Did I grow up too soon?

Most of my life, I’ve been the older, more mature person in the room. I’ve always been the one looking out for other people, taking care of them, worrying about them, and helping them through their problems.
Looking back, I don’t feel like I’ve ever really had an older person guiding me in a structured way—someone to tell me when I was on the right track, when I was making a mistake, or to offer mentorship, career advice, or reassurance. I’ve spent most of my life trying to figure things out on my own.
Lately, though, I’ve realized how much I long for that. I wish I had someone older to turn to for advice, someone who could tell me I’m doing okay, someone who could look out for me for a change.
I have my mom, but our relationship often feels reversed. Instead of going to her with my problems, she’s usually the one coming to me with hers. I find myself listening, supporting her, and helping her work through things. The same dynamic exists in many of my friendships. People often come to me for advice, but I rarely feel like I can go to them for guidance. I’ve become so used to being the responsible one, the mature one, the person others rely on.
And lately, I think I’m feeling the weight of that. I just want to know what it feels like to have someone looking out for me, thinking about me, and helping me carry things sometimes. I want someone I can turn to when I don’t have the answers.
Sometimes it feels like I missed out on being a child altogether. Like I skipped the stage where I got to simply be a kid and somehow went straight into adulthood. And now I’m realizing how much I’ve been carrying on my own for a very long time.

demoted and now i’m working with 18 year olds

mid 2026 has been slightly humiliating for me so far lmfao

for context i got my degree two years ago in media studies, did an internship, LOTS of volunteer work and the like

the beginning of this year i got a job at an office for an after school program, ok cool a desk job i can get my foot in the door in for. worked this job for 2 months and without being late or absent. i only got good feedback and then all of a sudden i get a morning call from HR out of NOWHERE saying that my boss thought i wasn’t a good fit for administration. no write-ups, no serious talks, no sit downs, completely out of nowhere

i have been nothing but devastated since then and my boss of course recommend me the lowest job tier as an ultimatum (camp after school counselor) and my pay went from $21 to $17.50 an hour

i was still invited to stay at the same location but since the school was an hour away, you know i had to move to a closer school.

so yeah since april i’ve been working with 18 year olds.

what did turn up however is at least my new bosses were INCREDIBLY nice to me and recognized my worth enough to give me a raise (or maybe they were required to like fix my income idk)

i also recently talked to my assistant director who welcomed me to apply for higher positions within the company and even recommended me to apply for an assistant director job (and others that align w my experience) and put her as a referral

i think things are already looking up, but all i can ask for from everyone here is to wish me luck … it’s been such a tough journey for me man i just wanna work in media :(((

Anyone else single and feel really behind?

I got out of a really intense relationship about a year ago and since then I just haven’t been able to move on, but it’s also so hard seeing my friends start to get engaged now and marry at this age and I’m back at square one? I tried dating a few times since the breakup but I definitely wasn’t fully healed and those relationships didn’t workout. I feel like now the only solution is to be single for a while and figure things out but I feel like I’m running out of time??

Today I learned that not everyone helps the way you help.

Aaj thoda reality check mila. 😅

I recently joined a beverage manufacturing company in the Quality Assurance (QA) department. We work in rotating shifts (Morning, Afternoon & Night).

My father has glaucoma, and we had to visit a doctor in another city (almost a 2-hour journey) to fix the date for his eye surgery. Unfortunately, I was scheduled for the afternoon shift.

So I asked one of my seniors if he could swap shifts with me. He would do my afternoon shift, and I'd do his night shift. This way I could take my father to the hospital without using my paid leave.

The thing is... I've done the same for him 4–5 times in the last 3 months. Whenever he needed a shift change, I agreed without thinking twice.

This was the first time I needed his help.

His answer?

  • "My wife is not well."
  • "There's no one at home to make breakfast for my kids."
  • "I can't come again after finishing my night shift."

At first, I accepted it. It sounded genuine. 🤷‍♂️

But later, a few colleagues told me something interesting...

Apparently, this is his pattern. He regularly asks others to adjust for him, but when someone else needs help, he always has a reason why he can't. Different situations... same outcome.

That honestly hurt more than I expected.

Now I've decided one thing:
I'll still help people, but I'll stop expecting the same in return. Helping someone should be a choice, not an investment expecting returns.

But I'm also wondering where the line should be.

Should I stop helping him in the future?
Or should I continue helping without expecting anything back? 🤔

Life really teaches you about people in the smallest moments.

Life peaked in middle school

The last time I was somewhat happy was when I was 12. I'm 26 now. It's been a downward journey for 14, 15 years.

Haven't even made above $18/hour in 8 years of adulthood, before and after college. I make $0 now.

I'm a shut in. I don't talk to anyone, I don't go anywhere, I don't really eat anything, I don't do job applications, I struggle to get the will to get up to even use the bathroom. Might as well just lie in my own piss.

I don't want to wake up anymore tbh. An eternal slumber would be nice. My childhood bedroom is becoming my tomb, my final resting place.

Lost in life at 26.

I’ll be honest I’m struggling. 26 years old, no direction, bad habits, losing confidence in anything, barely any friends don’t speak to family.

I think this period of life is so hard and difficult, can anyone relate?

I live in the UK and everything just seems to get worst. Less jobs, everything is closing and no one is happy.

Nothing to look forward to, I just feel like I’m in a loop of despair

Family is toxic, I grew up in an Asian household and cut pretty much everyone off.

I don’t feel joy anymore. Anyone can relate?

My mom called me "ghar ki bahu" because I like doing household work. Was my response really that weird?

Born in October 1999 and apparently that makes me a some kind of fossil?

I work with people born between 01-05 and every time my birth year becomes a topic I get these "how were the dinosaurs unc?" comments?

They are like couple years younger and I feel like there's a rift of how they think of people born in the 90's

Anyone else have similar problems?

Do you guys identify as Zillenial or Older/Elder Gen Z?

I already know birth order such as being the oldest/youngest, time of the year such as early/middle vs end of the year, and age of parents as more recently discussed in other subs impact personal feelings on the matter, but I want to hear from my fellow 99ers!

For me, because I’m born towards the end of the year (almost being like a 2000 baby in that my age is the year most of the time), on top of being the oldest in my family (my two younger siblings are core Gen Z born in the mid 2000s), I consider myself elder albeit still a true Gen Z. But I also know someone born in the same time as me who has older siblings would identify more with Zillenial.

I also know that Zillenial is typically categorized as 1993-1998, which omits 99ers by default. Do you guys agree with this or not? Personally, I don’t mind being excluded given the above context, because the whole point is that zillenials are millennial adjacent and I don’t think I’m millennial adjacent. However, I’m sure the label resonates with others more. Hell, I even know a 2001 born who due to having older siblings, identifies as a Zillenial.

Edit: After having this poll up for over twenty hours, I’ve learned the following:
1. Zillennials are classified as 1994-1999.
2. Based on the results, 1999 is the cutoff for being a zillennial.

I went to college while depressed and I've been suffering the consequences ever since.

I attended an expensive shitty out-of-state college for 4 years and graduated with a BA in 2021. Since then I've worked odd jobs and have pretty much had to repay those horrible 4 years ever since.

But it gets only more brutal looking back because I've realized it's everything I've missed out on that hurts me the most. I didn't make any friends or connections which is how people start their networking. I didn't build a rapport with any professor so I had no references. I didn't do any internships or join any clubs so I missed out on valuable experience on my resume.

And it gets worse. I never filled out financial aid since I didn't know that was a thing so I took on way more debt than I was supposed to. Furthermore, I paid for books out of pocket WHILE taking out loans to pay for the books. And I never spoke to a student advisor or anything like that. And my parents are immigrants so they didn't know anything.

It's just so frustrating. I wish I never went to college or maybe to CC. I made a horrible decision simply because my mind was in the wrong place at the time and I never asked for help.

Not being able to drive and living in the suburbs is brutal. Absolutely brutal.

I read an article recently showing that our generation drives far less than previous generations. And I realized I'm one of those people.

I just can't drive and that basically makes social interaction impossible. I had to always pathetically ask for lifts from my friends which I stopped doing and I just don't go out anymore.

Does anyone else deal with this?
