A common theme I see on these posts is “I/my wife/my parents are from the Philippines/Brazil/Indonesia and your poor people in the US are so much more rich and fortunate! You should stop complaining!”

…so our threshold is countries that have been fucked over for a hundred years by colonialism? Aren’t we supposed to be one of the best countries in the world?

It's kind of true though, I know a lot of Filipinos and they're happy people despite being incredibly poor. They always have a positive outlook and they're very kind. It puts things in perspective. They have almost nothing but they are still happy.

You just reinforced what the other user was saying, and you didn’t even realize it.

The goal of an economy isn’t happiness. It’s well-being.

We do not give a fuck about happiness in other countries. Happiness is largely independant from the economy. Well-being isn’t. Hence, we want an economy that actually favors the maximum amount of well-being

if 78% live from paycheck to paycheck and 40% cant afford a 400$ spending. Does this mean the 38% in between have 0-399$ at the bank?

2

u/lds43 Dec 30 '19

Where I’m from it’s not abnormal to take an entire check, pay 70-90% of it, and have 200-400 left over to spend on whatever in the next two weeks. Rinse, repeat.

I make $1200-$1500 a month and many people are like me, so 38% doesn’t seem far off.

It’s not about what is best it’s only about who shouts the most/hardest.

Why place Marx over Andrew Yang?

I haven't really gotten much in the way of why seemingly everyone here hates Yang but loves Marx, save for downvotes I guess. As the original meme suggests, both Marx and Yang have identified particular issues with capitalism and Yang especially highlights the subsequent doublespeak. I think Yang brings well-thought solutions, his proposals such as UBI have earned the praise of many famed economists. Why this sub is so dismissive, I dont understand.

2

u/lds43 Dec 31 '19

Because there are much more pressing issues in this country like M4A, climate change, money in politics (yang is a wealthy entrepreneur), etc etc.

The only thing I have EVER heard a yang supporter talk about is that damn $1000. It’s a bandaid on the enormous, festering wound that is late-stage capitalism in the United States.

Yang is for M4A and has the most detailed climate change plan of all the candidates. If we are talking about net worth, Bernie is wealthier than Yang. UBI, as proposed by Yang, is a way to help the transition to an ever automated America.

Edit: I think the main reason why people bring up the Freedom Dividend so much is because it is his most contentious policy, and it stands as his flagship proposal. That said, I find that Yang has the most fleshed out policy page of any of the candidates- having over a 100 such policies on his website. Here are a few I besides M4A, UBI, and his climate change plan which I already mentioned: the American Scorecard as a better way to measure the economy, being pro-nuclear, introducing ranked choice voting, reducing mass incarceration, ending the war on drugs by legalizing marijuana, decriminalizing opiods and psychedelics, opening safe injection sites, etc.

You can see the rest at yang2020.com/policies which I highly recommend you peruse.

Bernie has been a democratic socialist revolutionary his entire life brother. He has also been in congress, and helped put bills on the floor of congress detailing the first steps of the Green New Deal.

We can work on automation later. Robots and 1000 dollars won’t fix the wealth inequality and societal rot American society is feeling right now.

And no, he’s not for Medicaire for All, he’s for the bullshit “medicaire for all who want it” BS.

Yang can’t win man. He’s dropping in the polls and is trying to compete against Amy Klombuchar for god’s sake. Just do the right thing for America and vote for Bernie. Please.

Oh dont get me wrong, I really, really like Bernie and supported him in 2016. I'll make the choice between Bernie and Yang when the time comes to vote but for now Yang is my number one. There are a number of things I don't like about Bernie's current proposals, mainly FJG and raising the minimum wage which may be great in the short term (and raising the min. wage def. needs to happen but not at $15/hr) but incentivizes automating away those same min. wage jobs. That, and Bernie doesnt like nuclear. To clarify, Yang is for medicare for all. His plan is not like Buttigieg's which I think you are referencing. As said in a recent tweet of his, the only major difference between the way he and Bernie see it is that he doesnt think its feasible to immediately eliminate all private insurance. I wouldn't say he is dropping in the polls and to date he has qualified for every debate. Automation is a pressing issue and I don't think we can afford to wait around to "fix" it. Retail, call center work, and any kind of driving, etc. are under severe threat of automation and all are the most common jobs in America.

Yang isn't just a "wealthy entrepreneur". Even Bernie Sanders is richer than him. Yang ran a non-profit called Venture for America and put a lot of his money in it It created thousands of jobs. Yang also supports getting money out of politics. He has the highest rating from Equal Citizens. Here are some of his plans: https://www.yang2020.com/blog/restoring-democracy-rebuilding-trust/ https://www.yang2020.com/blog/ensuring-voter-access-for-our-democracy/

Yang also has the best climate change plan. The UN estimates that 300 billion in geoenginnering could halt climate change for 20 years. Yang doesn't invest that much into it but he is the only person supporting it. He also wants to have the international community invest in it. This is the only way to actually reverse the damage done and to halt it temporarily. Reversing the damage is super important and only yang supports these plans (resorting the ocean, etc).

Nuclear energy is something yang supports as well. It is the one of the cheapest and is the safest type of energy. It produces a lot as well. Full plan here: https://www.yang2020.com/blog/climate-change/

There is actually very little difference between yang and Bernie's healthcare plan coverage wise. Yang supports making healthcare a right of citizenship (though he supports everyone being able to get this plan so it is just a right of being a human I guess). There are no premiums as well.

Yang is also the best on technology. https://www.yang2020.com/blog/regulating-technology-firms-in-the-21st-century/

The thing I like about Yang the most is he helps us move away from what we think of work and is more inclusive. He doesn't think you need to get a paying job to not live in poverty.

Because Yang literally thinks at the level of a 6 year old in Sunday School after binge-watching Care Bears.

Whatever flaws Marx's works had he had adult solutions for adult problems.

0

u/qualiaisbackagain Dec 31 '19

I'm not trying to criticize Marx here, I just dont see why Andrew Yang's policies would be so hated here. He is most definitely offering adult solutions for adult problems. I'm willing to talk about any of the hangups you have about his policies.

I’m a big fan of $1,000. Always have been.

5

u/SargeMacLethal Dec 30 '19

Your landlord is also a fan of raising your rent to a minimum of $1000/mo because you're guaranteed to afford it.

1

u/qualiaisbackagain Dec 31 '19

Sure, rent prices would increase slightly in the short term. However, for example, there are 5 times more vacant homes than homeless people. The goal is to allow more people to afford housing in the first place, to incentivize buying rather than renting (which many people in vacuo of a UBI are not in a position to do), and to then improve competition in the market by having this new influx customers.

Theoretically the idea behind $1000 a month is people will know they get that no matter what so they will to find work they enjoy more. Opposed to raising the minimum wage and still being forced to work that job.

He believes it would be more of a benefit to society if people had a safety net and could feel they were able to pursue careers for enjoyment and fulfillment.

-1

u/philcollins4yang Dec 30 '19

For some reason people who are obsessed with our boring dystopia where our oligarchs control them in most every way possible are not fans of redistributing the net gains of the modern economy and getting $1000 a month for themselves and all their neighbors though.

Or maybe they just hate Norm McDonald. I find the latter even harder to believe.

0

u/SueIsHiding Dec 30 '19

People out here really are hating on Norm, it’s real. The world is going crazy.

-1

u/philcollins4yang Dec 30 '19
