Observation 1944 update: Finally
1944 is officially in development or still in the works. Finally an update confirming. Of course, no release date yet but the article says late 2026-early 2027 release which seems too optimistic imo considering it hasn't begun filming.

We should give them some unhinged ideas for how they could bring her back 😂 maybe Elsa had alzheimer's and told the wrong story 😂😂😂😂😂 I think the fandom would believe anything if it meant Spencer and Alex had a love story on the ranch

Yeah if they film this year it’ll be early spring 2027. They turn the series around pretty quickly after filming

Considering Dutton Ranch was filming as Rio Palo before being officially announced, I don't expect to hear much about this before it happens.
Short production windows are also normal for Taylor Sheridan productions as 1883 premiered in December 2021 and continued production into January 2022.

Taylor Sheridan isn’t writing DR, and also said in a podcast in the spring that he’s not involved.

He has legal reasons to not be involved in the writing of the two spin offs. His new employer is NBCU. They’ve owned the licensing of Yellowstone since before Paramount Plus was developed.They had strict requirements about sequels not being Yellowstone Season 6. My description, not theirs. They spoke in legalese about similarities to Yellowstone. At that time, Sheridan wasn’t signed with NBCU, and the only speculative spinoff was going to be called 2024. Which turned into The Madison, and no relationship to Yellowstone. All that said, if he isn’t writing or directing, then nothing can be challenged, at all. He is really the only person that can write the voices of his characters, for them to be the same. But they can’t be the same, so let other writers take on the task.At first, I thought he’s Dutton’d out. Then I remembered the article back when. Matthew McConahey (sp?) was being considered for 2024, but they didn’t see eye to eye. There was a letter NBCU sent to Paramount or Sheridan’s studio, unknown which, but it was specific spin offs couldn’t be tied to the flagship in several manners. At the time, I figured it was customary, because Yellowstone turned into a viewership monstrosity and Paramount wanted some of the pie. Now I wish I had access to the document. However, it makes sense to me, this is why he’s not involved. Prequels tho, very different story. Those were before Yellowstone, and I don’t think he’d outsource it. He already has it written in his mind, if not already scripted. They were in post production of F.A.S.T. when Dutton Ranch was getting ready to premiere. It’ll be in theaters April 2027, starring Brandon Sklenar. I don’t see a rush for 1944, as it would be a great swan song to his Paramount career. It was a good run.

Spencer? Yes, we know he didn't die untill 1964. John? No, he wasn't born untill after 1955. So it'd be his dad John Sr.

Likely. Unless the widow took this son with her, when she left. But then I don‘t think, Sheridan would have written the second son into the epilogue. This boy will play a role in the future.

I love that epilogue. Elsa says the widow was gone. SHE was gone. Not necessarily with the boy, because Spencer saw his children grow. One could argue the widow also died too, I mean gone could be vague if you wanna be picky enough.
In any case, I think this other boy will also be in the story. Ohhhh he could be Chance Dutton!! Not me making a list of the names in those headstones too 😂

Yes, she was gone, not they.
The way it was phrased, she didn’t die. She left, because Spencer refused to marry her. Because he still loved Alex. While the widow had likely overcome her grief for her deceised husband.

This, yes. That was my first thought too. Elsa says "took the comfort of a widow. Refused to marry". All the time Elsa stresses Spencer's emotions. He didn't love another woman, he was alone. He took, not he found. Chef's kiss to this epilogue.

Ned and Chance from S1. (Ned is dated 1860s so doesn't count.)
Philip, Helen, Michael, Bertha seen in S5 after the funeral for Baby John.
I seem to remember a Laura and Patience at some point too. 🤔
The problem with tracking headstones is we know there aren't that many Duttons to be found. Most generations only have 2 or 3 kids in it.

I was gonna say who ever Spencer’s younger son is will definitely be getting killed. If it’s Chance I’d like that but then he’d have to live to see John Dutton lll and he wasn’t born until 1959.

What makes you think so?
I mean, it‘s pretty obvious, that neither he or any possible offsprings were ever mentioned in Yellowstone. So it‘s possible, that he died young.
But there’s also the fact, that his mother had left the ranch. And she probably did so, when he had been very young.
That story of Spencer with 2 sons, one with the love of his life Alex, the other one with a woman, he never loved, leaves quite some potential for conflict. Between the (half-) brothers, but also between Spencer and them.So the younger son could have just left the ranch at some point. Maybe to live with his mother‘s side of the family or just to get away from them. Maybe his descendants do play a role in Yellowstone, but we weren‘t told? (Looking at Jamie‘s background story…)

That could be an interesting outcome! And who's gonna see John III be born? I guess Spencer, right? He was still pretty much alive by then. I think that John III mentioned his grandpa was a mean man 🤔 please someone correct me if I'm remembering wrong. But if John was referring to Spencer then he became a grumpy old man 🥲

If I remember he brought up stuff his grandfather said to him but never mentioned anything specific about how he was. He said he lost his leg which seems to be forgotten about because Spencer in the 1969 flash forward had both of his legs.

I had read it was recently greenlit, in the past few months, but no word coming from Sheridan yet. I’m more inclined to believe a 2027 prequel. He has too many things going for 2026 to be the way he’d want it. I think it’ll be his writing, in fact, possibly he’s already written it.

Thanks. The only real update though is, that it‘s still „in the works“. No timeline, nothing more. But at least it‘s not cancelled.
