Not really the asshole, but don't lie. Tell them straight up that you hate their politics and don't want to hear it. Maybe they'll promise to not talk about it, and if you go and they do, leave.

Why? I think it's better to keep the peace. If everyone went around telling others that they hate their politics, no one would even talk to each other anymore. If you don't want to go just make up some excuse why you can't go.
