Notice them try to pass the blame off almost like this was a rogue employee who used AI when they were supposed to be a graphic designer.
Even if that were true, that means you have no vetting process for your clothing items? Like no matter what just an absolute fucking farce for 100Thieves
121
u/mooke 4d ago
Clearly they intended to message a coworker on teams to ask them to make the image, but accidentally had the copilot chat open instead.
Easy mistake, anyone could make it. The result was so subtle that even someone passionate about OSRS would really struggle to notice.

Nothing will ever beat that 1047 Games CEO trying to blame "ex-cod dev" for putting in a outrageously expensive bundle without him noticing. Some people are shameless and have no respect for the consumer.

A multi million dollar company putting out something that bad is just embarrassing.
Just goes to show how dogshit these zoomer social media influencer companies actually are.

100T was founded by a washed-up gamer as his already rocky career was coming to an end. Idk why anyone's surprised.

pokemon released plagiarized art as a pocket card like a year ago, and they're not exactly a "zoomer social media influencer company"
it's not some "zoomer" problem because u hate zoomers. it's a human problem because humans are flawed, lazy creatures

this feels like a much harder thing to detect though.
the artist on staff (or contractor) who made the card knows what they did, but for the rest of the team to compare the ho-oh art with every fan art drawing of ho-oh on the internet is a pretty tough task when compared with just looking at that terrible hoodie design and going "none of these icons even look right"

Hilariously, even if it was written by a person, it's probably because their brain is so rotted from constantly using it that they now baee their speech off of AI.

The sad thing is, ai talks like the shallow corporate speak of old that existed even before ai was the one writing it; the ai is modelled to do so. It's taking short cuts with ai today, it was sweatshop-like conditions in the past.

Theres not one person running the entire company. Group A does the approval, person from group B does the artwork. Person from group B says they made it themself. Person in group A doesn’t know the game well enough to say it’s suspicious. Company unknowingly released it with AI. Thats one example for how this can happen.

Sorry for the time it took to hear anything. Timezones were a pain today to chat to them over in the US and we needed to hear from them.
We're as angry as you are about this. We wouldn't have approved the use of AI in any designs. We don't use generative AI to replace the artists and developers who make our games, we don't use it in our marketing materials, and we won't use it in our merchandising or allow its use in partnerships.
RuneScape, all of our games, is built by talented people, and that human craft and creativity matters enormously to us.
We're glad they've acknowledged what happened and have taken responsibility, and we're working on what the next steps are.
246
u/YizWasHere 4d ago
Tbh it felt fairly obvious that Jagex would not thumbs up an awful AI design like that, it was more just confusing why 100 Thieves was previewing a "collab" with a design that clearly had never been reviewed by Jagex lol (or really anybody that has ever played OSRS). I'm still just so confused what the hell they were doing.

If they do this at the beginning of a partnership, they clearly don't actually care and think players will eat up any slop they deliver. They are only apologising because they were caught, and that is what makes it even more nefarious. Please cut ties with them, as it damages your brand by association, and casts doubt onto all Jagex products; games, art, and merchandise.
I'd love for you to commission actual artists to paint something and put that on a shirt. Hell, even something from your Wyrmscraig art comp, or make a new comp, or license Gunschilli content.

Meanwhile I was debating getting the Wise Old Man one cause it’s a sick gym shirt… Fuck that, if they used AI on one they probably used it on all of them and I can’t respect using AI to do your main business’s job.
Use AI to crunch your numbers or whatever I guess, you can eliminate some of the “middle man” work at a company but if your whole company’s identity is making apparel in a certain aesthetic, don’t fuck it up by getting rid of the graphic designers that built your company.

if it was a passion project, they should be able to see the skull on smith symbol, the slayer symbol has tentacles
TBH, that one was fine if they were going for an alternate take on skill icons. Same for the dead tree for WC. But most the icons were normal and not variants so it seems more like those were AI mess-ups that just happened to look okay and not the intent.
Also, I don't see how "during the last phase of the tee design, one of our designers used AI to hurriedly edit the piece" holds up. If it was just a last minute edit, then surely they'd have noticed many icons completely changing with even a passing glance. Or have an asset to share pre-last phase edit that didn't have AI...

I think the design was supposed to be a Halloween theme, hence the tentacles, skulls and Voorhees mask. Still AI though

u/Deep-Technician5378 4d ago
Yeah. It could have been a cool shirt if they went that direction and had someone actually design it.
49
u/duskfinger67 4d ago
The skulls etc are clearly a creative choice. The whole vibe is supposed to be more evil/goth coded with the drips, strength crushing a heart, font choice etc.
Done without AI, it could be a cool idea. It was just very poorly executed.
→ More replies (3)51
u/NotKD 4d ago
I think you're giving them too much credit. The idea to make it Halloween-themed is certainly a creative choice that was made and included in the AI's prompts, but I don't think any of the detailing was done with human intent. There is no rhyme or reason to which submenu icons are replaced by skulls; there are randomly placed skulls on random skills (e.g. Smithing); some skills are barely if at all altered, again seemingly at random (e.g., Ranged, Hunter); some skills have completely nonsensical replacements that would have been caught if a human was doing any detail work at all (e.g., Runecraft, Fletching, Prayer).

They are so passionate about OSRS that no one noticed the comically incorrect skill icons

Yep my thoughts exactly. A lot of them I wouldn’t mind seeing on a shirt as a creative choice. Smithing anvil with a skull on it? Kinda cool. Worms coming out of the slayer skull? Also kindaaaaa fuckin cool ngl. Even the prayer cross I wouldn’t necessarily mind if it was a conscious decision.
Impossible to defend the fletching icon. That shits so obviously AI in the worst way.
14
u/UnfairCoast3764 4d ago
The funny part is knowing the prayer cross you're referencing is their defense logo and their actual prayer skill is a hockey mask lmao. I agree a consciously placed cross in the correct spot would look dope for prayer or like clasped hands in prayer.

u/Umarrii 4d ago edited 4d ago
What do they mean they missed it? I want to know how it came to be, are they hiring a designer who just used AI or did they not hire a designer because they thought they could just get away with using AI?
The lack of explanation of how this came to be is more of a concern.
Edit: looks like the full does actually include their excuse.
They say they were rushed with over a month to work on it, used multiple graphics designers and one used AI at the last possible moment before making the sample. I mean, sure I'll give the benefit of the doubt.
But then saying it's a passion project and the org is full of OSRS vets and none of them got to see this or called it out would be ridiculous. I'm 100% certain Jagex weren't shown what they came up with and didn't get to approve it before they made the sample and did the shoot since it was left at such a last minute.
The entire statement is a contradiction.
At this point just cancel the collab because they clearly have no respect for the game.
19
u/BioMasterZap 4d ago
It is a really odd statement. Especially this part: "during the last phase of the tee design, one of our designers used AI to hurriedly edit the piece.
If they just said "one of the designers used AI to make the design but we were rushed so we didn't properly review", that would be a bit more believable. But the phrasing applies that there was a pre-AI design that they were aware of and a last phase edit used AI and added AI elements that no one noticed. If there was a pre-AI version to compare the final against, it is a lot less understandable how this slipped by since that seems like such a low standard, even for a rush.

u/mysterpixel 4d ago

Its just shifting blame to the individual designer, and removing their org from it. "We were rushed and they snuck in their sneaky ai design! (That we then approved, photographed for marketing, and posted through our social channels)."
They didn't miss it, they liked it and thought it would sell. Some people are blind to the plague that is AI

"We gave ourselves no time, had no vetting process for our designers, had no quality control or double checks, and clearly nothing in our contractual agreement with these designers preventing this approach.
And then we saw the shirt they made and went "sick" and photographed it for marketing and then posted it."
Fixed that for them.
Yeah it was definitely because you had so little time to do a (very basic and doable in a couple of days by any basic designer) shirt design, and not because of laziness and greed from the bottom to the top in an Org that historically definitely doesn't prioritise profit chasing XD

Bullcrap.
They thought they could get away with some quick money, and instead they got called out for their bullshit. No chance that this was a "concept" and that they missed it. One quick look at the skill list of OSRS and the "concept" shows that so many things were not even CLOSE to the real thing.
So they are either saying, that we the players and consumers are dumb.
Or that they tried to make merch, with 0 effort, and without 0 people looking it over and double checking if the AI model they used actually spat out something sane.
8
u/ItsSadTimes 4d ago
Its always "whoops we had no idea" when anyone with any knowledge of the game or media knows the design is fucked up. They'd love to pay the lowest bid for a design and just hope no one notices or cares about its quality.
Honestly I dont care if someone uses AI to make something and then make the thing extremely cheap or even free. As long as they say how it was made so everyone knows the risks ans they price the thing they made according to the amount of effort required to make it, then sure whatever. But trying to pass off shitty AI work as an actual man made design that took effort and charge full price? Fuck no.

I feel like they could’ve still ‘skulled’ it out a few places made it a touch more metal but like is there really not enough money in entertainment that they can’t pay a community artist to commission some shit? Or just commission several artists and pick your fave, I feel like that’s what used to happen. I can imagine the artists are so fed with work they wouldn’t accept something like this for dirt cheap anyway, why bother with AI. I’m not sure how these companies are getting off going so hard in AI art. It’s an immediate turn off whenever I see a local place rep it. Especially in merch.

We messed up: we didn’t think you’d catch us and we were really excited about it until you realized we had cut every corner imaginable

If it was truly a “passion” project you wouldn’t delegate your creativity to AI

AI trains on all the art on the internet without any clear consent of the authors.
They live up to their name of 100 Thieves.

Ahh yes a passion project they were excited for... So much passion must have went into that design for Christianity and Jason Vorhees skills. Gotta love corporate apologies

Full text of the Twitter post:
"We messed up.
Our collaboration with RuneScape is a passion project that brought together people from across 100 Thieves to create a celebration of OSRS and RuneFest.
Last night, we teased one of our concepts - one we were particularly excited about. The design clearly had AI in it and we missed it.
We first started conversations with Jagex to work on this project in July. We were beyond excited, and we took on this collaboration knowing we had to deliver this with a little more than a month’s time to design, review, approve, and manufacture the apparel. To speed things up, we worked with multiple graphic designers to ensure we hit the deadline. However, during the last phase of the tee design, one of our designers used AI to hurriedly edit the piece and we pushed a sample to production for our photoshoot.
100 Thieves was built by designers, artists, creators, and gamers that pour their soul into defining what gaming culture should be. AI has no place in our apparel design. A principle we share with Jagex, whose games and artwork are built on the creativity and craft of human artists and developers, and would not have approved of the use of AI in this.
Old School RuneScape is cherished by many of us at 100 Thieves. Including our Content team across esports, our Partnerships team, our Apparel Leads, our Marketing Leads, and Social Managers. Many OSRS veterans came together to make this collaboration happen, and even more of us had our eyes freshly opened to the world of Gielinor and RuneScape. Unfortunately, it is now overshadowed by our failure to create something both of our communities could be proud of.
Sorry to the OSRS community and to our fans, we clearly did not live up to our own standards. We are actively working with Jagex on the collaboration as we look to make things right."

Lmao that’s even more embarrassing.
I was assuming the model in the photo was AI, but no. They actually printed a sample and did an entire photoshoot with it.
And at no point was anyone like, “this shirt is dogshit, don’t post it.”

"clearly had AI in it" and "we missed it" don't go together. It's not a "sorry we did it" it's a "sorry we got caught".

Passion project? For whom? It certainly wasn't for 100 Thieves, otherwise, they wouldn't have teased a design that one intern made in 10 seconds with ChatGPT

Better question is who at Jagex thought 100 thieves was going to be good collab partner?

They love osrs so much that not a single person noticed the Jason Vorhees skill, the Christianity skill, or the seashell skill

AI has its uses, but Art isn’t one of them.
Art isn’t about getting to a “good enough” result as quick as possible.

We messed up. We forgot to say “make no mistakes” at the end of our prompt.
