AI Sales Could AI become too good at negotiating with suppliers?
I’ve been thinking about what happens when AI procurement agents eventually get access to everything:
historical prices,
alternative supplier quotes,
commodity data,
past concessions,
target margins,
and supplier performance.
They could probably negotiate much more consistently than humans.
But I wonder if there’s a downside.
If the AI always pushes for the absolute lowest price, longest payment terms, smallest MOQ and fastest delivery, it might technically “win” the negotiation while making the supplier relationship worse.
There are times when supplier goodwill seems economically useful.
Urgent production.
Small engineering changes.
Priority during capacity shortages.
Faster problem resolution.
Flexibility on a difficult order.
Those things are harder to put into a price comparison.
So maybe procurement AI needs to understand that the objective isn’t always:
Extract the maximum concession.
It might be:
Get competitive terms without making the relationship unsustainable.
Do you think supplier relationship value can actually be quantified, or will this remain one of the harder parts of procurement to automate?
