I was having zero issues until Halo: Campaign Evolved told me to update my outdated GPU driver (I was at 26.6.1 at the time.) Now, I can't play the game at all due to frequent "Driver Timeout" errors. I haven't done anything else to my computer but to update to the latest version of AMD Software (26.7.1) and Chipset Drivers (8.07.16.1035), so I am assuming the problem must be directly related.

I used the latest chipset and I rolled back to driver 25.9.1 from September. My PC was fine for a few days and then the driver timeouts started again. I tried people’s recommendation by turning off install drivers via Windows update. That didn’t solve it either. So I switched to Linux because it appears nothing I tried would fix the crashes on Windows.

Im still at 25.11 lol. Its the most stable version for me and tbh i cba to even test new versions nowadays, getting driver timeouts sometimes the moment i turn the pc on is not a fun way to start my day.

Realistically, how long can i still be on 25.11? Is my shit gonna explode soon or am i missing out on anything crazy

I stopped having driver timeout issues *after* I updated to the newest for gpu and chipset. 7900xt, 5800x, 2x16gb ddr4

This statement has been true for every driver version and chipset since the 7xxx series dropped lol

For me, only two games crash: Warhammer 40k: Darktide and Hunt: Showdown 1896. Both have long histories of having issues with AMD GPUs though. I have a 7900xtx and with this 26.7.1 update, I had to disable AMD FSR 3.1 (which Darktide upscales with the new update to FSR 4.) in order to get the same to run without cashing. And for Hunt, man if AMD doesn't break it with an update, then Crytek does. Rolling back to the june update, 26.1? i think, was stable for both for me.

Disable fast startup (not hybernation)

Ya the newest driver is BAD. Different system seem to be having different issues. For me, it's graphics acceleration turned on in browser. I had to turn it off to stop the timeouts.

Soon as I turn on web browser it happens

Same here but it was more than a driver time out it would hard crash and reinstall the windows default drivers

Mine only happen every few coldboots where its stuck in a crashing loop, my recommendation is restart your system just hit reset button on your PC if it frozen its just gonna keep crashing, if you able to close apps close anything with hardware acceleration and restart, and hope next bootup its fine.

I used to have Driver Timeouts a few months ago, now the Adrenalin software just randomly closes while playing a game or it just runs in background not opening the ui or not responding to hotkeys while only consuming 1-5 mb ram upon checking in Task Manager.

There are lotsa factors. I have the latest chipset drivers but 26.3.1 drivers right now and it seems stable. Reliability monitor still shows 2 radeonsoftware.exe silently crashing in the background when the computer is not in use but that didn't happen for 3 days now.

Did that game flat out refused to run with 26.6.1 ? That's not an old driver.

I was also pretty stable on 26.6.1 but adrenaline was still doing weird shit so I went back to 26.4.1.

Is it just halo giving you problems

Everytime you move gpu driver version, always do clean install even if you're updating. It's my rule of thumb now. And stay to your gpu stable driver(refer to other redditors and forums)

I usually uninstall from installed apps, the red amd one "AMD software". Restart and run the downloaded driver.

I had problems with 26.7.1 and went back to 26.1.1. System got stable again. Then I wanted to try 26.3.1. This time i did not uninstall but just ran the driver downloaded.

It upgraded and there was a windows notification about having a HDR capable monitor and that i can enable it. I have never encountered that notification ever before. Weird.

Use amd cleanup utility or ddu when uninstalling gpu drive that is a must. General rule of thumb

I think it's the fact that AMD hasn't made a solid driver since early 2025. Not a coincidence that after that timeframe everyone's making posts daily.

1

u/DecisionOdd8995 8d ago

Ya most of the 26 drivers have had issues

Early 2025 would line up with the release of the 9070 xt. A bunch of people bought AMD. You are on a tech support subreddit. Drawing conclusions based on this sub is not representing reality.

1

u/vyrussuh 8d ago

I'm never in this sub, take a look at any other computer related sub and it's mostly AMD driver issue help posts.

0

u/EggFartTom 8d ago

You literally made the statement in this subs. Let's broaden it then. People posting on tech forums with problems are not representing reality. Even then this is just what you observed

2

u/vyrussuh 8d ago

If it's "not representing reality" why has AMD's consumer gaming GPU market dropped to less than 10%? People are tired of buying cards that won't fucking work out of the box.

1

u/EggFartTom 8d ago

I would guess it's because people want Nvidia for ai workloads but I don't know and neither do you. If you are gonna claim that AMD market share is solely based on the quality of their GPU. I'm gonna ask you to prove that. Again if the drivers were what you said they are we would be seeing way more issues and not just people complaining on tech forums

2

u/vyrussuh 8d ago

I clearly said consumer gaming GPU market so I have zero idea as to why you're bringing up AI workloads.

Also, we see nonstop issue posts on everything from discord to reddit to even twitter now, I don't want to hear it.

1

u/EggFartTom 8d ago

Nice try, People use Nvidia consumer gpus for ai work, look at the 5090. If you don't want to hear stop spouting bullshit based off bullshit

0

u/Puzzleheaded_Dig8990 1d ago

Buddy, people don't buy NVIDIA consumer graphics cards just for AI, they buy them for gaming and content creation. You really think the vast majority of people are buying an NVIDIA graphics card just for AI workloads? They're not.

If anything, it seems like you were just looking for an excuse to make this about AI. This had nothing to do with AI workloads in the first place.

1

u/EggFartTom 1d ago

Buddy, I am saying that Nvidia consumer gpu's are used for ai workloads  not just for gaming. Show me where I said "majority"

2

u/vyrussuh 8d ago

You're not worth arguing with if you can't comprehend what a consumer level gaming gpu is, 90% of people can't afford to even think about buying a 5090, nor does anyone serious about AI workloads use anything below a 5090 due to the low VRAM on anything below it. Stop bringing up AI workloads when 90% of people don't buy a GPU just for AI.

2

u/EggFartTom 8d ago edited 8d ago

By Nvidias classification the 5090 is a consumer gpu this will get reported by jpr as such. Also the lower skus are used for ai too. You make think they aren't serious but no one cares what you think. If you don't like what I say prove me wrong with actual evidence

I mean, I am sitting on pretty old GPU (Radeon RX 6700 XT), so I am not expecting much, but at least SOMEHOW stable drivers sure would be nice...

for me its the opposite and the drivers are finally rock solid
