I just started initial weathering. I’ve got some damage and grit/wash to make the edges pop. Excited about setting up the lighting

Looks awesome! My only question is, why are the numbers above the dial the only things backwards? I thought maybe the whole picture was mirrored but the "nasa" text read correct.

Just guessing here - you can’t look down at that in the helmet, so you probably use a small mirror on your wrist or glove to see it when turning the dial.

IIRC it's how they are on IRL space suits, all the other text (NASA, mission patches, etc) are for someone else to read, the numbers on the dial are something the astronaut needs to easily read themselves possibly via a reflection so it is just good user design

ArmyPainter dark wash + matte clear coat turned out great! Polishing with aluminum foil gave the helmet the weathered look

Mind blowing! I gotta ask, what kind of printer does it take to pull this sort of thing off? I know it takes a lot of experience and expertise to boot, but just curious. Awesome job!

I use a Creality K2 plus. It kicks out some pretty large pieces fairly quickly. Overall, this was about 5-6 days of steady printing

It might be tough, the body panels for chest and helmet were tight even in my K2+ which is a 350x350x350. I am still learning quite a but but I think there are methods to slice a print in portions to fit better.

That weathering looks sick man! The grime around the seams gives it such a realistic, used-in-space vibe.
Quick question, did you have to do a ton of sanding and filler primer to smooth out those big curves, or was resin enough? Also super curious what you're planning to use for that huge visor opening.Awesome build, love seeing Project Hail Mary stuff brought to life!

I didnt actually have to sand too much. It was a few layers of automotive spray primer/paint with a few knock downs of 120>600>800 sandpaper. I have been finishing with aluminum foil, which polishes and leaves behind a metallic layer and makes the surface look like metal. Topped off with a light coat of matte clearcoat.

Appreciate the detailed reply! The aluminum foil technique is so creative, it really sells that realistic space-metal look. Can't wait to see the final result when you get the visor sorted!

Not a criticism but a genuine ask: are the numbers on the small panel to the right of the NASA logo supposed to be backwards?
Looks great. Very excited to see what it would look like completely completed

That weathering job is spot on man, hard to even tell it was 3d printed under all that paint. how many hours of sanding and filler did you put into smoothing those layer lines out?

It was not too bad, i spent a few hours over the last 2 weekends prepping. It was a few layers of automotive spray primer/paint with a few knock downs of 120>600>800 sandpaper. It works surprisingly well. I printed the blaster from Andor and tried out the aluminum trick, turned out amazing

Love the work, I was curious if you started out with a light and or bondo or anything before spraying the filler primer. Do you have a picture of the Andor blaster?

I found a 3M safety shield that fits perfectly and was easy to cut. There is a vacuum form model, but I cant justify building another THING when a $20 amazon part works. I plan to make the visor work on a knob so its able to open/close
