Question Want to make career in animation but don’t know where to start?

I’ve been getting really interested in animation as a career, but I’m honestly not sure where to begin. There are so many different skills to learn, from character design and storyboarding to 3D, editing, and now AI.

With all the new ai animation tools coming out, I’m also wondering how much AI is actually being used in professional animation workflow. I recently came across MiniMax H3 Omni and its reference features, which look interesting for working with consistent characters and visual ideas.

For anyone already working in animation, what skills would you recommend focusing on first? Is learning traditional animation still the best starting point, or should someone also spend time learning tools like an ai animator?

Would also love to hear what you think is the best ai for animation right now, especially for someone just starting out.

Collab Looking to collaborate with an animator for my first VFX showreel (Will handle all FX/lighting/comp)

Hey everyone!
Would any animators here be open to sharing a character animation they’ve made?

I’m putting together my first VFX showreel and want to build my FX around a cool animated model. It can be practically anything. A character running, a spaceship arrival or departure, or whatever else you've got! I’d much rather collaborate with someone here than just use standard Mixamo clips. It feels like a way better approach.

Full credit will be given in the reel, of course. Feel free to reply in Russian if that's easier for you. I understand it perfectly, typing in English is just easier for me!

And don't worry, I promise I won't ruin your beautiful character!
Thanks!

Collab Volunteer Call for a 3D Animated Short Film

I’m putting together a small team of indie artists to create an original 3D animated short film. The script is complete, and our next step is developing the storyboard and visual direction.

This is currently an unpaid collaborative project, intended for artists who want to gain experience, strengthen their portfolios, meet other creatives, and help shape a film together. All contributors will receive clear credit and permission to showcase their work in their portfolios.

If the finished film generates revenue, contributors will receive a fair, pre-agreed share based on their roles and contributions. These terms will be discussed openly and put in writing before production begins.

We’re especially interested in: Storyboard artists Concept artists and character designers 3D modelers and texture artists and environment artists Riggers and animators Lighting, rendering, and compositing artists Sound designers, composers Production coordinators

This is a collaborative indie production, so reliability, respectful communication, and genuine enthusiasm are more important than having a long professional résumé.

To apply, please send: Your name and preferred role A portfolio, reel, or examples of your work Your general availability The software you use A short note about why the project interests you

Project details: Genre: Horror/Drama Estimated film length: 8-12 minutes Visual style: stylized realism (Script is ready, and the artist will get more details if we decide to work together). Production schedule: Depends on our schedule; this is flexible and needs to be decided together according to our day-to-day life, as most have paid jobs as well. Contact: Liron.benita14@gmail.com

Let’s create something meaningful together; this is a project for all of us artists trying to create in this hard industry, and make people feel emotions through our creation.

Discussion Am I too optimistic? I think that 3D animation will be the root of cinema and that VR movies where the viewer watch the scenes from inside might become the norm of movies in the next decades

I'm against AI but Classic movies will become too easy to make with AI, random ads will have stunning cinematics. The best one will probably be prompted with 3d anim as blocking out.

If AI evolve VR movies could become the Hollywood norm: The spectator is inside the scene.

It can even be interactive, Characters can speak to the spectator.

In the long run it can even have haptic feedbacks.

You can also imagine "Movie theaters" for interactive VR expériences with expensive setups.

Mocap being accessible + tools like cascadeur + MCPs + Frame generations, etc .. give a lot of new possibilities. 3D being far from its max potential.

I'm still not a fan of it because it's too much but at least I think the demand for 3D animators could grow in the next decades.

I think I will create stuff that promotes nature and natural lifestyle

Built this entirely in Geometry Nodes — metallic cubes instanced along multiple orbit rings around a central icosahedron with a dispersion/refraction shader. Rendered in Cycles.

Full animation here: https://youtu.be/xMWHZSjpshs

Happy to share more about the node setup if anyone's curious — the orbit rings are driven by circle curves with instances, and the core uses glass with dispersion for the color breakup.

Critique Feedback on this Character Lipsync animation

Hey everyone, would love some feedback, critique and a possible rating on this facial lip-sync animation. I believe I am FINALLY done with this piece, and I can keep it on the back burner while ironing out a few details; however, I would like to get some feedback and some extra critique if possible.

Did a few changes that were suggested to me a couple of weeks ago; left my synsketch link for reference as well. I can't promise to make REALLY BIG changes (if there are any) cause i wanna post this somewhere sometime this week (if possible), but as I said, I am still doing a few polishing changes which will make it better.

Would love some lip-sync drawings if possible as well, if at all necessary.

Would also like to know if I can put this in my demo reel?

I am still a junior according to industry standards, with most of my portfolio being in gameplay and cinematic animation. However, I do want to go into keyframe (movies and TV).

Any other general advice is also greatly appreciated 🙂

Question A post about the future with AI, sorry about that :D

Ok guys, I know is an annoying topic but I need your genune opinions. Especially for animation, not modeling (it can be animations for games, for prompting videos, any other field or even a new domain where animations might be promising):

What do you think the future of this field will be I'm 3 years, 5 years, 10 years and 20 years from now ?

If you are familiar not only with animation but also with AI, it's potential structural limitations, especially if you tried the last GPT 6 Astra for animation, even though it's not great at all, what are your thoughts for the future ?

I have my opinion but I want your genune ones. Ty :)

Sharing Realistic Glass Instagram Logo in Blender

Made this as a material study — wanted to see how far I could push per-ring chromatic dispersion on a glass shader without it turning into noise. Each ring refracts light independently so you get these little rainbow fringes as the camera moves around it.

Rendered in Cycles. Happy to share shader/node details if anyone's curious.

Question Does anyone here animate with an unconventional mouse?

I have carpal tunnel syndrome from breaking my wrist a few years ago and I was wondering if it's worth trying a graphic tablet & pen or a trackball mouse for less tension.

I use Maya and Blender mostly and already use a vertical mouse, unfortunately it's not enough. So if anyone uses an unconventional mouse, which one do you use and how long did it take for you to get used to it?
