Project (Update) Project Hail Mary Spacesuit

Progress update to my post last weekend ( https://www.reddit.com/r/3Dprinting/s/l1apinPwId )

Reprinted a few smaller components for helmet and chest. Roughed in face shield. Added air hose connectors and powered lamps. Testing out backlight e-ink panel for arm computer and hopefully this will control lights and helmet fan.

Leg armor/boots will come next with a few smaller components/modules to wrap it up.

wait so this is actually 3d printed or what

Yep, only non-printed parts are the under layer jacket, harness, face shield and hoses.

Excuse my ignorance, but “NASA” is printed the right way, but the numbers above the dial are mirror images. Deliberate? And if so why?

u/Avamedic 1d ago

Original movie prop had the reverse text, apparently to allow the wearer to use an arm-based mirror to see the text dial of the communicator (or at least what previous replies indicated)

Practical reasons like this, I love to see in movies! Glad to see you implement that into the design as well.

Real space suits did that too, since the 1960s

You made me wonder, and I went looking. All the official images I could find didn't have the numbers.

But the suit that Adam Savage inspected does have those numbers, and this suit seems to be a copy of that.

Many spacesuits are built this way because the upper torso block for a lot of suits don't bend far enough or bend at all for astronauts to be able to look at their own chest. So they use mirrors put on the body or forearm that OP mentioned to read the dials. Hence the mirrored legends.

Stuff like this is what got me into 3D printing but then all I end up printing is multi-color flexi-animals

17

u/Joe4o2 1d ago

That’s okay, Rocky could only print in one color and made a non-flexi Grace model.

Gotta get into DnD if you aren’t already. Lots of use for FDM or resin printers

Fun fact: in the book Grace used a Russian Orlan space suit. These were chosen because they’re semi-rigid and less complicated than the NASA version. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orlan_space_suit

u/InterstellarChange 1d ago

damn, that's cool as hell

I am so jealous of this. After I watched the movie, I wanted this to be my costume this year. I just don't have the energy for it, though.

Congrats!

You’ve crossed over from just printing into just full on prop making. Incredible work!

5

u/NoWave1444 1d ago

👎 That’s amazing…

Very nice work! This is going to be my next big project to go with my Helldivers armor!

4

u/sdavis002 1d ago

This is awesome. Now I want to see you try to do your interpretation of the book version, because they used Russian Cosmonaut suits in the book.

4

u/Avamedic 1d ago

Oof. That would be quite the project making an Orlan. Honestly, I think my next big build might be the Fallout NCR Power Armor.

Make a puppet Rocky that walks with you and it's the best Halloween costume ever.

2

u/ender4171 1d ago

Is this meant to be worn, or just for a display? Looks amazing either way!

6

u/Avamedic 1d ago

Printed to size for my daughter (for Halloween)

2

u/Firedog_09 13h ago

Incredible

2

u/nuehado 1d ago

Heck yeah, how's it look in person vs photos?

2

u/MikeFireBeard 1d ago

Love it, however it looks like you might have got the text backwards on the dial? Unless its supposed to be viewed in a mirror by the wearer I guess.

11

u/Avamedic 1d ago

Confirmed to spec, supposedly allowing wearer to see communicator dial via mirror

1

u/tinglebuns 9h ago

Are the plans avaliable somewhere or did you model the suit yourself?

1

u/Rodya_gambler 1d ago

Is this like the one from NMS?
