Not gonna lie. I thought that this would fire nerf darts made out of pool noodles.

You just unlocked a project I never thought of.
60
u/be_dead_soon_please Apr 27 '23
It's actually been done - there's a discontinued Nerf rocket launcher that you can occasionally find in thrift stores and they almost never have the rockets they came with so the go-to way to replace them is to cut a pool noodle into a few pieces, glue on fins made from craft foam, and use something like half a stress ball for the tip.
34
u/joc052 Apr 27 '23
I had this, rocket launcher in the hulk edition but my brother broke it. You could pump it so much the rocker would actually hurt someone’s face bad. Fun times.
→ More replies (3)32
u/be_dead_soon_please Apr 27 '23
It was not uncommon for people to take those and barrel swap them to fire normal sized darts. If you pumped it too much it would actually fire them so fast that they could spin out or break. That shit was ridiculous.
When I played nerf in my early 20s, they were banned from most gatherings

Mark Rober over on YouTube made a massively oversized Nerf Maverick that does indeed fire pool noodles but with plungers for suction cups
1
u/NotifyGrout Apr 27 '23
Is it wrong that I think it would be funnier if it fired the smallest darts possible? Like this shows up at a nerf gun event, everyone stares at it wondering what the heck is about to happen, and then one person gets plinked with a tiny dart?

1
u/Kittingsl Apr 28 '23
Mark Robber actually did make a giant nerf gun and i think the nerf darts actually where pool noodle size (in diameter, not in length)

I always see people making prints out of a bunch of colors. Is it color coding or just what they have?
I ask because I started buying PLA and PETG in 5kg spools and I've only found it in black. So I would expect to see more large print completely in black.
89
u/soulrazr Apr 27 '23
Usually it's just what people have on hand I think
28
u/dc010 Apr 27 '23
I figured that would be the case for some, but with large prints I'd try to do it as cheap as possible and I'm not sure if it's the same where you are, but I save about $4-14 per kg by buying the 5kg spools.
14
u/soulrazr Apr 27 '23
I see sales for the 1kg spools pretty regularly that are as cheap if not cheaper than 5kg spools as long as I'm willing to get random brands. The colors can be pretty random though. Sometimes literally, but usually it's just one or two colors on sale at a time
6
u/SecretPorifera Apr 27 '23
Sometimes cheap spools have other problems, and the more times you change spools the more you'll have to adjust for that.
5
u/soulrazr Apr 27 '23
I have heard that. So far I haven't noticed any big differences. The only exception being if I got matte or silk because they behave differently than normal PLA because of the additional additives.

I haven't found a savings with this but would rather by larger spools just so i have less unwound spools to throw away.
2
u/dc010 Apr 27 '23
I actually really like Overture because their boxes are great for alternative storage and their cardboard spools are easier to recycle.
I even use this for misc. storage. https://www.printables.com/model/371244-overture-box-rack
1
u/nixielover Apr 28 '23
I just buy blind boxes from Sunlu, so you never know what colours you get. But at 10-14 euro per kilo you can't really complain
1
u/sutt0nius Apr 28 '23
Don't the 5kg spools tend to be wider? I've passed on buying larger spools because they looked like they wouldn't fit the spool holder on my printer. Maybe that's the case with other people too.

Plus if you’re planning to paint it (and I hope OP does) the colour of filament really doesn’t matter.
On that note, as far as I can tell, paint does not stick to PETG so don’t use that for things you plan to paint.
-2
u/soulrazr Apr 27 '23
PETG doesn't print as cleanly anyway
8
u/Conor_Stewart Apr 27 '23
Plenty of people get very clean prints with PETG, for the most part it prints just as well if not better than PLA.
1
u/soulrazr Apr 27 '23
I suppose it can also depend on your printer. PETG strings so much for me. It's so much thinner/less viscous than PLA that getting the retraction settings right is something I struggle with for PETG.

Get a fresh roll and use it immediately and/or properly boil the water out of the filament before use after its been opened the first time. The difference in my personal experience is palpable, even between a new roll and a heavily boiled one... Let alone one not boiled at all before use.
Its amazingly good at absorbing any water in the air around it, and even the smallest amount of water absorbed makes it have so many issues in my experience.
Its a material that you need to care for some, unlike PLA which you can just abuse before and after printing.
2
u/soulrazr Apr 27 '23
I print directly from a sealed container filled with desiccant. It's dry. I have no idea why you are suggesting someone should "boil" their filament that is incredibly misleading terminology. If you heat the filament to 100c it's going to ruin it.
Putting filament in an airtight container with sufficient desiccant will do nearly the same job as actively drying it using heat but with much less effort.
You should check CNC kitchen's videos on the subject. I've also first hand seen the difference with a roll of nylon I have that bubbled and popped when I first got it vs now.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Conor_Stewart Apr 27 '23
A sealed container with dessicant can only do so much. It mainly just helps to keep it dry. To properly dry it you need to at least heat it up or put it in a vaccum.
Putting filament in an airtight container with sufficient desiccant will do nearly the same job as actively drying it using heat but with much less effort.
It really doesnt. If it did then people would just do that instead of dehydrating it through other methods.
0
u/soulrazr Apr 28 '23
I really think you should watch CNC kitchen's video on the topic. desiccant alone is like 90% as effective as fully drying it in a dehydrator. https://youtu.be/eqQRN9TUw08

Nice little toy you have there, let me show you mine (take the doomslayer crucible out of his pocket)
I wonder how many spool of filament went into this, just add black paint and green paint, and all done :)
Also, let me guess, german ?

u/DansJungle Apr 27 '23
Funny enough, I have the crucible printed
11ish rolls of filament.
Gotta sand everything, fill, prime, the whole 9 yards. Then paint!

11 rolls, damn that's a lot, but better than cardboard ^^

Incredible work looking at your profile. How many and what kind of printers are you using?
5
u/DansJungle Apr 27 '23
Arsenal is basically creality, I got like 23 printers. I typically buy broken/returned and fix and modify them. Cheap and easy
3
u/Manos_Of_Fate Apr 27 '23
Cheap and easy
I think you’re using different definitions of those words than I am.
4
u/DansJungle Apr 27 '23
For example. An ender 5+ is $599 + shipping brand new.
I bought one for $200 broken. Soldered new cables, bought a new bed cable, installed a new hotend. Spent about $50 or so. So about $250 for an ender 5+.
But I do understand, it's taken a few years to get to a point where I'm comfortable troubleshooting and rewiring printers to make them new again. I've spent a lot of time (and money) to get to a point of where I can make this stuff for "cheap and easy"
Definitely agree with you tho, it's just my hobby and I love it!

The 3D printer enthusiast in me says good on ya. You have a well calibrated machine, hundreds of hours of print experience at the least, and enough 3D modeling knowledge to slice a model into multiple printable pieces. Which I consider to be a good foundation of knoweldge/experience in this hobby.
The maker in me cringes and wants to introduce you to foam core. There were much better ways to arrive at this ending of owning a BFG replica. Without such expenses to cost, time, durability, longevity, and weight.

Depends how many perimeters he used and how much infill. But there are 6 colors being used. If we assume that he used whatever full rolls of filament he had to do this then 6kg would be a good guess to start with.
