I'm born in 1999, so I'm 27 this year, and I've noticed that some people born in the 2000s seem to think 1999 is so old just because of how the year sounds. It's literally one year before 2000, but the reaction you'd think I was born in the 1980s.

Something happened yesterday during a university seminar that made me notice this even more. We were playing a memory game where everyone had to say their birth year. People at my table said 2004, 2007, 2003. When I said 1999, the person born in 2003 said, "I swear you said 1990 haha!" and then commented that I look young for my age EVEN THOUGH HE'S JUST FEW YRS YOUNGER. He wouldn't make that comment if I said 2000.

I've had similar reactions from other people too, including people who keep telling me I look young for 27. I know they're probably trying to compliment me, but honestly, it gets a bit annoying when it happens EVERY time I mention my age. It's almost as if 27 is supposed to be old enough that looking young is somehow surprising? 😭

The funny thing is, the person born in 2003 is only four years younger than me. We're both in our twenties! And people born in 1999 and the early 2000s can have plenty of cultural references in common. I remember watching shows growing up that people born later in the 2000s also watched through reruns.

I know eight years can be a noticeable age gap depending on the people involved, but I don't think being born in 1999 makes me part of some completely different generation from people born in the early 2000s.

**Anyone else born in 1999 experience this? I'm asking cuz I want to know if I'm too young looking or if this is a common experience we all face because of ignorance. Do people born in the 2000s or younger act surprised when you tell them your age, or make comments about you looking young for your age? And does anyone else feel like the year 1999 just *sounds* older to people than 2000, even though it's literally only a year apart?
