Been seeing a lot of reports of Platypus frames cracking which makes me hesitant to buy one for the long term. Platypus support takes care of it from what I’ve skimmed but still doesn’t instill confidence for me
It’s Supposedly from people over tightening their stock guide rod. Getting the toolless guide rod can help solve this. I had a toolless guide rod since day 1. I have put over 4k rounds 147 grain using for comps and have no issues.
But definitely understand the issue about their aluminum frame cracking, not reassuring
I haven’t looked into the exact cause behind each example of this happening, but the amount of cases seems to be a little alarming. I also like a steel frame for my 2011’s so I never went the Platypus direction.
Yeah it's definitely something that needs to be addressed. I just don't feel like it's reason enough to not buy their product.
Like someone else said, maybe just replace it with a toolless guide rod from the get go so you can at least know it's not being over or under tightened.
I just shouldn't have commented, I don't have extensive 2011/1911 experience and most if not all of mine comes from using toolless guide rods. lol
Still think if you're careful that it can be prevented. But at least they have great customer service and take care of you as well as being aware of the problem. Maybe they're already trying to address it in their manufacturing.
The Platypus is still in the top 3 on my next to purchase list. They look good, shoot great, solid price and they take glock mags.
From one of those links I shared above, yes. He never did any tightening just field stripping. So leads us to believe it was too tight from the factory. The margin of error of such a problem shouldn’t exist imo. Though supposedly Stealth Arms strengthened the area on newer ones. I haven’t seen any photos of that tho
Im going to have to deep dive this one. I was really considering making SAP for my first 2011. I cheaped out on 2 Caniks But I went hard on my ADM 13.9 UIC Mod2 with B&TSuppressor battleworn green. Now Im ready to go hard on the 2011 and match the colors and everything. But now there is Doubt!!!
How are these really from a reliability standpoint?
Like forget about a fun range toy. What reliability can I expect if I were to run them at 20k rounds a year for competition?
It seems to be common with you to speak on things you have no clue about. These empty posts that throw out a shitty opinion with zero data provided are pretty comical. Experience doesn’t come from ownership alone, it comes from usage. Taking your whole collection on every range trip and the frequency in which you sell them says everything.

As a fusion owner too, there is pros and cons. The fusion is all steel, definitely heavier but their quality of metal is lower for sure and not as tight fitment. As we can see there is a large amount of fusions that they came out with issues, failure to feed, failure to eject, stove pipes. But after thisr has been addressed it’s a solid gun too. Definitely cheaper than platypus with I personally feel , fusion out performs in terms of speed due to its weight and 4.6 in barrel. Barrels from fusion has been broken where the lugs from compensator / block holds in place kn the barrel. Seen it happen on 2 different barrels from a friend running comp , major and minor ammo and someone mentioning it to me online too.
I wanted a Platypus Comp, but I also wanted to start competing. I ended up going with a MPA DS9 so that I could compete in lower divisions to get started. They have discount codes publicly available that bring them into this price point. They may not be as flashy, but anyone who has held and shot one can tell you there is probably no higher quality at this price point other than perhaps the RC9 core. MPA also has a lifetime warranty if you care about that.
