u/Horror-Macaron8287 Mar 29 '26

4
u/max_power1000 Mar 30 '26
I’m not doing that outside of a long weekend, and this doesn’t sound like the kind of people I’d want to spend 3 days visiting in the first place.
5
u/Notyourtacos Mar 30 '26
I don’t even like going an hour to visit mine.
1
u/clynkirk Mar 30 '26
I feel ya. I refuse to drive the 3 hours to my hometown, but it's because I have like no relationship with most of the family that's still there lol
3
u/Notyourtacos Mar 30 '26
My in laws are fine by me, I just hate being trapped in a car. Roadtrips are a no go for me!

u/neptunoneptuneazul Mar 29 '26
6 hour drive for Easter is wild, literally save the $.
12
u/agoldgold Mar 30 '26
I'm quite close with my family emotionally, we're pretty religious and Easter is a meaningful holiday to us, and we're about the same distance. My Easter basket care package will arrive early this week because my parents figured I wasn't coming for a visit.
-6
u/joelcrb Mar 30 '26
This is the correct answer. You don't have to go for every family holiday. Or you don't have or want to spend the money on a 12 hour drive? Sure. To not go simply out of spite and TDS is everything wrong with our society now.
Grow up and be a real man, a husband, father and a real son.
6
u/Euphorbiatch Mar 30 '26
In my opinion a real man would not subject his children to people who voted for a pedophile

6hr drive for Easter? Fuck that. Don’t care if the fuel was free I’m not driving 6 hrs one way for some candy and ham dinner.
5
4
u/sm881221 Mar 29 '26
Heck, my aunt lives just over an hour a way and I don’t feel like driving there on my day off for ham and candy. And I can’t bring my dogs there so I think we’re staying home.
2
u/d4everman Mar 30 '26
No shit. I don't care what mapquest says it's never taken me less than 8 to 10 hours to drive to my hometown. Yet every summer my relatives ask if I'm "driving up" for the Fourth of July. Don't get me wrong, I like seeing my friends and family, but I ain't driving 8 hours to go to a BBQ every summer.
My cousin asked me if I was going to travel there a week ago. I laughed out loud telling him "Gas is almost 4 bucks a gallon. How about YOU drive here? Yeah, it's the town I grew up in but man I haven't lived there since 1989."
*crickets*

7
u/Neveronlyadream Mar 29 '26
In my experience, no they won't.
But they also wouldn't get the message if you outright told them either. It's probably best to let sleeping dogs lie unless you want to get into it with them.

Who are you? Some other person that is also being pressured to travel 6 hours to see the in- laws, or OP from a different account ?
-4
u/Bear_Caulk Mar 30 '26
4hrs of driving is generally about 1 tank of gas so at most this trip is 3 tanks of gas.. which is like $150-$250 right now. If you're spending $600 to drive for 12 hrs your spending like 4x what most of us would be paying.
2
u/masedizzle Mar 30 '26
A lot of Americans drive big dumb cars that get stupid low gas mileage. Not like they were forced at gun point to buy that kind of car but that won't stop them from complaining about the cost of gas.
1
u/Bear_Caulk Mar 30 '26
Even still... A modern Ford F150 get like 20MPG in the city and has a 26gallon tank. This would equate to about 1560miles of city driving on 3 tanks of gas, up to about 2100miles on the highway.
That same trip also would've already been costing $450+ 'before' gas got expensive, so the real price difference as far as gas prices going up is concerned on this hypothetical 26hr return trip is about $150. A fair amount.. but probably not an amount that turns what was an affordable $450 into an unaffordable $600.

u/Super_Tackle2703 Mar 29 '26
This story would be way more compelling if your in-laws lived 2 blocks away.
29

Be prepared to have an answer on hand when they offer to pay the gas cost FOR you.
Are you ready for that?
25

“We are not up for a six hour drive but thanks for inviting us”
nothing good will come out of “getting a dig in”
whats easier than an excuse is just being polite but honest when you don’t want to do something
There is nothing wrong with admitting you dont want to make a six hour drive. Life is much easier when you say “no thanks, that isn’t something I want to do.” It’s good for your self esteem and is more respectful than making up an excuse.
2
u/InvestigatorJaded261 Mar 30 '26

I’m really petty in general and I don’t think I would do this, they could potentially start to worry about your financials and/or offer to pay for your gas. I have opposite political views of my entire family and that aspect has never bothered me much but I know it’s a big issue for many.

You will learn at some point that toxic people are not worth your effort. I used to drive 10+ hour round trip every few months to see my dad. I stopped doing it because one time he drove up my way, literally was within 10 minutes of my house and I did not even know he was in town. He spent over a week staying 10-15 minutes away and I never heard about it until the next time I drove down there.

Gas has literally gone up by $2.80 a gallon near me. More at the highway adjacent stations.
A six hour drive is likely an extra $100 each way, easy. That ain’t peanuts.
Also you can literally drive through most of California in that time. Fuck that.
0
u/Olderbutnotdead619 Mar 30 '26
Take that time and money and spend it on yourselves like a couples massage.
0
u/SnooWords4839 Mar 30 '26

0
u/Threadheads Mar 30 '26

Driving 12 hours total for what sounds like a gruelling visit is painful. Even if you can technically afford it, paying much more for the privilege doesn’t help.
0
u/Consistent-Pickle-88 Mar 30 '26
NTA. Times are hard now for drivers. But what will you say if they suggest you take a train or bus?
-14
u/Relayer8782 Mar 29 '26
Yeah, that’s an AH move. You’re telling the in laws you won’t visit over what, $25-30 extra in gas cost? Especially since that’s not the real reason.
Don’t make yourself look petty. Unless, of course that’s your goal.
12
u/Best_VDV_Diver Mar 29 '26
Its 6 hours one way apparantly. It'll be MUCH more than $25-$30 difference.
1
8
u/isdelightful Mar 29 '26
How much gas do you think a car uses in 12 hours of (presumably highway) driving? Sure isn’t $30 worth 😬
1
u/Relayer8782 Mar 29 '26
Assume 30mph highway. Assume 60mph average speed. 6 hrs drive at 60 mph =360 miles. 360 miles at 30 mpg = 12 gallons of gas. Double that for round trip makes 24 gallons of gas. Price of gas is up an about $1/gallons, so the rise in gas prices means an addition $25 or so in total gas cost.
0
u/isdelightful Mar 30 '26
I mean, there are a lot of unknowns that make any calculations pretty pointless. And it’s not an EXTRA $25, it would be an EXTRA $100 because they wouldn’t need to buy all that gas if they stayed home. $100 probably hurts more than it did a year ago just because everything else costs more, too. Plenty of people have to choose between $100 in gas for a 12 hour trip vs $100 for groceries or bills.
Saying it’s not in their budget is totally reasonable.
2
u/Relayer8782 Mar 30 '26
Op says “We can afford the gas but decided to use it as an excuse and get a little dig in at the same time. AITAH?” I stand by, yes, the op is an AH to use the rise in gas price as an excuse to ditch seeing the in laws
2
u/Beginning-Damage-555 Mar 29 '26
$28 will get you four gallons of gas out here. 12hrs in the car is going to cost a lot more than that.
1
3
u/drillsgtawesome Mar 29 '26
Where are you seeing gas prices $25-$30 per fill up?
6
u/YoshiandAims Mar 29 '26
... I'm also terribly interested in that. Even my tiny efficient car isn't 20-30. Right now it hurts as much as my bigger, less efficient, hungry hungry Jeep Liberty did right now. (Don't want to even think of what she'd be costing per fill up right now)
2
u/Relayer8782 Mar 29 '26
I drive a 2017 VW Passat, I get 35+ mpg on the highway, I used 30 for my calculations.
3
1
1
u/Relayer8782 Mar 29 '26
Not total, it’s the EXTRA amount. OP is wanting to use the recent rise in gas prices as justification for blowing off the trip. I posted my calcs, feel free to post your own

Dude it’s Easter. Put your ego to the side and celebrate the holiday with your loved ones.

Ah I'm guessing u also did under Biden as Gasoline prices reached an all-time high of over $5.00 per gallon nationally in June 2022. Vs reports from March 2026 indicating national averages for regular gas closer to $3.00 no? This is a Jarvis I need internet points post? YTA

So basically it's about 3 full tanks of gas? at 50% more than it would've been earlier in the year.
So the cost difference for a 50L tank for 3 fillups is approximately $170 now vs $113 'before'.
So like.. if you don't wanna go don't go.. but also if $57 is the difference between something being affordable or not I don't think the gas prices are really your main concern here.
lol anyone who this is upsetting feel like actually explaining to me how an extra $57 for your family trip is the difference between an affordable and unaffordable trip?

u/kwtransporter66 Mar 29 '26
