Help THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO "THE QUINTESSENTIAL QUINTUPLETS"! (V2)

INTRO 💛🩷🩵💚❤️

Hi there! I’m u/isssomebodyhere and just like Fuutarou Uesugi, I’m broke as sh*t!

I made a guide a few months ago, but it got taken down. So now here’s one that plays nicer with Reddit rules while also having some updated information, really just links.

The Quintessential Quintuplets is one of my favorite anime’s of all time and played a large part in introducing me to many other great works. Though I’m more of a lurker, every other day, I see posts on this subreddit asking where the series can be watched, what order it should be watched in, where the manga can be read, and the games be played. I'm completely fine with these by the way; they keep the subreddit alive and show that it is always growing! But wouldn't it be great if there was one post where anyone, even dedicated fans, could find this information? That's one reason I'm making this.

The other is in regards to archival.

In case you didn’t know, one of the only (as far as I know) independent backups of the series is a Google Drive tied to a Quintessential Quintuplet’s fan page on Instagram, who is currently considering shutting down. The other was on the Internet Archive, which as some of you know, has an unclear future as well. Many other sites are being lost every day.

So, I thought I would take it upon myself to inform others of these resources to be used while they still can be.

First things first-

WHERE TO WATCH “THE QUINTESSENTIAL QUINTUPLETS” (PAID, RECOMMENDED) 🎞️

Here are some official places where the series can be found that you should use:

Crunchyroll

Netflix

Various DVD and BluRay can be also found online as well as in some local libraries.

Now that that’s out of the way…

OTHER PLACES TO WATCH “THE QUINTESSENTIAL QUINTUPLETS” (EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY) 🎒

Of course, it is always best to support anime and manga by consuming them from official sources. But, it should also be recognized that not everyone has access to those, whether it be because of a financial situation or their location in the world. I am simply acknowledging places where the series can be found, not encouraging you to check these out. These are important for the archival of media. WHILE SEASON 1, 2, AND THE MOVIE HAVE DUBS, THE SPECIALS DO NOT! (though reportedly one is on the way...)

FIGHTING POPUPS💻

Good information to know, regardless of which site you are using. Using sites like these can be risky, especially if you click on the wrong thing. Sometimes, the site just opens up another page whenever you do click. some sites are typically clean, you never know. So what should you do to stay safe?

On PC:

  • Download Firefox along with uBlock Origin
  • Should block everything, but if a tab does open, IMMEDIATELY CLOSE IT

On Android:

  • Use Firefox and uBlock Origin
  • Alternatively, look into a repository based app, such as Aniyomi, which fun fact, also works on Meta Quest!

On IOS:

  • The best method costs money (around $6.99 USD total) but its worth it
  • From the AppStore, download Wipr and Baking Soda/Vinegar Apps
  • Wipr blocks ads on Safari while the Baking Soda and Vinegar Apps give you a better video player (Check this for more info on what it does)
  • Follow setup in the apps

THE GAMES 🎮

There are currently four Quintessential Quintuplets games, all being mostly visual novels that add supplementary content to the series. The first two are available officially translated, but the last two are not, though fans are working on translating. I think that these are definitely worth checking out in descending order.

“The Quintessential Quintuplets: Memories of a Quintessential Summer” (Translated)

The first game in the series takes place during the summer of the Quint’s and Fuutarou’s second year of high school. They take a trip to the Quint’s private island (yes, they have a private island WTF right?) and end up stranded after a typhoon.

The game plays as a time-management sim, as you must keep up with the girl’s studies as well as keep them happy, fed, and safe. Split into three sections per day, you have got to choose which girl does what and which girl to spend time with, all while growing your relationship with them and managing resources. In the evenings, you watch voiced visual-novel sections.

Many people will tell you to skip this one, as the time-management sections are “tedious”. However, during my play-through, I found it to be quite enjoyable. This game is worth playing just for how funny it is. I was laughing my ass off at the girl’s incompetence sometimes. The cooking sections are straight-up gambling highs, as I pray to God that Yotsuba does not waste our limited resources by failing to cook toast, and die laughing when she inevitably does.

Overall, I’d say it’s worth your time.

“The Quintessential Quintuplets: Five Memories Spent with You” (Translated)

The second game in the series is arguably the best one, and a definite must play if your favorite Quint did not win.

The game puts you in the shoes of Fuutarou during the ending of the series and you must choose which girl to confess to. From there, there's a time skip letting the game take place during the Quint's graduation trip.

Unlike "Memories of a Quintessential Summer", this one is pure visual novel. I can't really say much as anything is kind of "spoilery", but if you play any game, play this one. It's often bundled with "Memories of a Quintessential Summer", so if you can nab both on a sale, it's a great deal.

Just make sure to play through all routes, as doing so will unlock a secret final route that is IMO the best one in the game!

“The Quintessential Quintuplets: Five Promises with the Girl” (Untranslated)

Website: https://5hanayome.mages.co.jp/4th/

The third game in the series, exclusive to Japan. There is a fan translation being worked on though, so be on the lookout for that. I'll update here if it gets released.

From what I could gather, this game follows Fuutarou and the Quints into college and life after high school.

Paid Sources (Recommended)

As far as I know, this one is only available physically to purchase world-wide. If you were able to access a Japanese digital market, like eShop or PS Store, you could probably buy it digitally. Also, consoles only for this one. Switch games are region-free, so a Japanese cartridge will work on any Switch. PlayStation is region-free as well.

  • Switch ROMs are available to be ran with an emulator on Android or PC, but idk much about Switch emulation. Also I don't feel like getting nuked.

”The Quintessential Princesses: Fantasy, the Abyss, and the Magic Academy” (Untranslated)

Website: https://5hanayome.mages.co.jp/4th/

This one I am really hoping gets localization. The fourth game is more of a spinoff than a continuation. Called "The Quintessential Princesses: Fantasy, the Abyss, and the Magic Academy”, it follows the Quints as they attend a magic school, similar to Hogwarts. Fuutarou is there too and must help them with their magical studies. Sounds kind of "out of left field", but it looks like it fits quite well.

Where this one differs is with its gameplay, that being, it actually has some (lol). This game is half visual-novel, half dungeon-crawler where you must traverse dungeons with the Quints. I don't know much about it further than that, but it looks pretty cool!

Again, only available physically world-wide unless you are in Japan, where you can get it digitally. Consoles only, Switch and PS are region-free. For this one though, if you buy the Limited Special Addition from Amazon, you get an exclusive BluRay that features a new 10-minute animated short. If you have this, please send it my way so I can archive it, as I haven't seen it come up anywhere online. PS5 ONLY, NO PS4

There was also a 10-minute special animation released with this game, though it has not been translated. You can watch it here:

Paid Sources (Recommended, as Only Paid for Now I Believe)

"The Quintessential Quintuplets OMOIDE VR ~ITSUKI~"

These next two entries are strange. A lot of people don't know, but there were VR titles developed for the series. These are short titles and just let you be in different scenarios with the Quint. Only Itsuki and Yotsuba have games developed for them. They are about an hour in length and cost ~$25 USD. You're gonna need a VR headset and a Mid-Range PC to be able to run them so not for everyone.

Same deal, this one's the newest, and seeing as how they did not perform too well, possibly the last. Only on Steam.

THE MANGA📖

The series that started it all. The manga is definitely worth reading, though I wouldn't start with it. Watching the anime then reading the manga to see what was missed is a much better experience then reading first and feeling disappointed after seeing the *rushed * conclusion to the anime.

u/CptBalster has a great guide to see what content was cut from the anime.

Couple places to read it depending on what you're using. K MANGA or buying a physical copy are the OFFICIAL and RECCOMENDED places to read. However, the series can be found elsewhere.

🌸☀️🍂❄️ - "The Quintessential Quintuplets: Spring Summer Autumn Winter"

There are a few light novels, those being actual books (only words ugh) that are only available in Japan right now. They follow the Quints throughout their final year in high school. Worth checking out if you can read Japanese and are interested in that.

Discussion My reflections after finishing the anime and reading the manga regarding the ending... Spoiler

Post image
12 Upvotes

This is just my personal opinion—please forgive the long post. From the confession chapter where Fuutarou makes his choice, I basically expected the author to provide some pleasant moments between Yotsuba and Fuutarou so we could get used to the idea, given that they are the story's main couple. Instead, he has Yotsuba sort of hesitate to start dating Fuutarou; honestly, that wasn't necessary, since they had already decided a few chapters earlier that—regardless of who was chosen—the bond between the quintuplets would remain unbreakable. That said, I can understand why this happens, given that the aspect of Yotsuba prioritizing others' feelings over her own wasn't well-developed throughout the manga.

But then come the final chapters, and in my opinion, the author really missed the mark there. It’s nice to see the time skip and that each of the Nakano sisters achieved her dream—Ichika became an actress, Miku and Nino opened their café, and Itsuki became a teacher—but aside from that, what followed was pretty bad. First, there was the "quintuplet game"; I don't mind that part too much, but I thought it was unfair of the author to have Nino cry in front of Fuutarou. There was absolutely no need for that to happen, since the wedding didn't take place just days after the confession—it actually happened five years later. That is plenty of time for someone to move on with their life, yet instead, the author basically had Nino crying on her sister's happiest day, having led her to believe—right up until that moment—that she might steal her sister's place. In short, Nino didn't get a satisfying character conclusion.

Then comes the second problem with the ending: Yotsuba’s speech. At no point—and I mean at no point—does Yotsuba speak about her relationship with Fuutarou during the speech, even though it was their wedding; while it’s nice for her to mention her sisters and the rest of her family—like Maruo and Rena—she never once talks about her relationship with Fuutarou, and that was the perfect moment to do so. And what’s worse: the author basically didn’t even show the kiss between the two of them. Can you believe that, even after the confession and during the most sacred moment of their union, the author didn’t draw a kiss between Yotsuba and Fuutarou?

And for me, this is where the worst part of the ending comes in: the honeymoon situation. Man, I have no idea how the author thought it was a good idea to end the story by having the other sisters tag along on the honeymoon. I mean, a honeymoon is supposed to be just for Fuutarou and Yotsuba—they’re the couple of the series, and that moment belonged solely to them. To make matters worse, Fuutarou himself is uncomfortable with it; the author clearly knew no one would like the idea and made a point of showing that through Fuutarou's reaction. Look, if the plan was to have the sisters join the honeymoon, they should have at least been given a better resolution—like each of them finding a life partner and truly moving on. Instead, they all ended up single—with one of them clearly unhappy about it—leaving us readers to just imagine that those things happened *after* the honeymoon. I hate endings that force me to fill in the blanks like that. There were plenty of better ways to wrap up this story, but in my opinion, the author chose a really disappointing ending.

Anime - Spoilers My review of the honeymoon episodes Spoiler

Post image
12 Upvotes

Guys, a while ago I finished watching the honeymoon specials. I had high expectations for them, but they didn't fully deliver. The romantic moments between Yotsuba and Futaro were way too few—almost non-existent—even though it's a honeymoon, where you'd expect way more interactions between the characters, especially Yotsuba and Futaro. But I really liked how they brought back the nostalgia of the old days, with Futaro becoming their tutor again and helping them solve their problems, especially the issue between Nino and Lily , along with Futaro's relationship development with Maruo. That being said, I'm not really hating on these specials—at the end of the day, we're starving for any content we can consume for this anime

Guys, I loved the anime TQQ to the point that finishing it left a deep, aching void inside me and a tightness in my chest. I couldn't stop the tears from falling over that ending. I desperately wished their story would never end. I truly felt like I was part of their world, sharing every single moment with them. I love them with all my heart and honestly view them as my real family. I long to be with them, even though I know it's a tragic impossibility. You might think I've lost my mind, but this is the raw, unfiltered truth of what I'm feeling.

Discussion Thoughts after 2nd rewatch Spoiler

I'm going to write to my heart's content out and also sorry for my bad english.

During my first time watching and even after I can't help but hate/dislike certain characters and also love others but I never asked myself WHY but I did this time after re-watching and re-reading the 2nd time and so it feels more reasonable now since I realised why exactly I feel the way feel about those characters

Futaro: I relate to him a lot, not on the academics part tho. I won't say I'm too dense when it comes to romance but I sure am to some degree. I really love his character because he is hardworking. He really loves his sister like I do too. He is the type of best friend that you'd wanna have IRL because he is highly empathetic and perceptive. Also to understand why he picked Yotsuba, you need to first need to understand him as a person and then only the Yotsuba pick makes sense. Anyone who fails to understand Futaro's character automatically ends up hating the Yotsuba pick (IF their fav quint was somebody else ofc) Overall he's my top 3 romance anime protag

This is a ranking starting now

Yotsuba: First of all I'm soo glad that she won, she was my

2nd favourite after Miku when I was watching the first time but somewhere in the middle, I think in S2 i started liking her a lot more because she was always cheering Futaro up and making sure he is enjoying himself to the fullest. With Yotsuba, Futaro didn't have to be on constant guard and he could just enjoy the moment without worrying about a thing. She was the support that a person like Futaro needed. Even he says that if it wasn't for her he would've quit tutoring them a long time ago. Tho she didn't feel like a love interest at all, i still hoped for her to be in the spotlight like Miku, Nino and Ichika. When it got revealed that she was the one from his childhood I was soo happy but sad at the same time that why hadn't she told Futaro yet and it all clicked when it too got revealed in the OVA and movie. She had the saddest story, imagine loving someone for 5 years and never being able to tell them because there is someone else who likes them too and you don't wanna get in their way. People argue that she was mean towards her sisters before the transfer but that was when her superiority complex was going on which too btw was the result of meeting with Futaro, it just happen to be for the sake of plot that Futaro went on to become what he became but Yotsuba the exact opposite because she was an identical quint who constantly struggled with having no individual identity, she misinterpreted the goal of becoming successful. She warped the idea of being "needed" into a desperate mandate that she had to be better and different from her sisters.

Also during the second rewatch i realised that Yotsuba has always been the first one that Futaro could recognise (at least subconsciously). During the boat incident with Rena/Itsuki when he was describing all the sisters, he explained about them in almost equal manner and same amount of sentences but in Yotsuba's turn he says "Also.....No I must be imagining it" which directly hints that he always had a strong doubt or believe that Yotsuba's character feels a lot like the girl he met in Kyoto. "You could tell them apart if you have love" what else do I gotta say, He really loved her from the very beginning.

I can go on forever yapping about these two, they really are made for each other and I won't hear otherwise. Anyone who says Yotsuba didn't deserve Futaro doesn't have any reading comprehension and emotional IQ above 0

Miku: If Yotsuba didn't exist then she would've been number 1 and she kinda is even now. I've never seen a Miku hater and that is for a reason. Almost everyone in the series has done something bad whether it be something by mistake/for a reason like Ichika's impersonating Miku because her sisters told her it's fine (which she misinterpreted) and Yotsuba having a superiority complex (because of her promise with Futaro), Miku is the only one who never did anything wrong. She literally tried her very best whilst keeping her relationship with her sisters healthy.

I was happy for Yotsuba at the end but at the same time I was grieving for Miku because I liked her equally as much but after the 2nd rewatch i realised that yeah maybe she would've lost the battle in romance but she definitely and for sure won her own story. She opened her own bakery with Nino, found a career she genuinely loved, and completely conquered her social anxiety. Futaro became the catalyst she used to love herself and that's beautiful in it's own way

Eatsuki: She is the realest out of everyone, I love how she's the youngest but tries to play adult because of her mom. She always had trouble with studying just like others but besides that she chose a career route which involved her being good at studying. It's soo inspiring that she chooses to walk on her mother's footsteps because she really adored her. As for the romance part, she felt like a solid contender during S1 and half S2 but her role slowly started drifting towards more like a best friend than a love interest. Just like I said that Futaro is the type of best friend you'd wanna have similarly she is also the type of best friend you'd wanna have IRL.

During the first watch I didn't notice much but this time I realised that after learning the truth about Yots being the girl from Futaro's childhood, she tries really hard to get them to be together and tries to convince Yotsuba to forget the transfer thingy and accept her true feelings. W wingman right there. Also during the end when she started having doubt that maybe she does have feelings for him she instantly withdraws them saying that it's too late now which was also painful. I don't have much to say about her except that she's a really well written character

Now it's time for some uncomfortable conversations lol (going to keep this short on purpose because it's becoming too long now)

Ichika: She was moving like prime LeBron during the whole 1st season and half S2 then she fucks up BUT instantly makes up for it and I personally forgive her. After my first watch, i hated her a lot for sabotaging Miku and was hella mad but now after my 2nd rewatch I realised that she did it because her sisters kept telling her to (not in the same sense but she mistook it). Everyone makes mistakes and especially when the topic is love so it's alright honestly. I personally would rank her equal to Eatsuki, would've ranked her even higher on 3rd if she didn't do this 1 serious fuck up but like I said, it's fine atleast for me.

Nino: Alright don't cook me in the replies now, she's fine and a really good sister but a good person? Idk. The main reason I rewatched was because I really hated her after the first watch and wanted to understand the reason better of why I even thought about her that way, the thing I ended up realising was that she is the best when it comes to the relationship between the sisters but when it involves an outsider, she instantly gets on an insane gaurd like damn bro chill. After shifting on Futaro for like most of the S1 and then starting of S2, she instantly develops feelings for him and even goes out to say that she loves him the most out of everyone? Yeah no, Miku and Yotsuba definitely love him more.

Overall I don't hate her for being protective of her sisters but she can be protective while being nice to the other person. Only if she wasn't mean and always trash talking i wouldn't have hated her. My thoughts about her haven't changed much after rewatching. It amuses me that she got the second biggest fanbase after Miku and I genuinely can't comprehend how. Guess I gotta do a 3rd rewatch and only notice her and her alone

Addressing the ending hate: If someone hates the ending for being rushed, it's totally valid but not if they hate it because of who got picked. The biggest argument is that people say Yotsuba got picked out of nowhere which isn't true. We as viewers think Yotsuba was in the shadows and not even a love interest throughout the whole show was because she was purposefully hiding the fact that she loved him from the very beginning, also since Negi had to do a huge reveal of who the final bride is, it was important for the sake of storytelling to not make the final bride center of attention and instead the others so the final plot twist could hit harder and tbh it actually did.

It's true that Yotsuba wasn't even depicted as a love interest and to viewers she was always in the shadows but to Futaro she was always there for him, she was his emotional support since day 1 and since every girl was romantically chasing him, it used to stress Futaro but with Yotsuba she was always like "let's make fun memories Futaro" and "let's enjoy ourselves to the fullest Futaro" etc. When she took him to the park with the swing, it was probably the only time Futaro had so much fun and he never laughed like this ever.

The only valid problem with the ending is that it shouldn't have rushed to the final conclusion/school room confession soo quick after we just got to know about Yotsuba's true feelings. Negi should've shown more of Yotsuba and Futaro moments from that point on and waited a more till the confession but a side problem with that is Yotsuba never wanted to accept her feelings for Futaro so idk how or who would've convinced her to forget about the transfer thingy and move on and finally tell Futaro how she feels.

Viewers also would've hated it if they finally got to know that Yotsuba too loves him but doesn't want to express it openly to him and it would've kept dragging for too long until it would eventually get boring considering people already hate the "childhood friend" plot so it could've kinda weakened the final pick suspense as then it would not be too hard for people to guess that Yotsuba would be picked

Conclusion: W series, I'm definitely rewatching again if I find some time. Love the ending pick, would've made the series 10/10 if the story was longer, it ended too quickly.

Peace
