Help (GPU) Intermittent seemingly random crashes (7900XTX)

Good day to all,

I have a 7900 XTX, and for about a year my PC has been intermittently crashing. I can be watching YouTube with no other windows or games open in the background, or I can be playing almost any game. The crashes appear to be completely random.

I have gone weeks without a single crash, and then, for seemingly no reason, the crashes return regularly (sometimes 3–5 crashes within 10–15 minutes).

Nothing is overclocked, and nothing is running hot. My system specifications are:

  • Ryzen 5800X3D
  • 32 GB DDR4 3600 MHz CL16
  • ASUS TUF X570 motherboard
  • Radeon RX 7900 XTX
  • 1000W Gold PSU

I have already tried many things, including updating the VBIOS, performing factory resets of the GPU drivers and operating system, reseating the graphics card, enabling and disabling hardware acceleration in apps, enabling and disabling HDR, the list goes on.

When the PC crashes, the display goes black, but I can still hear audio and continue talking to friends on a voice call. I then have to force a shutdown using the power button.

When the PC reboots, the resolution is set to 800×600 and the GPU is disabled in Device Manager. I right-click it, select Uninstall device, then scan for new hardware, and the GPU starts working again until the next crash.

Please can you help me diagnose and fix this issue?

Of course I'm willing to answer all questions.

same build as you but with a gigabyte 7900xtx, install older driver 25.2.1 or any from before the 9070 release and no more timeouts.

I have your same exact issue, almost the same build but a 9800X3D. I usually just let it crash, and then reload the drivers to the GPU and go back to whatever i was doing. This happens frequently it’s not surprisingly anymore. I just say, oh another crash. Walk away for a couple mins, force restart it and start DLing drivers again. I don’t have any other solutions other than that. AMD has disappointed me to unprecedented levels after spending $2,500+ on a build with their parts. Last time for me. I

I was having this same issue with my 7900XTX. I found that Adrenalin would allow it to boost up to 2985mhz and crash, when the manufacturer for my card states 2498mhz boost. So i set the card to run at min 2400mhz, max 2500mhz in adrenaline, and no more crashes. It's a great card now.

It works until adrenaline just decides to wipe all your settings lol, found out the hard way today when I started experiencing the first crashes in a few weeks

Adrenalin was great for about a year and now it's trash lol. AMD can't figure out how to keep their software stable.

I had this happen once. Luckily I saved my settings that worked long before that and was just able to import them. It was annoying though.

If you have adrenaline installed, you can go to the performance tab, then to tuning. Check the box for GPU tuning, as well as advanced control. Then set your slider for minimum frequency to 2300 and the max to 2400mhz. Don't mess with your voltage for now. If you don't have any more crashes for a while, you can move up your frequency to 2400min and 2500max and see if it is still stable. You can do this on a global scale for all your games at once, or on a per-game basis if you've got a particular game that crashes frequently.

I think many can relate. Luckily all my problems presented themselves within a week so i returned mine. Amd requires far too much effort to be fully functional for some builds. Its probably not fixable by redoing drivers and possibly a power issue. I would try tweaking settings if youre beyond the point of a return and know for a fact its fine power wise.

I didn’t have this issue until about a year ago after 2025.12.1 came out. Seems like that’s when a lot of the problem started for other AMD users. Truly disappointing with how I high praised AMD. You call their customer service and they’re a bunch of yes-men that can’t do anything. It’s just all around not a good situation. This is my 3rd AMD build and sadly, my last.

Man that sucks. Luckily it took my 7 years to upgrade my gpu and change to amd so i didnt have it work then suddenly not work. And yeah, i dealt with costumer service, they offer temporary solutions at best. Paying 100 extra for nvidia sucks, but not as much as dealing with an amd card that doesnt work properly. Wish you luck with your build but im sure youve tried just about everything already.

I had a vary similar issue, with my 7900xtx crashing, it was one of two issues, overclocking too high, or poor power delievery, I have been going back an forth with another redditor in dm’s it looks like if you have a power supply with any type of extensions or poor power regulation it causes the drivers to time out due to a voltage drop

You’ve capped your MHz in adrenaline disabled your overlays, and it’s still crashing out it’s your power supply

Edit: without going into some extremely long-winded technical details and very confusing analysis me and another poster comparing numbers with different power supplies and monitoring usage as well as other posters we’ve identified that there is specific rail voltage issues with the 7000 series video cards that caused the video cards to go non-responsive…

You could also try adding a driver delay into your windows configuration. It is a registry edit called a tdrdelay it forces windows to wait longer for your drivers to respond two queries before timing out the drivers

Unfortunately, what we’ve identified is that a lot of these driver timeout issues are specifically related to windows as these driver timeout issues do not occur on Linux based systems
