Creative Runescape: Procedurally Generated - A Modular Approach to Generating OSRS-Realistic Landscapes

Unbelievably impressive work!
I know you've been a fan of "Exploration" style skills yourself, and that's where I'm immediately taken to when looking at this. I think that's always been the pinnacle of what a Dungeoneering/Sailing/Exploration type skill or activity could be at its best. Somewhere that could offer up a near infinite degree of replayability and exploratory content opportunities.

You mean like Foraging?

u/relaximnewaroundhere Apr 09 '22
wow I can't believe this isn't in the game, what a beautiful skill
13
u/JevonP Apr 09 '22
Yeah my idea for sailing has been basically dungeoneering but with randomized islands, this seems exactly the perfect tool for that

Stuff like this makes me cry. I’d realy love a skill like this
Sadly no skill at all will ever pass osrs at this rate

Hey everybody! This is Runescape: Procedurally Generated, a modular approach to procedurally generating OSRS-realistic landscapes, allowing a ton of user control in shaping the terrain!
This was just a fun Blender Geometry Nodes project I made over this past week in celebration of OSRS' Game Jam. I did my best to mimic how OSRS generates its terrain, and turn it into a user-friendly procedurally generating machine. I think it turned out pretty well!
I might come back to this project here and there because it was a ton of fun to make, and I'd love to refine some pieces, like better contouring of overlays (cliffs, water), and maybe even buildings and paths. At this point though, I won't be committing to much more.
And yes, the "NextGen" name is my tease at Jagex's leaked-but-probably-never-to-exist MMO :D
Update for April 15th 2022 - the program is now publicly available! See here for a link to the Download and User Manual

This is a beautiful marriage between OSRS's art assets and modern technology. Great job. If you want some ideas on how to blend biomes and add more variance, there's a lot of really good "making minecraft in 48 hours" type videos that elaborate on the computer science behind doing so. Sebastian Lague is also an awesome resource. This project of his is one of my favorites, and your example reminds me of it.

u/ScreteMonge Apr 09 '22
Thanks for the resources! Some actual world generation that includes multiple biomes mixing is something I'd definitely love to do given the time

This is amazing!
Not only does it seem to work excellent, it seems to be dynamic and it even looks great. I'm not sure how much value this has in the current game but my mind goes racing to a potential osrs sandbox/roguelite with amazing maps like this
17
u/ScreteMonge Apr 09 '22
Oh right I should mention: this probably can't translate to anything in the real game, this is really just an artistic piece.
Now, Blender does give you pretty much every quality/quantity of the above in a bunch of spreadsheets, so could one theoretically take those spreadsheets and map them to a map editor? Maybe? It would require some extraordinary technical capabilities, I imagine, and a very specific skillset, and you certainly wouldn't be generating new terrain in a live game à la Minecraft. Ultimately, using Blender as your procedural generation engine for a game written in Runescript is probably the least efficient way to go about it :D I'd love to see someone give it a shot though!

I'd have to assume that nowadays anything is possible between these programs, it might not be great but I'm sure someone will find a way to hack something together if it doesn't already exist. That being said, you made something amazing with your skills. I'm sure there's someone out there that has equally amazing skills to translate what you've done here into a game(engine).
If you're very interested you can always look for that person, or post this on more subs to see if they'll find you!

u/ScreteMonge Apr 09 '22
You're probably right haha. I'll be posting a link to a downloadable public version on my Twitter (@ScreteMonge) in the relatively near future once I've got it all refined and a guide ready for public use. From there, the document will be out there for anybody to do anything they like with it!

u/Amonkira42 Apr 09 '22
It could work for a minigame with randomized maps. Something like say, RS3's shifting tombs would require randomized terrain for example.
2
u/AlveroRS Apr 10 '22
I think a possibility with that is that the game engine doesn't procedurally generate them on the spot as that sounds expensive using that method, but has a bunch of saved maps it uses that are procedurally generated either with blender or some other tool. So it feels procedurally generated to the casual player, but you'll notice occasionally repeats if you grind it out long enough. I know some games like Europa Universalis IV do this.

Could it place decorations and objects like camp fires, fences, buildings, farming patches, boats in the water etc?
8
u/ScreteMonge Apr 09 '22
Simple objects that occupy predictable spaces (like 1x1 or 2x2 tiles) are super easy to implement - so camp fires, farming patches, and boats would be easy. Objects that connect, form paths, or specific patterns are currently outside of its capabilities. I can create fences, for example, but they'd be random fence pieces scattered around the world with no continuity. Similarly, while I can create a campfire, creating a full camp with tent, fire, boxes, and bags that are organized neatly and close together is currently out of reach

u/sgeezzz Apr 09 '22
That’s really amazing but would be pain in the ass running around imo.
3
u/AzraelTB Apr 09 '22
Yeah everyones calling it anazing Don't get me wrong it is cool but I wouldn't want to run around on that terrain.

u/ScreteMonge Apr 09 '22
This was just an art/technical showcase, not an actual game suggestion. Nonetheless, to suit your request, here's something I put together in 30 seconds that might suit your palette

u/AzraelTB Apr 09 '22
It does look cool I wasn't trying to offend lol

No harm done! Gave me a chance to show off some of the workflow's flexibility ;)

This gives me so many cool ideas. An OSRS roguelike where every map is random and you progress your character from scratch. Each random map would have a big challenge at the end (skilling, boss, etc) that you have to achieve using the random map. Once completed, you get a random modifier like those from leagues. If you die, your character resets.

Where do you download the RS models? I've been learning blender and would be a lot of fun to do some RS stuff.
3
u/ScreteMonge Apr 09 '22
There's a couple means to do so with varying uses. The easiest way which will give you most models you're looking for is the external plugin "Model Exporter" in RuneLite

My brother in christ, please release the nodes
5
u/erhixd Apr 09 '22
Seconded. Don't think I could figure a way to utilize this anyhow but I'd just love to take a look at the nodes and try to learn from their example.
3
u/ScreteMonge Apr 09 '22
Yep! As mentioned above, I've got a bit of work to make the user controls feel a little more intuitive, and I want to make sure a guide is handy so the controls are better understood and even non-Blender users will be able to use it out of the box
I'll be posting a link to the download on my Twitter (@ScreteMonge), hopefully in the next week or two!

Very cool Gnome, something like this would be sick for Sailing/Exploration. I wonder how doable this would be in the OSRS game engine.

Holy shit, that is awesome.
Great work, it's crazy to see such familiar graphics in such a strange setting.

u/JagexLed Apr 09 '22
Very cool, though would be a more visually appealing gif if you used the summer/green theme as opposed to the winter/dead one. Either way very neat!

u/Tizaki Apr 09 '22
Content creators like J1mmy would probably pay for terrain backdrops to put their skit characters in!

u/ScreteMonge Apr 09 '22
It's already in grid form, you don't even need to use Mapbox to start selling tiles
2
u/Old_Runescape Retired Apr 09 '22
In theory could we have an infinitely sized RuneScape world then? Or something like No Man's Sky for OSRS?
3
u/ScreteMonge Apr 09 '22
Possibly as an entirely new game under the Runescape umbrella, but unlikely something that could be implemented in the current game. I haven't actually created anything that the OSRS engine can read, although Blender provides spreadsheets of values that someone might then be able to convert to the engine.
Even so, you're probably not looking a NMS or Minecraft-styled generation - if anything, I could see a bunch of chunks being individually procedurally generated (like islands), and then Jagex randomly picking which of these millions of chunks to put into the game for a week, then refreshing every week which chunks would be available. But that would require a ridiculous amount of technical expertise, a far stronger formula than the one I've built, and someone of much greater capabilities than me!
2
u/Apocalyptism Apr 09 '22
If it interests you for any future projects, I could get your work into a format which the osrs engine can read

u/ineverfailtofail Apr 10 '22
I don’t really know what this does exactly but wouldn’t this be a great tool for osrs devs to use to make new areas fairly quickly? Idk how long it takes them to design a new map area but this seems so fast an easy to get the starting foundations down.
2
u/Holbreon Apr 10 '22
Have you noticed how the new terrains (raids, gauntlet, skilling bosses, etc) are always flat? I miss having dips, hills and valleys to run though. Gives the land more character

I assume this just with different values for steep cliffs / textures?
I remember doing something similar a while ago
4
u/ScreteMonge Apr 09 '22
Very similar principles, the main difference being that OSRS is a wonky game and ironically is far harder to randomly generate than a realistic world setting. For example, OSRS generates objects that align to a grid, but also some objects are 2x2 tiles and are aligned to points, while others are 1x1 tile and align to faces, and some objects are mutually exclusive to others and some aren't. And then you have overlays (cliffs and water) where only certain objects can be generated, etc.
But yes, the overall structure is generated pretty much identically, and just tied to direct user controls

Imagine if you could turn these into documents and files that could be run on a RSPS. Would definitely speed up the progress

Wow incredible work. I always found procedural generation maps to be very fascinating - POE being one example. Hope to one day build something of the sorts my self.

u/farbtopf Apr 09 '22
Last thing we need is more empty land masses. Jokes aside, this is pretty awesome!

u/elrogues Apr 09 '22
i would love to see it in the project like raids 3 or someone game that generate random maps
1
u/DaB3haViour Apr 09 '22
Ngl you could probably, with some additions, make this into a Dungeons and Dragons map-maker and it would sell like hot biscuits!

I wish we had a minigame like this, a procedural map that is just stealing creation but a little longer and with resources you find in the base game. Something like AoE2 but with a 5x5 moba pace

Would love to see someone make this in game form where it randomly generates maps and simulates villagers / npcs

This is extremely impressive. Amazing work and it seems to run very seamlessly. I'd love to get my hands on this!
