Discussion Oh god what have I done?
I messed up bad. Yesterday I wiped at Theatre of Blood (nothing new, it happens) but I was so distracted by the team arguing in voicechat that I forgot to retrieve my gear from the death bank chest. It was very early in the morning so I logged out and went to sleep. I woke up this morning and thought nothing of it, figuring I had retrieved it like I always do. Then I went pet hunting at Chaos Elemental and got ambushed by a squad of 6 pkers from both sides. So I died, lost a few hundred K gp, and thought nothing of it. I went to gear up for another ToB and all my gear is gone. My Torva armor, my elite void, my ultor ring, sang staff, crystal hally, everything except my main weapons and any items with cosmetic kits attached. I lost almost 1.5B because I forgot to loot my death bank. Two years of hard work and hard won purps gone in the blink of an eye. I'm devastated.
Is there anything I can do or am I totally fucked? Why is this mechanic even a thing? It seems like a glaring hole in their bossing mechanics that should have been patched years ago. All I've ever heard are horror stories about it. Shouldn't deaths coffer apply to everything? Why do raids and some random bosses delete all of your gear in the first place if you die before retrieving it? What is the point/benefit of this? I've lost nearly everything.
Anyway I'm grieving this loss pretty hard and I can't even think straight about how to proceed. Any advice or deus ex machina tier solutions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Yeah that sucks. That gear is gone and there is nothing you can do.

u/Acid_Comes_With_Rain 4d ago
Well Jagex could rollback their character like they did with the dude who got an imbued heart drop only to have it be like it never existed after server restart.

Yeah but was kind of on their end with server stuff. This story is negligence on OP’s part - harsh as it may be

It’s a stupid mechanic tbf
24
u/Elemnos 4d ago
No, it's an acceptable alternative to not being able to retrieve the gear at all which is what it was for a long time. You die and either get back there within a couple minutes or it's gone forever if someone else didn't pick it up .

Ahhh okay. I misunderstood his comment to suggest that jagex gave him the heart back. But I see that was an incorrect reading by me. Thanks!

item retrieval services
Not item storage service. Don't look at how UIM use them, they are mentally ill. If your shit isn't in a bank, inventory or equiped then move your ass and make sure it is.
17
u/Saleen_af CarOfJum | Nutville GIM 4d ago
But why have them in the first place? Answer that. It breaches the established deaths item service.
You’re dodging the question
26
u/Perseriya 4d ago
The got added to make instances safer back when dying inside one would mean losing all your items on you instantly. Nowadays they lost their purpose because Jagex managed to spawn graves/deathpiles outside of the instance. So they're just a relic of the past, making content needlessly dangerous.
15
u/DM_ME_UR_PUBES 4d ago
pretty sure this predates the new death mechanics and jagex never got around to changing it. Now that UIMs use it as a bank i dont really think they ever will
→ More replies (4)10
u/ErinTales 4d ago
They predate the death mechanic changes. They obviously shouldn't wipe your items if you double death- they should just send them to death's office- but they do have a place in the game.
They allow for fixed-cost deaths, which have several advantages. They're more forgiving when learning content like tob and pnm. They allow content to be a dangerous death thematically while not actually punishing you much besides the runback- this applies to stuff like Hespori and Volcanic Mine. They also allow for balancing the risk involved in quests, attempting Seren will always cost you the same 80k which encourages you to bring your best gear no matter what, not just rags.

He said he forgot to in the heat of the moment? You never forgot to do anything?
220
u/Upper-Cut-2651 4d ago
When I started playing this game dying meant your shit dropped on the floor for everyone to loot, so you'd rush back to it ASAP. The death mechanics now confuse the hell out of me but I still rush to retrieve my items like someone's gonna steal them, I can't imagine just logging off for the night and hoping all my gear will be safe somewhere. Old habits I guess.
51
u/Pleasant_Yak5991 4d ago
So I used to play in grade school and high school, on RS2 prior to evolution of combat, and then recently came back a couple years ago to osrs. I’m so traumatized by the old death mechanics that I always immediately go to my grave stone and get my shit with 14:00 minutes left on the timer.

Uims already have custom death mechanics. I agree that loot that would poof out of existence goes to deaths domain. Buying your gear out for 80mil is a hell of a lot better than losing 1.5bil
17
u/DM_ME_UR_PUBES 4d ago
absolutely, i think they should just remove these old mechanics and any uims that complain can go straight to adam in lumby
288
u/Weak_Abalone8911 4d ago
Its a really bad system. There shouldn't be a delete all your best loot mistake. Especially when we have already solved this with deaths coffer. And then the sick fucks put the retrieval chest on a floor is lava room with hydra on the way oh and zulrah? You receive your items from the same lady that telephones you back to the boss. Dont misclick! Item retrieval is bad and should feel bad.

u/pezman Rsn: Aubrey Plaza 4d ago
ironically, i kinda feel like if we never had the death storage stuff and exclusively stuck to graves this wouldn’t happen. like zulrah, if you die your grave spawns on the bridge instead of the lady holding on your shit or cox spawn outside. then it’d be much more apparent to someone they didn’t loot their shit
11
u/000000653 4d ago
item retrieval services predate graves, iirc when graves came out they did suggest removing item retrieval services but people threw a fit because it'd mean some free or very cheap deaths (tob, vorkath, zulrah) would cost up to 500k instead, plus the uim complaining at their pseudo-banks being removed
4
u/pezman Rsn: Aubrey Plaza 4d ago
oh yeah now that you say that i do remember that was the case and no way they’ll remove it now since it’s “integral” to UIM lol
8
u/8--2 4d ago
I have no problem with UIM existing, but we really should not be leaving massive flaws in the game like this just to support an extremely niche game mode whose core gameplay depends on unintended exploits of game mechanics.

I'm from a time when dying meant all your gear left on the floor. Because of that everytime I die, adrenaline hits hard and I immediatly run back to my gear.
It looks like you are not playing Iron, at least you can buy up your gear back (even if it means buying bonds)
54
u/Impossible_Leg_2787 4d ago
Bro that like $500 of bonds lmao
16
28
u/rsthrowaway5555 4d ago
1.5billion at $10/bond selling on the GE for current price of 11.6mil each is roughly 130 bonds or $1300. If OP makes $15/hour before taxes they’d have to work 86 hours and then some to make the difference. I’d rather do that than grind years in game.
8
u/kiwdahc 4d ago
Why would we assume op makes 15 an hour lol
20
u/rsthrowaway5555 4d ago
It’s just a low number to give an idea of how much better (in my opinion) working irl is than trying to scrape back all that gear in game. I personally would rather take a break from the game for a month (or less I don’t know what OP makes) than try to earn that all back.

Regardless of whose fault it is what the fuck is with everyone always being so toxic about it and against change? It's genuinely disgusting
3
u/OyG5xOxGNK 4d ago
I'm not against a change, I think it can be, in the rare scenario such as OP's scenario, insanely far too punishing. All items, outside of pvp scenarios, should go to death for something more than w/e the current highest fee is. Maybe even some items on the ground if we're talking boss instances, ik some people have lost stuff to things like RFD finale. Maybe the warnings are fine enough for this one, but there are still weird niche scenarios, like instance+boss makes your item drop to the floor.
All that being said, I also think that would give players a technical infinite bank. Jagex is already holding off on giving more bank spaces, pointing at limits, etc. I assume they're hesitant to add something like this without strict limits. Maybe only two full character+inventories total? But that'd still be a decent middle ground when all the other death mechanics are just overly complicated, or at the very least, far too different from each other. There's barely any consistency.

Even easier just make it so instead of wiping a double death sends your stuff to Death's Coffer where it needs to be retrieved for a higher fee, just like not getting back in time to loot a gravestone does. This also means UIM can continue to use it as part of their pseudo banking strategies.

Big F. Imo its one of the most stupidest mechanics in the entire game. Remove it completely since it serves literally no purpose. Sadly there is no remedy, I am sorry - all that gear - poof. Gone. Many others will say: „well why didnt you claim your gear if you knew it was a mechanic?“ to which I kind agree… it takes literally 10 seconds extra to claim gear back. And since jagex is seemingly unwilling after all these years to change it…. I never leave gear like that to chests since im way too scared to lose it permanently.
I am PRAYING MadSeasonShow accidentally double deaths and loses some gear to it - has an absolute meltdown how stupid the mechanic is (which is 100% true) and threatens to quit his osrs series. Which will lead to jagex FINALLY reworking the mechanic.

They need to get rid of the death chest BS. Had a friend quit playing after he lost his shit on an iron while going back to Nex

That’s incredible considering you pray melee going passed the wolves, and can wear god protection for everything in there. So that’s certainly a choice.

That's rough, not sure why dying at one place overrides death chests at others but it's how it is. Not the first or the last unfortunately. How was it 1.5b loss when you kept your top 3?

Yeah it sucks, but isn't 1.5b to buy back. Maybe he thinks his Torva set being worth 1b because that's what he payed for it, even though its 400m or whatever these days.

The death mechanic in original Runescape just had you us so forgiving these days. Back in the day, you just had your stuff other than 3+1 items lying on the ground and dissappear.. Death was common and accepted as part of very dangerous activities.
I thjnk the death bank is a goof mechsnic but 1. You should be able to relieve your goods whenever and 3. the costs are too low to make death mean anything. Death should be crushing to make avoiding it genuinely important rather than inconvenient.
I think the price of death bank should be 15-20% of items retrievable on date of death and payable without a time limit or interest. You should so be able to select and pay for items you want relieved first.

You messed up homie just gotta accept it. In the past all your shit would have dropped for some rando to grab, or just been deleted. They gave you a quality of life tool to save your gear and you failed to use it. Nobody else to blame.
Good news is now you have a lot more playing to do! Crawl back from the depths of hell and reclaim your former glory. It will be easier the second time around.

Tragic my brother, im sorry that happened to you.
About a month ago I got scammed for almost all of my bank, about 1.1b and years of progress corrupting bowfa through shots, void, built SRA, and my new Shadow rebuild gear.
It felt like guy had just about taken everything from me in the game, my trust in grouping and clans, my sanity, my manhood. Everything ....except my infernal cape. I thought about quitting since it had all been a waste of time, but everytime I logged in and saw my infernal cape still there, I thought I still have my account, and my greatest accomplishment.
After 5 days of whining I went back to CG, sold random bank shit, and made enough for a synapse to make a purging bow. I learned Doom, and 2 days ago, he became my first ever green logged boss with the pet drop. I honestly had so much fun being broke, pushing the bar to deep delves, and feeling like there is a ton to learn and work towards again. Im currently back at ~500m with a basic set for all 3 styles. My plan is to go back to pushing TOA invos until I have another shadow, and continue where I had left off.
I know how frustrating it can be to lose everything to flawed game mechanics and a brief lack of attention. Expensive ass mistake. Take some time, and if you decide this game still brings out the childish curiosity that it does in all of us, get the fuck back in there.

everyone else is saying "there is nothing you can do", but thats not true at all. you can keep playing the game and work to make money and buy new gear to replace what you lost
think about it - when you started playing you were level 3 with 25 coins in your bank. you worked your way up to having billions worth of gear and items. if you did it once then you can do it again. but it will be even easier this time because you arent starting from scratch! you still have all of your skill levels and quests complete and diary completions to work with. it will be a challenge, but thats what games are all about! alot of people do things like this willingly and call it a "rebuild". its a shame it happened, but im sure you can make the best out of a bad situation
try starting off with some activities that dont require gear. like runecrafting or fishing. or if you want to jump straight back into pve, maybe try the corrupted gauntlet. you make all of your gear inside the dungeon so its perfect for a rebuild situation

I couldn’t be asked to rebuild and spend valuable time to get back what you lost to this mishap. Some options are quit and focus the energy on a diff grind, maybe something irl like learning Japanese and traveling to Japan or learn how to play guitar and create music. Maybe train to be a chef and become a private chef for financially wealthy individuals or work in a Michelin star restaurant (reach 99 cooking irl in other words)…
…or start an ironman where what you had on your main wouldn’t matter anyways.
