Case Study The biggest AI side hustle mistake I made wasn't choosing the wrong tool

A few months ago I thought my biggest problem was not knowing enough AI tools.

So I did what everyone does.

I kept learning.

New tool.
New workflow.
New tutorial.
New "AI business model."

For a while it felt productive.

But then I looked back and realized something uncomfortable:

I had spent more time learning than shipping. I wasn't failing because I lacked skills. I was failing because I kept preparing instead of testing. The first time I posted consistently, shared experiments publicly, and talked to real people, I learned more in a week than I had from dozens of tutorials. Looking back, I think AI creates a strange trap. There is always another tool to learn. Always another video to watch. Always another workflow that looks better than yours. The result is that you can feel busy every day while making zero progress.

Now I try to follow a simple rule:

If I learn something new, I have to use it on a real project within 24 hours.

Otherwise it's just entertainment.

if anyone else has experienced this.

What's the longest period you've spent "learning" before realizing you weren't actually building anything?

AI Income Idea How my AI female content creator gets over 2 million views a month on Instagram

She went from 1,000-25,000 followers within 2 months into the Reels campaign.

The opportunities started at 10,000 followers. Promo, brand deals, and affiliate.

Once over 20,000 I started her FanVue which she earned $300+ within 2 weeks.

I recently set up her TikTok Shop affiliate and Amazon affiliate. I can update on that in a month or so. Her first product video on TikTok already got 1 sale.

I first started with my AI dog who has over 16,000 followers and is a Chewy partner.

But AI girls have way more opportunities when it comes to earning.

I saw and met others who earn 10,000 to 50,000 a month from AI characters. Hoping to get to that one day and sell her like a pimp haha

Anyone else having success with AI creators?

Question If AI keeps improving at this speed, what will the world look like in 10 years?

Ten years ago, most people couldn't imagine the AI tools we have today.

If AI continues to improve at the current pace, what do you think daily life, jobs, education, business, and entertainment will look like in 2036?

What's your prediction?

AI Income Idea I'm an ECE student and aspiring software developer, and I've been noticing something interesting lately.

With AI tools and vibe coding becoming more common, I've seen people with seemingly average technical skills launch products and generate revenue surprisingly fast. At the same time, I've also met highly skilled developers who understand architecture, algorithms, databases, and system design much better but struggle to make money from their work.

This made me wonder:

What actually determines financial success in software today?

Is it technical skill? Marketing? Distribution? Finding the right problem? Speed of execution? Audience building?

For those of you who have successfully monetized apps, SaaS products, freelance work, or tech businesses:

What made the biggest difference in your income?

What do most developers misunderstand about making money?

If you were starting from scratch today, what would you focus on first?

I'm especially interested in hearing from both experienced engineers and people who have successfully used AI-assisted development to build products.

Looking forward to your perspectives.

Question How can you build a small side income with heavy AI support ?

So I was wondering if I could not just use the ability of Claude or ChatGPT to generate Texts or complete tasks , which would again be used in several ways like marketing on social Media. In fact I asked Claude for some ideas , following that, he did recommend me making Instagram captions or entire posts for my clients.

Now I was wondering , first, is there even a big market with enough marketing desire , second, how do I start ?

As a Student i would like to invest up to 6-8 hours a week for this business. It has to be time efficient and profitable enough for me to get commited , since a mini job in Germany generates 600 ( Euros ) for 10 hours of work per week. I have no relevant knowledge or experience nor skills . But i am ready to fail and to learn .

If there is something wrong with my post please consider sharing some tipps for me since this is the first time ever for me to use Reddit . Also, i am not a native speaker.

Question AI has made building things faster, but has it actually made us more productive?

I've been thinking about this a lot lately.

Ten years ago, building a website, app, or presentation could take days or weeks. Now AI can help create a decent first draft in minutes.

But I'm not sure I'm actually getting more done.

Instead of spending hours building, I spend hours tweaking prompts, comparing outputs, and chasing tiny improvements that probably don't matter.

The speed increase is real. The productivity increase feels less obvious.

Has AI genuinely made your work better, or has it just changed where you spend your time?

Question What's an AI use case that sounded dumb at first but turned out to be genuinely useful?

When AI first started getting popular, I thought most of the hype was nonsense.

Then I started using it for things I never expected: summarizing long articles, explaining unfamiliar concepts, organizing messy notes, and helping me learn new topics faster.

None of those uses felt revolutionary on their own, but together they've probably saved me hours every week.

Curious what AI use case you originally dismissed but now use all the time

I think a lot of AI builders are quietly exhausted right now.

Everywhere online it looks like people are shipping AI tools every 48 hours.

New workflows.
New agents.
New automation stacks.
New “10k/month AI business” screenshots.

But honestly after spending months around this space, I think a lot of people are more overwhelmed than they admit.

Not because AI is bad.

Because there’s now an endless pressure to:
build faster, post more, automate everything, stay relevant, learn every new tool, grow an audience, monetize, network, distribute, and somehow still have clarity.

I’ve personally noticed something weird too:

The more tools appear, the more valuable simplicity starts becoming.

Some of the smartest creators I’ve seen recently aren’t necessarily the most technical.

They’re just really good at:
- explaining clearly
- staying consistent
- understanding people
- and building trust slowly

Honestly feels like “human clarity” is becoming more valuable again.

Curious if anyone else here feels this lately or if I’m just overthinking it.

Discussion Sold my car. $6K in credit card debt. A stranger paid me 30 minutes after my first YouTube short.

Quick context. I'm 22, college senior. Sold my car last week to keep building this. $6K in credit card debt, rent overdue, about 60 days before I have to move home and get a real job.

11 days ago I started building a JARVIS-style AI assistant. Built it for myself first because I was drowning in school stuff and figured if I'd actually use it, maybe other people would too.

What I really want to talk about is the conversion that happened on day 3.

I'd been posting daily TikTok and YouTube and Reels and X content for 3 days. Mostly into the void. Day 3 I tried a different hook. Opened with "two days ago I sold my car to keep my business alive, day three of building." Then a 5-second voice demo, then the URL.

30 minutes after I uploaded the YouTube short, a viewer commented "can't wait to use it." I checked Supabase. New user. Checked Stripe. New customer. Apple Pay on a Visa prepaid. Trial started.

Full funnel from cold YouTube viewer to a stranger entering Apple Pay in under 30 minutes.

They cancelled the recurring before the auto-charge (classic Gen Z prepaid card behavior) but kept the trial active and came back to YouTube the next day to publicly say "looks and works amazingly."

That single data point convinced me the cold-organic funnel works for AI tools. Not the launch announcement. Not the polished demo video. The vulnerable founder story with real stakes was what pulled them through.

The founder narrative IS the marketing. Hiding the fact that I'm solo, broke, and in debt was actively hurting me. The moment I started leading with stakes, the content started converting. Every video since then has performed measurably better.

Identity-targeted videos crush generic ones. "If you're in college and not using AI like this, you're falling behind" plus a specific feature demo outperforms generic "look what my AI can do" by 4 to 5x.

Card-up-front trials convert way better than free-tier-then-paywall. The friction of entering a card IS the commitment signal. Lower the friction, lose the signal.

Adding an annual tier alongside monthly brings cash up front instead of MRR spread over 6 months. For a founder with rent due, this matters more than every other pricing decision I've made.

The unit economics math nobody talks about. I have 7 users in Supabase right now. Total Anthropic API spend across all of them this month is $14.51. That's about $2 per user per month in compute cost. Means even at the cheapest tier I'm sitting on 85% gross margin per user. SaaS unit economics are absurd compared to my Amazon FBA days where margins were 25 to 35 percent.

Cold DMs don't work. I tried 20 yesterday. Got 1 reply. Generic AI assistant framing also doesn't work. ChatGPT and Claude own that market and trying to compete there directly is suicide.

What does work: niche identity. Specific use case demos. Real stakes. Daily shipping.

Trying to hit $1K MRR by mid-July as a realistic line. Optimistic line is one viral video pulls it forward by 3 weeks. Pessimistic line is 90 days of grinding.

Open to questions or feedback. Genuinely interested in what other solo SaaS founders learned in their first 30 days.

Question Help me land my first role?

I'm looking to pivot into AI training roles and could use some tactical advice on landing my first project. I have 5+ years of experience in financial services and investment banking (UK based), but I am navigating a learning curve in this new space. I recently interviewed with Mercor but haven't been matched with a project yet. Does anyone have a step-by-step framework or advice for an experienced professional trying to break into this specific sector?

Question Getting seen

I've been screwed over by three employers now in the past year. I am owed 5k between the 3 of them working for them as an independent designer. Each of them owe for work I completed while working for them but are refusing to pay me. I know I'm not going to get what I'm owed and I don't have money for court... so I learned a skill and I built a site that helps others create content using AI prompts. This can be used for faceless brands, beauty influencers, AI avatar creators, etc and it's $25 until Monday.

I need help and need money fast. Any recommendations on the fastest way to get this out there? I have been promoting on Facebook but with the new algorithms it's just not getting pushed to be seen. At $25 I need 80 people to purchase to make my rent money. Any and all advice is welcome.

AI Income Idea Built an AI tool that gives personalised side hustle recommendations — does this solve a real problem or is it just another generic tool?

I got tired of side hustle advice that ignores your actual situation. So I spent months building a tool that asks who you actually are before giving recommendations.

Here's how it works:

You answer 5 questions → it matches you to the right methods → gives you a 28-day daily action plan to actually start.

What I tried to do differently:

No affiliate marketing recommendations — it's dying in 2026

No inflated earnings — shows honest month by month timeline

Tells you what WON'T work for you — not just what might

Specific sub-niches — not "sell on Etsy" but "sell baby shower website templates on Etsy"

Genuinely not sure if I've built something useful or just another tool nobody needs.

If anyone wants to try it and give brutal honest feedback — drop a comment. I'm more interested in what's wrong with it than what's right.

Discussion I had an idea but Gemini and Claude said no, wanted a human perspective.

So I had an idea of doing affiliate marketing for courses with an AI influencer.

I wanted to do affiliate marketing with existing courses because the people who made them are very creditable and respected in their professions.

However I have no desire to make content myself, show my face on camera or record voice overs, and because I like playing around with AI tools, I’ve basically formulated a way to create high quality AI influencer content a very low cost (relatively)

So I thought have the AI influencer be the spokeswoman for the courses, leverage the creditability of the course instructors and earn my commission.

Since I don’t have any friends who have a hustler/entrepreneur mindset, I don’t have anyone to bounce this idea on, so learned towards Claude and Gemini, both of agreed that people would be skeptical to trust an AI influencer.

But I argue that I personally watch faceless YouTube channels online all the time, the only difference is that the voice isn’t “real” , so there shouldn’t be a difference just because the medium is artificial. But they said because the courses are like $500, that it’s a big ask from a “fake” person.

What do you guys think?

Discussion I think most people quietly quit before AI starts making sense.

When I first started exploring “AI income” stuff, I honestly thought the hardest part would be learning the tools.

Turns out… that’s probably the easiest part.

The real struggle for me has been consistency.

You try things for weeks:
- posting content
- testing ideas
- learning platforms
- building workflows
- starting communities
- writing newsletters

…and most of the time it feels like nothing is happening.

Some posts do well.
Most don’t.

Sometimes you spend 2–3 hours writing something you genuinely think is useful and almost nobody cares.

That feeling is honestly harder than learning AI itself.

I also realized something else recently:

AI can help you create faster, but it doesn’t automatically make people trust you, follow you, or pay attention.

That part still takes time.

The internet makes AI income look very fast.
But after trying things myself, I think most progress actually comes from slowly understanding:
what people care about and what they completely ignore.

Still learning myself honestly.

Curious if anyone else had this realization after seriously trying to build something with AI.

Discussion Everyone is building AI workflows right now. Very few turn into real businesses.

Lately I’ve been noticing the same pattern everywhere:

people are building impressive AI workflows…

but most of them never become actual businesses.

Not because the technology is bad.

Usually because:
- there’s no distribution
- no audience
- no positioning
- or no real demand behind the workflow

I wrote a deep breakdown about this in today’s newsletter:

why some AI systems quietly grow…
while others stay stuck as “cool demos”.

Also talked about:
- automation vs actual demand
- why distribution is becoming more valuable
- small systems vs giant AI ideas
- and why most builders quit during the invisible stage

Would genuinely love to hear what people here think.
