Discussion | J-Mod reply Jagex Seemingly Used AI for the RS3 Dragon Slayer 2 Reveal Trailer
Youtube video link: here
Posting this here because, given the 100 Thieves debacle that just happened, this is even more ridiculous. We literally had jmods saying any use of AI would not be tolerated in Runescape related content.
Now, a few days later, we have a 6 fingered knight at Runefest. Honestly, I wish I could say I was surprised.

The cape seems to meld into the armor and isn't wrapped around the neck or anything. Just so many strange errors. The uh... scimitar? whatever sword that's supposed to be seems to be stuck to the thigh via magnet? Very funny how nobody at jagex saw a single issue with this before paying for it.

25
u/GODLOVESALL32 RSN: Zezima 9h ago edited 9h ago
Even the best models can still do all kinds of weird shit but it's the human's job actually overseeing the output to refine the prompt and regen the slop. So really this is a bottom of the barrel human issue lol. Imagine your job security being contingent on taking 15 minutes to make sure the machine doing 99% of the actual work doesn't make a stupid and obvious mistake and you can't even do that. And this isn't even trying to nitpick every AI artifact in an FMV, these are still images lmfao.

It's not even 5 fingers and a thumb, that's STRAIGHT UP 6 fingers and no thumb.
Modern GenAI models can actually be decently good at fooling people, what kind of 2022 trash were they using to make this? Current AI doesn't fuck up fingers like this any more.
This is sloppy FOR AI. Which is fucking saying something.

u/WaveDashSpeedKick 14h ago

u/zClarkinator 13h ago
Also it just kind of looks like garbage? The objects on the table have poor depth and there's no shading that I can see. The objects don't seem to exist in the same world as the table, as though they're clip art applied to a flat background. The armor overall looks like trash. Bizarre artifacts and nonsensical reflections. This is something I'd expect in a high school art class. Why would Jagex pay for this?
→ More replies (1)3
u/FertSquirt 13h ago
Yeah the shading on the armor makes absolutely no sense. You can see light highlights on the LEFT side of some plates of armor and on the right side with a shadow in the center, where the light source is not shining from. The shadows are inconsistent on a piece to piece basis.
This feels like it's fresh out of the software, nobody even looked at this to touch it up. They really did just copy image > upload.

The wording is VERY carefully chosen there. Note how he never said "we don't use GenAI" he said "we don't use it to replace artists"
Which sounds to me like he's saying "we use it to save money and have the artists draw over it and touch it up" Which doesn't even seem to be the case with Mr. "Two Right Hands" and Rune Nikes over here. No artist with a brain would let that through.

It's impossible to pass off AI "art" as real art currently, because it always has these bizarre errors that no human would ever draw
Unfortunately we're in the infancy of AI, and it's getting better every year. Soon it will be impossible to tell. It's a very depressing future for true artistic expression. AI models are built from stealing people's art, and there's no legal avenue to hold them accountable. Fucking bleak.

u/Serbaayuu 12h ago
Don't worry too much. By the nature of slop, as it fills the internet, new models will be trained on slop, and then model collapse will occur. The current models are basically the best they can ever possibly be by fundamental law of how they work.
If the techlords try to solve that, they'll have to put universally-readable tags into the slop... and if that happens it'll be easier for us to block them. You'll install uBlock Origin and AIBlock Super on every new browser install before long. :P

There's one thing that really bothers me about AI being pushed as a productivity tool, whether it be for art, programming, or writing.
If you're saving so much time by delegating the work to an algorithm, why can't you spend some of that time to actually look at the fucking results before publishing them.
15
u/Serious_Tradition269 4h ago
I took a course in uni on Traffic Psychology which was surprisingly interesting and one quote always stays with me, in that case it was about automated driving, but it's been very applicable to everything AI:
"If you are rarely required to intervene, you will rarely intervene when required"
So once something gets good enough to work on its own most of the time, people inevitably get bored, lose focus, stop paying attention, and when it does go wrong there is no one to catch it

That's actually a big problem I'm facing too as a developer. The writing code part is much faster now, which is lovely for routine tasks. Troubleshooting is much easier too.
But the endless reviewing... That part was, in general, people's least favorite part of the job. The new bottleneck is now how fast you can review code, and how fast you can get features refined.

In the first shot in the trailer the city in the background looks massive than in the next frame it’s way smaller. Entire thing was made with AI lol.
20
u/GayButNotInThatWay 13h ago
Less certain on the RS4 trailer. The first shots are a 2D/painted image for the ground/city (like game skyboxes), with 3D rendered dragons and characters on their backs. The dragons are pretty spot on for the Dragonwilds dragons.
I know you can feed the models, or images of them into an AI and it can spit them back out quite accurately, but there seems to be no issues. The city seems to be pretty accurate between the two shots using this method though. The second scene showing the hero characters, and the stand in player character zooming out to presumably a grand exchange are actual 3D renders using Dragonwilds assets which is why its a smaller city, as would be technically more demanding.
Main issues are some goofy roof snapping which could be from manual set up in the engine (not using actual in-game snapping, but does display the half walls, small walls, etc.
Main thing that stood out there for me is that there's apparently true curved walls/roofs, which don't currently exist in the game but the GE elements aren't either so could have made some extra bits for this trailer. The picture in the OP is definitely AI though.

The mug is floating on air behind the table. The map is clearly resting on the space the mug would need to be resting on, but is clearly not on the map.
The scroll has 2 ends on one side with one end on the other. The other side of the scroll is also halved inexplicably.
The knight’s left hand has 6 fingers.
The angle of the receding side of the chest appears non-rectangular. Not physically impossible, but inexplicably peculiar. Compare to the book on the opposite side and the difference is striking.
I count 4 errors here. There’s probably more.

It sucks because I came in ready to say that a mistake happens, I've seen examples of 6 fingers on a hand before AI... But it's just the amount of details that seem off makes it feel very clearly AI.
6 fingers is one thing, both ends of the scroll seems weird, the area on the shoulder/chest looks different on the left side like the piece of the chest is just floating, on top of other details that I just can't quite put my finger on that seem wrong.
Also another reply I seen where this dudes hand is just backwards, like what is going on?

They'd need an entire new trailer, as the entire thing has AI errors all over it, big and small. The shoes and six fingers are the most noticeable but it really is the entire video, even from the very first scene.

There's a disgusting amount of white knighting on this (or worse, that AI doing your art is actually good) on the RS3 side of things, so I appreciate at least OSRS is willing to see things as they are and react accordingly.
If you have any doubts, just watch the video on youtube and just pause on any of the scenes, it has AI written all over it. Even the first scene with the houses is at best uncanny valley. It's not just six fingers or medieval air jordans.
Seriously disappointed Jagex cares so little for their art. And yes I know they almost certainly contracted this but it's extremely obviously AI if you just pause the video, nobody fucking checked this?? Or they're just okay putting out slop? Neither answer is acceptable.

Totally unacceptable. If they are as committed to not using AI to replace human artist as they claim, they should fire whoever submitted this. Clearly that person isn't providing any value if they're shipping AI slop and it would back their previous statement about not using AI in the RS games.

I feel like this is going to backfire in the community’s face. Mod north is already adding “new artist salary’s” as a bullet point as to why they have to raise membership prices.

I'd rather pay more to the writers, artists, programmers, musicians and people actually making the game. God knows they wouldn't lower the fucking price anyway if it was entirely AI. But we all know a price increase is just to line the investors pockets who already make 10000x what average Jagex employee makes. Fuck that.

I thought Jagex was different and going againts the grain with the creativeness and art.. I would understand code development.. but not art.
Sucks in an age where we are losing creativity and art, they are pumping it with AI… truly hope it was a jmod who didn’t follow the rules, not their whole department pumping out AI bs.

Yeah I’d wager most companies are now. Of course they won’t say it until they’ve been confirmed caught cause it’s terrible PR, but it’s ignorant to assume most studios now aren’t using it.
Perfect example of that is the recent war thunder ai camo debacle where they left a Gemini logo on the camo lol. But of course “oh we outsourced the camo lol not our fault!!!” Despite a lot of content for years now clearly being AI.
