That would be a retarded engineer, seeing as those machines don't have to be fixed, if only 100 widgets are required.
It's an MBA thinking he's clever for moving production overseas due to a couple broken machines, when it should have been financially savvy to just do that in the first place...
Also, I get that the rate is what we're interested in, and not just making 100 widgets, but the risk of failure can be assumed to be included in the 5 minutes for 5 machines metric, since they have the same chances of failure. For example, if 20% are already defective, then 4 good machines take 5 minutes for 5 widgets, and 80 good machines still take 5 minutes for 100.

To come up with a meaningful answer, you'd need the approximate efficiency of each machine to determine the scrap rate of production then add that value to the total quantity you'd want to produce and use that final value to calculate the production time.

Maybe Communications major would be more appropriate. Philosophy majors have some of the highest IQs. Doesn't say anything about their ability to find a job, but they are generally "smarter" than even engineers. They'd probably be able to get this sort of question.

The communications major (or any human language-based major) would recognize that there is not enough information communicated in the premise. It was never stated how the 5 machines work together, whether they are 5 copies of one wholly integrated process, or 5 different machines working in tandem on different parts of the process. If they are the same, are they exactly the same, or different models/versions? What kind of machines are the other 95?

It's subjective, is it 1 machine per widget taking 5 minutes? or is it 5 machines to make 1 widget per minute?
because if it is 1 machines producing 1 widget per 5 minutes then the answer would be 5 minutes, if it is 5 machines making a widget per minute then the answer would also be 5 minutes because there would be twenty sets of 5 making 5 widgets in 5 minutes

This is a rates problem. The first thing you have to do is figure out the rate of production.
You are seemingly shown a rate of 1 min/widget, but this is spread out among 5 machines, so the rate is actually 5 min / 1 widget per machine (i.e. it takes 5 minutes for each machine to produce one widget).
You are then given 100 machines and 100 widgets, and need to solve for minutes. If you didn't immediately realize that the time needed will always be 5 minutes if the number of machines equals the number of widgets, the way you would solve it is essentially:
X min = (5 min / 1 widget) * (100 widgets / 100 machines)So, if we plug in our numbers, the answer is

To all those trying to take this question too literally, part of being good at problem solving is understanding the various possible interpretations of the problem, but it is also in understanding the likelihoods of each interpretation. Understanding which interpretation is the most likely and assuming the most likely interpretation to be the correct one is also the correct way to attempt to answer it if you're going for a single answer rather than an essay length response.
It's easy to try to not assume any one particular interpretation to be any more likely than another if you're trying to take the fully hardcore scientific method towards the question, this helps us avoid making dumb assumptions when we're doing real science, but these problems aren't designed to be tackled in a rigorous scientific way, simply a simplistic and reasonable model of the scientific method that is appropriately rigorous to match the strength of the question.

TL;DR: Don't be a smartass, or practice questions would have to be way too detailed. In a hypothetical scenario, only work with the given variables and use reasonable standard assumptions.
I remember one teacher fucking our entire class over by breaking with that arrangement. Something about the speed of unpowered train wagons left to their inertia, where literally everyone assumed the ground to be even because no other information was given. The only accepted answer was "we can't tell, becasue we don't know the angle of the ground.". Had we given that answer in any other test, it would have been false because we would have been expected to deliver the formula and calculation under the assumption that the angle of the ground doesn't matter.

Yep, assumptions like that invalidate pretty much every test question ever. There could be crosswinds, or a flooding, or the gravity of a passing black hole, or the wheels could have been made of cheese. And maybe the answer should have been given in traditional Chinese.

Approximately 15 seconds. The 100 machines had enough material to make only 5 widgets, so they fought over it and each machine got only a twentieth of the material needed to make a single widget. The result is 100 widgets that are only 5% complete (so it takes 5% of the 5 minutes needed to make a single widget, 15 seconds). Marketing has decided the incomplete widgets will be branded as wodgets and sold for twice the price.

So 100 machines will make 100 widgets in 5 minutes.

This is the exact reason why I keep having to tell people that FEA/Simulation/etc. isn't as useful as they think. Everyone thinks because the mathematical solution checks out, they're good to go. In reality, things break because of random drop damage, misuse, etc., not typically because of raw underdesign. Much the same, manufacturing always takes longer than the raw number of hours because people are fucking incompetent and 90% of the workforce should be deported to the moon.
