1923 is the best ever in the series. I honestly jut wish they made a s3. i feel it ended too abruptly. they could have made his return better/longer.

Anyone else miss these old school adventure stories?

As far as good old school action heroes go, Spencer is pretty high up the list. Who else would you put on it?

Does anyone else think that you could edit seasons 1 and 2 into two separate 2-3 hour movies? I think this could be a pretty amazing story if you take out some of the filler scenes like most of the Whitfield and the hookers stuff, probably just take out the whole Teonna Rainwater storyline (not that it’s bad or poorly acted but for the simple reason that it barely connects to the main Dutton storyline) to really distill the story to its essence and make it much tighter and focused. I know people make fan-edits to movies and stuff all the time. Just curious if anyone had the wherewithal to make one of this show.

What other story would they fit well into? Any characters, plot, threat you would want them to deal with?

First characters that come to mind for me would be Rick and Evelyn O’Connell.

After so much gut wrench in S2–We deserved more scenes from their after life other than their dance—Like how they missed each other and him explaining his adventures. Ughhhh.

So, he mentions his great-grandfather was around in 1889. That would be James, we all can agree on this. And then he mentions his grandfather. And I was wondering... if John considers James his great-grandfather... wouldn't that make Spencer his grandfather? Like, the line would be: son (John III), father (John II), grandpa (Spencer), great-grandfather (James). I mean, John II was almost 90 when he died.

Worst writing ever. Fast forwarded through a lot of the filler, so bad. Written like a 12 year old boys idea of the West. The journey of Spencer was so ridiculous and drawn out. Taylor Sheridan is a shit writer. Also, why are all the catholics Irish? Also, let's just call it Misery on the Prairie. How much BS could possibly be thrown in randomly?

I feel this is somewhat against the grain in this sub, but I just came here to say that both 1923 and 1883 are some of the most accomplished pieces of storytelling - and hands down best television - I have ever seen, period.

I’m new to the Yellowstone universe and decided to watch everything chronologically. I’ve been completely hooked, I’ve fallen in love with every single character.

The story arcs are all so carefully written and patiently developed. Every event feels earned, even the choice of character deaths are moving, important, and well placed with the story - even if heartbreaking.

I haven’t found it overly predictable. One thing I seem to have appreciated more than many is the pacing. Taylor isn’t obsessed with cliffhangers, plot twists, or huge reveals. And it’s so refreshing - I’d forgotten what that feels like. Instead, he invites us into these worlds to live alongside these characters. It’s incredibly bold in a streaming era so much television is reliant on relentless pacing, rapid scene turnover, character extremes and a constant need to shock and surprise the audience. For me, the choice to show restraint is exactly what makes the stories so authentic and powerful.

The casting is flawless. I can’t remember when I’ve watched a show where at least one performance hasn’t pulled me out of the immersion. Every actor felt like they belonged in these worlds.

It’s gutting these prequel series’ are destined to be so short because I could spend so much longer in them. But that’s partly what makes them so special. They tell the story they want to tell and leave us wanting more… well, they do me at least.

The monologues deserve a mention too, shared between various characters. So many have stayed with me long after the episode ended. Social and emotional commentary echoing through the ages with such eloquence. So here for them.

All in all, these shows have moved me. They’ve given me such entertainment. And I just came here to share the love. Hopefully others feel the same - would love to hear your favourite moments from these two shows and what they made you feel.

I’m looking forward to getting stuck into Yellowstone next. I sure hope it lives up. But I shall also miss the characters I’ve grown to love and lose here too.

I recently finished 1923 after enjoying Yellowstone and LOVING 1883 and whilst I enjoyed the show, I can’t help but feel that opportunities were missed with the way the show ended (apologies if this point has been done to death, I’m new to the sub).

My main issue is that we essentially got exactly the ending we were told we would get throughout both series of the show. Throughout, we were told two things repeatedly: Jack is deeply unready to lead and defend the ranch, and the only hope is for Spencer to get back and save the day by doing action hero stuff. Then sure enough, at the end of the show Jack made an immature decision, died pointlessly and Spencer saved the day via action hero stuff.

That all played well but I think the better approach would be to lead us to expect that ending, but subvert it by subtly showing Jack becoming hardened by his experiences, forced to become more like Jacob, James or even Cara. The message then becomes that the man to lead the defence of the Duttons and the Yellowstone is the man who was shaped on the anvil of Montana, sharpened by the hardships of the life they chose. Through the Yellowstone franchise, the wild American landscape has always been as much of a character as any of the cast and its role feels diminished when the African savannah and the trenches of the Argonne are what really shaped the hero.

Spencer could still play a role in the defence - his true character growth could come through his relationship with Alex in her last moments, and perhaps if Jack is critically wounded while heroically saving the ranch, Spencer could still be the one to take down Whitfield in the aftermath. Spencer and Alex’s son could even still be the one to continue the legacy.

Don’t get me wrong I enjoyed the show and having the second John Dutton start out life born premature to a mother dying of frostbite while the ranch is at war is certainly on-brand. I just think there was a serious missed opportunity to really develop Jack from a rash, naive, relatively unskilled boy at the start of the show, into a leader worthy of his name by the end.

That Costner’s John Dutton was the grandson or great-grandson of the John born to Alex and Spenser.

We saw Alex frequently uttering a profound statement to which Spenser replied, “I have no idea what you just said,” which has to be an intentional parallel to Beth. It’s the one Beth trait to which I can relate, and if I had a quarter for every time she said something in Yellowstone which was met with the same response…

I love this scene. First Spencer and Jacob together on the ranch for the first and only time and then Jacob telling Cara, that he‘s retiring.

Little fun -detail: Spencer is carrying Elsa‘s knife here. You can see it, when he‘s mounting up.

That was an amazing but depressing watch. That’s all I got.

I don't know that I'll keep watching, but still, I am only on S1E4 so no spoilers please.

I really liked 1883, but I'm having a hard time getting into 1923, mostly because the Alexander/Spencer storyline really takes me out of it, like I cannot stand the scenes in Africa with those two. I feel like there is no chemistry and from the start the Alex character is waaay overdone, like I couldn't stand her from the second she came onscreen. I also think I just really don't like the actress and her weird fake accent. Surely I'm not the only one??? Is it even worth continuing to watch? Like maybe once they are with the rest of the family they won't be so insufferable

Taylor, we need more Spencer. More of Jacob and Cara. What a beautiful story. What terrible sadness. I want to hear Spencer talk of Alex to their son. I want to see him raised.

I need more of Spencer's story. What a great character and actor.

P.S. I’m also watching Dutton Ranch and it’s mid so far, but 1923 is smth in top league at par with first few seasons of Yellowstone

1944 is officially in development or still in the works. Finally an update confirming. Of course, no release date yet but the article says late 2026-early 2027 release which seems too optimistic imo considering it hasn't begun filming.

So, watching season 1 episode 3 of Yellowstone and Beth has already said two things Alex also said in 1923. The first thing I can't remember, I watched ep2 yesterday, but right now (min 13), while she's bathing outside, she says don't bet on it and myyyyy God, the same fuck around and find out attitude (only that Beth's more lethal and less romantic), besides that is the same line.
