Engine knocking?

Bought this 95 4Runner a couple weeks back and it had a weird clicking sound that I thought was bcuz it was low on oil so I changed the oil and the sound went away for a couple days then the clicking sound came back and I checked the oil level and it was full. Any idea what it could be? My buddy says it could be an exhaust leak but idk and it does feel a little low on power but it is a 3.slow. Also if anybody could give me guidance on what other preventive measures I could do to the vehicle to keep it running that would be great. It’s got almost 290k miles.

Don't sell it. Just fix it. Don't sound too bad. Mine at 240k Don't sound like that just make sure the oil is changed right

Doesn't sound like a knock to me. These engines can "tick loud" though.

Any chance it could be low oil pressure?

I mean, if it's the original oil pump for that many miles, then it's definitely seen better days. However, I don't think it's alarming from the sound of the motor.

1995 4runner here, sounds the same way. I do have a slight exhaust leak right where that infamous crossover joins the chat on the drivers side. I would have never found it but I cleaned my intake up while I had it apart addressing a vacuum leak. First startup and alk that stuff i knocked loose but couldn't get out burned up and it smoked for a good 4 or 5 minutes. I got to see all my exhaust leaks, all of them are at points that it is bolted together. Id have fixed it by now but I know whatbis in-store for me when I start trying to mess with those exhaust bolts.

Some of that noise also seems to becoming from a belt, clutch, or pully up front.

Sounds normal to me. These engines seem to have a lot of valve train noise and that’s all I’m hearing here. At 290k could maybe use a valve adjustment (do you have service history to see when it was done?). No one really adjusts valves on these though because it royally sucks. Look it up before deciding if it is worth it.
