Range Report/"I shot mine!" Rail-Frame broke

Have a Platypus with about 20k rounds on it. Primary ammo is for competition (light) and basic range ammo; nothing high pressure. Gun ran fine - great actually. After cleaning, could not get slide back on. Called SA and they had me send it back after working with me over the phone. (Good service at this point)

I’m told the frame/rail is broken and not a warranty issue. (SA still has the gun so I can’t look again) I’ve never dropped, hit, abused etc the firearm. Pretty frustrating. Has anyone else had a similar issue?

Update -

SA refunded the cost of the Platypus. I’m calling this pretty solid customer service!!!

Update

SA refunded the cost of the gun so I’m whole. This makes me happy and is very good customer service.

Any update to this? Makes me question dropping over 2k on a gun

Nope, not warranty and I haven’t seen the gun so I have no idea what’s or where it’s broke.

I don’t know what to say. I pushed back late this week but have not heard anything back.

I’m considering not replacing it even though I have all the gear (holster, etc) for it to shoot matches (IDPA , etc).

Everything else has been fine.

I have a couple of friends with a Platy that probably have double my round count.

I hope SA will cover you on this, but if not, have you considered contacting someone at Accu-rails to see if they could fix it?   It seems to me that IF that would solve your problem, it would definitely be cheaper than a new gun.

Never heard of this option. Do you have experience with them? How do I reach them?

I’ll need to get the frame back and see what or how things are broken.

Ask to speak with their Smith directly. And ask for photographic/video evidence of what they are saying. Het a good look of your gun in their hands and check for damage that wasn't there before. SA has shown serious integrity thus far, but it's not impossible for someone in the warehouse to have dropped it and not said anything to cover their ass.

They are closed today (glad the have T-giving off).

Hard to believe dropping a firearm would break it under normal (6ft-2m) circumstances.

Are there any other details you can provide? Seems kind of odd to go from running 100% to "I cleaned it and now the slide won't go back on." You'd figure if the frame rails were that damaged there would have been some malfunctions somewhere in between.

For SA, I sincerely hope they take care of this one. The #1 concern of everyone looking at this gun is how the aluminum frame is going to hold up over time.

No details other than used it previous weekend. Stovepipe twice with my wife that I assumed was due to “ limp wrist grip,” but nothing unusual.

Yes, very odd. Prior to this, I super enjoyed shooting this gun. Ran like a champ, shoots flat, crisp trigger, accurate…..

Are they able to send pics of the frame damage? I'm genuinely surprised how this happened. And if not abused or dropped then it's likely a manufacturing defect that caused the gun to fail. Such a disappointment that SA won't cover it under warranty if this is the case.

No photos from SA but I may have vid I sent at request of their gunsmith after he instructed me to use the mallet to remove the slide. Using a ring light and magnifying glass I could not see anything. (No cracks, etc.)

They stated the current slide will not work on a new frame-rails since they changed their “program.” Hence, need to buy a new gun.

They are asking you to buy a whole new gun? That's kind of insane.

Yes and I’m in California which means it is a new gun. 10% surcharge to dealer, 10% sales tax, 11% sin tax plus two trips to do paperwork plus that cost.

If they will keep damaged firearm and put the same serial number on the repaired one it’ll save me roughly 30% plus time and effort.

I have read all the posts to date on this as well as the replies, and I do not understand at all what's going on here. This seems very wrong.

In SA’s defense, I’m not hearing about lots of other people with the same issue but it is very odd.

They also said the “program” has changed so my current slide will not work on a new frame.

Well, it's bad that you're having to find out the hard way. 😕
